Dehradun vs Prayagraj for NDA Coaching: Which City Suits Your Child?

A fair comparison of NDA coaching in Dehradun and Prayagraj, with distance, rail, exam centres and selection boards.

If you want your child to stay at home, Prayagraj is a sound base: it is a UPSC examination centre and has an Army Selection Centre. If you want residential coaching in the city that hosts the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun is the option, but it is a long way from Prayagraj, about 757 km by road and roughly 16 hours on the one direct train. The sections below set out the facts so that you can weigh distance against routine for your own child.

Neither column makes one city better in general. A student’s results depend on preparation, health and temperament far more than on a postcode.

How far is Prayagraj from Dehradun?

By road the distance is about 757 km, which a free-flowing drive covers in roughly 9 hours; real journeys take longer. That figure is an estimate from OpenStreetMap routing, the same method used for the other distances on this site. By rail, the timetable data (erail.in, checked in October 2026) shows one direct overnight service, train 14113, running daily and taking about 15 hours 50 minutes. The Uttarakhand Transport Corporation also lists a Dehradun ISBT to Prayagraj route via Lucknow. Check IRCTC or NTES and the corporation’s timetable before you book anything.

Within Dehradun, the railway station is about 10 km from the academy, the ISBT about 8 km and Jolly Grant airport about 33 km.

Does living near an SSB centre help?

It is a common worry, so here is the plain position. After the written result, candidates register on the recruiting website and are allotted a Selection Centre. The city where you studied does not decide it. The Army lists four Selection Centres, at Allahabad, Bhopal, Bangalore and Kapurthala, and the Air Force lists five boards, one of which is at Dehradun. Candidates travel to whichever centre they are allotted. So Prayagraj having a Selection Centre is a fact about the city, not a reason to stay there for coaching, and Dehradun having an Air Force board is not a reason to come here.

What Prayagraj offers a family

It is home. Your child sleeps in a familiar room, eats familiar food and has parents close by for the whole year, which counts for a great deal at sixteen or seventeen. There is no relocation cost and no long journey if something goes wrong. Prayagraj is an NDA centre, so the paper can be written in the same city, and the Army’s Selection Centre East is there too. The city also has coaching options of its own. We have not assessed them and we name none, so judge each one with the same checks: verifiable results, named teachers, published fees, batch size, schedule and a test calendar.

What Dehradun adds

Dehradun adds a residential routine and a defence setting. The Indian Military Academy and the Rashtriya Indian Military College are in the city, and the Air Force Selection Board at Clement Town draws officer candidates here. GS India Defence Academy coaches in the classroom only, with SSB-focused preparation, and provides separate boys’ and girls’ hostels with a mess for students who live away from home. For free counselling, call or WhatsApp +91 70170 31757 and ask for a hostel visit, which is the best way to judge whether a student far from home will settle.

Who should choose which

  • Stay in Prayagraj if your child is settled at home, studies well with a local academy and the family prefers to keep the year close to home.
  • Consider Dehradun if your child needs a fixed residential routine, if the family wants a girls’ hostel separate from the boys’ hostel, or if you want classes and SSB-focused preparation under one roof.
  • Think carefully about Dehradun if your child has never lived away from home. The journey of about 16 hours means visits will be rare, so ask the academy about leave and visiting rules in writing.

The dates that matter for a student in Prayagraj

Whichever city you choose, the calendar is set by UPSC. Its programme of examinations for 2027, issued on 20 May 2026, lists the NDA and NA Examination (I), 2027 notification for 2 December 2026, 22 December 2026 as the last date to apply and 11 April 2027 as the date of the examination. The second cycle of 2027 is listed for 19 September 2027. UPSC says dates can change, so confirm them on the exam calendar and on upsc.gov.in.

The practical point is that a student who decides on Dehradun should move early enough to settle in before the April paper, and should choose the examination centre on the day applications open. Prayagraj and Dehradun are both on the centre list, and UPSC will not change a centre later on request.

Comparing academies in either city

Whichever city you pick, the academy matters more than the postcode. Ask every academy for verifiable results with names that can be matched to an official list, an introduction to the teachers for your child’s batch, the fee break-up in writing, the current batch size, the weekly timetable and the test calendar. Our guide to choosing a defence academy in India turns those into a ten-point table you can carry to a visit.

Making a long move work

If you are leaning towards Dehradun, treat the move as a family project. Travel together for the first journey, see the hostel and the classrooms, meet the person in charge and fix how often your child will speak to you. Our hostel checklist for parents lists what to ask. Families from Uttar Pradesh may also find our pages for Lucknow students and Dehradun versus Lucknow useful, since the bus route between Prayagraj and Dehradun runs via Lucknow.
