The best MNS coaching in India is the one that prepares you for the test your route actually uses. Military Nursing Service has two routes for women: after Class 12, a NEET (UG) score leads into the four-year B.Sc Nursing course; after a nursing degree, a computer-based test run by the National Testing Agency leads to an interview and a medical. The two need different preparation, so check which one a batch teaches.
What are the two routes into the Military Nursing Service?
| Route A: B.Sc Nursing after Class 12 | Route B: Short Service Commission for nurses | |
|---|---|---|
| Who | Women who have passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. | Women Indian citizens with a nursing qualification. The 2023-24 NTA test was open to those aged 21 to 35 years. |
| Test | NEET (UG). NTA’s notice of 9 February 2024 says the score is used for shortlisting to the four-year B.Sc Nursing course at Armed Forces Medical Service hospitals. | A computer-based test conducted by NTA for the Directorate General of Armed Forces Medical Services. |
| After the test | Interview and medical examination by military medical officers, then merit listing, according to the AFMC nursing admission page. | Interview at Base Hospital, Delhi Cantonment, then a medical for those who qualify in the interview. |
| Commission | Students are granted permanent and short service commission in a 60:40 ratio on merit, and short service candidates sign a bond to serve at least five years, as AFMC states. | Short Service Commission in the Military Nursing Service. |
The dates, ages and seat numbers change every year. The figures above come from the most recent official documents we could read, which are the 2023-24 and 2024 notices. Always read the notice for your own year.
How does Route A, the NEET route, work?
AFMC’s nursing admission page says that only female candidates who have passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, with at least 50% aggregate and in the first attempt, are eligible. It also says that selection is on all-India merit and that candidates must be declared medically fit by a medical board of military medical officers. The same page asks readers to refer to the prospectus of the admission year for exact details, so treat it as the outline and the year’s notice as the rule.
The NEET (UG) 2024 notice described a paper of 200 multiple-choice questions from Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology), lasting 200 minutes. If you are on this route, your preparation is NEET preparation first. A batch that talks about MNS but spends little time on Class 11 and 12 Biology, Chemistry and Physics is not preparing you for the stage that decides your shortlist.
How does Route B, the test for nursing graduates, work?
In December 2023 NTA announced “Military Nursing Service: Selection for Short Service Commission (SSC) 2023-24”, a national-level entrance test held on 14 January 2024 for female Indian candidates between 21 and 35 years of age. The notice describes a computer-based test of 2½ hours with multiple-choice questions on nursing, English language and general intelligence. It was in English only and had no negative marking.
Shortlisted candidates were called for an interview at Base Hospital, Delhi Cantonment. The instructions list the documents to carry, which include the degree and mark lists, a valid State Nursing Council registration, the NTA score card and proof of Indian nationality. Only candidates who scored 50% or more in the interview, that is 10 marks or more, went on to the medical examination.
Preparation for this route is nursing knowledge, English and reasoning, together with interview readiness. It is a different exercise from NEET, which is why a centre that sells one MNS package for both routes should be asked which test its classes follow.
What should you prepare for at each stage?
| Stage | What to prepare | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| NEET (UG), Route A | Class 11 and 12 Physics, Chemistry and Biology, practised in full-length papers of 200 questions and 200 minutes. | NTA’s NEET (UG) 2024 notice. |
| Interview, both routes | Clear spoken English, your reasons for choosing military nursing, and your own academic record. For graduates, the documents listed in the interview instructions, including the nursing council registration, must be ready. | AFMC page and NTA instructions of March 2024. |
| Computer-based test, Route B | Nursing subjects, English language and general intelligence, in a 2½ hour paper with no negative marking. | NTA public notice, December 2023. |
| Medical examination, both routes | Check your eyesight, weight and general health early. The AFMC page says a medical board of military medical officers decides fitness. | AFMC page; NTA instructions. |
None of these stages can be passed by memorising a list of answers. A batch that is honest will show you where your weak chapters are within the first few weeks and tell you if the plan needs more time than you have.
How should you choose MNS coaching?
- Ask which route the batch is built for, and which test its mock papers copy.
- Ask how Class 12 Biology, Chemistry and Physics are taught if the batch is for Route A, and how nursing subjects, English and reasoning are covered if it is for Route B.
- Ask how interview practice is handled, because both routes include an interview.
- Ask for the current year’s notice to be shown to you, with its dates and age limits, instead of a summary.
- Be careful with anyone who talks about a certain place. Selection is made through NEET or the NTA test and then through the Army’s own stages.

Why do families look at Dehradun for MNS preparation?
Dehradun is home to the Indian Military Academy, and many families from other states prefer a town with an established student community. GS India Defence Academy teaches in classrooms in Dehradun and has a separate girls’ hostel with a mess, which is relevant here because the Military Nursing Service routes described above are for women. We do not run online classes. Fees are on the fee structure page and the hostel is described on the hostel and mess page.
