NDA Coaching for Jammu & Kashmir Students: Routes, Centres & Hostel

Jammu is about 507 km from GS India Defence Academy in Dehradun, and the trip is a long day or a night: there is no direct train, so families take a train to Haridwar and cover the last 60 km or so by road, or drive the full distance in roughly seven hours on a free-flowing road. UPSC holds the NDA and CDS papers at four centres across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, and the Sainik School Society’s school for the region, Sainik School Nagrota, stands 11 km from Jammu. This page puts the journey, the centres and the school-entry routes in one place.

What is the practical way to reach Dehradun from Jammu?

In our timetable data no train runs from Jammu Tawi to Dehradun. Two trains reach Haridwar, which is about 60 km from the academy by road. Both times were read from erail.in on 12 October 2026, so confirm them on IRCTC or NTES before booking.

UTC, the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation, publishes no class or timings in its route list, so check utconline.uk.gov.in. Our Jammu page has the city-level detail. We have not researched routes from Srinagar, Leh or Kargil, so this page gives no times for them. Which Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh towns host the NDA and CDS papers?

UPSC’s NDA and Naval Academy Examination (II), 2026 notice lists four centres in the region, and the CDS (II) 2026 notice lists the same four. Two are in Jammu and Kashmir and two in Ladakh.

CentreRegionIn NDA (II) 2026In CDS (II) 2026

KargilLadakhYesYes

Do not confuse Srinagar in Kashmir with Srinagar (Uttarakhand), which the notice lists separately as another centre. UPSC allots centres first-apply-first-allot up to a ceiling and will not change a centre on request, so apply early if you want Srinagar, Leh or Kargil, which are far from each other.

What is Sainik School Nagrota and who can apply?

Sainik School Nagrota is the Jammu and Kashmir school on the Sainik Schools Society’s list of 33 existing schools. Its own website describes it as a residential public school in Jammu and Kashmir, inaugurated on 22 August 1970. By straight line it is about 11 km from Jammu, and it is also the nearest Sainik School to Pathankot in Punjab, about 92 km away. Entry to Class VI or Class IX is through the All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination, conducted by NTA. Our Sainik School coaching page and the AISSEE admission guide explain the entrance. The Society also describes a scheme for new Sainik Schools in partnership mode; check its New Schools page for schools that are operating and admitting.

Where does RIMC fit for a Jammu and Kashmir child?

RIMC admits to Class VIII, and its admission page says that generally one vacancy per State is allotted, that some States with larger population have up to two, and that seats may vary every year. It gives no figure for Jammu and Kashmir. From the December 2026 examination, for the July 2027 term, the application is online through NTA, the test is held at NTA centres and the age window is 12½ to 14 years. RIMC states that forms will not be issued by RIMC or by State Government authorities. The college is in Dehradun, as is our academy. Read the RIMC admission guide or our RIMC coaching page.

Which army formation is based near Jammu?

XVI Corps, known as White Knight Corps, is headquartered at Nagrota, near Jammu. Families in the region often have a serving relative or neighbour, and it is a useful reference for a child; it is not a link with the academy. Boys and girls at the academy live in separate hostels with a mess; see hostel and mess.

Which pages cover the region?

The Jammu page is live. Pathankot, 92 km from Nagrota, shares the Haridwar trains above and appears on our Punjab page. The town list that appears with this page adds further Jammu and Kashmir pages as they are published.
