Hostel and Mess for Boys and Girls

For most families, the hostel decides the admission. A student who has travelled from another city is not only choosing a teacher; they are choosing where they will sleep, eat and study for months. This page explains how GS India Defence Academy approaches that decision, what we can tell you today, and what we think every parent should see and ask before paying a rupee to any academy.

Boys and girls live in separate hostels, and a mess is run for residents. The hostel is open to students of every course, and the monthly hostel and mess charge is listed openly on the Fee Structure page.

Why the hostel matters as much as the classroom

Defence preparation is a routine before it is a syllabus. The NDA written exam asks for Mathematics and General Ability; the SSB interview, which follows, asks for something harder to teach: steady habits, confidence, teamwork and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Those qualities grow from a stable daily rhythm.

A hostel gives a student that rhythm with far less time lost in travel. There is no long commute before an early class, no skipped meals between lessons and no distracted study hour at home. Regular wake-up, study and sleep times also teach time management, which officer selection boards look for, long before a student reaches an interview.

For outstation students, the hostel is simply what makes Dehradun possible. It lets a family in another state send their child to a coaching programme in an education city, with a steady routine.

What you can rely on today

We would rather state a few things plainly than list many that cannot be checked. Here is the short list.

  • Boys and girls live in separate hostels.
  • A mess is run for residents.
  • Study, physical training and SSB practice form the core of the programme; ask for the current timetable of your batch at counselling.
  • The hostel and mess charge is ₹7,500 to ₹9,000 per month, registration is ₹1,000 once, and the hostel security is ₹2,000 and refundable.
  • Parents can visit before admission and see the hostel and mess.

Details such as room-sharing, the staff on duty, visiting rules and the menu are shared in person and in writing at counselling, because they should be checked against what you actually see. We encourage you to ask for each of them.

Boys’ hostel

The boys’ hostel serves students from every course, from NDA aspirants who have just finished Class 12 to graduates preparing for CDS or AFCAT, and candidates who join for a short SSB batch. Students living together in one place tend to form study groups, practise group tasks together and push one another through the daily routine.

When you visit, look at the rooms and the shared spaces, ask how many students share a room, and ask who is in charge of the building after classes end. Ask about laundry, drinking water, power backup and how a student who is unwell is looked after. These are ordinary questions, and a good hostel answers them without hesitation.

Girls’ hostel

Girls stay in a separate hostel, and the academy takes this part of the admission as seriously as any parent does. Girls can prepare with us for the NDA, CDS, AFCAT and the Military Nursing Service, and each official notification sets who is eligible. Our NDA coaching for girls and MNS coaching pages describe the courses.

Safety is not a feature to be advertised in a sentence, so we suggest that you test it yourself. Visit the hostel, meet the person responsible for it and ask for these things in writing:

  • The in-and-out timings on a school day and on a holiday.
  • How outings are approved, and whether a parent is informed when a student leaves the premises.
  • Who may visit, when, and where visitors are received.
  • Who is on duty at night, and how you reach them.
  • What happens when a student is unwell, and which hospital the academy uses.
  • How parents are updated, and how often.

If any of these answers is vague, ask again. A girls’ hostel that is run well is happy to put its rules on paper.

A resident’s day

Study, physical training and SSB practice form the core of the programme, and a hostel student’s day is built around them: classes in Mathematics, General Ability and English, psychology tests and interview practice, physical training and outdoor activity, and time for self-study and revision.

The activities and timings vary by course, batch and season, so ask the counsellor for the current timetable of the batch your child will join. If you want to see how a day can be built, the homepage has a short illustrative walkthrough from the morning session to lights-out.

Food and the mess

Good food is part of training. A student who sleeps badly and eats irregularly can neither train well nor concentrate in an evening study hour. The mess is run for the academy’s residents so that meals are served at fixed times and students do not need to look for food between classes.

When you visit, look at the kitchen and the dining area, and ask:

  • How are meals planned, and can you see a menu?
  • Are vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals handled separately?
  • How are special dietary needs handled, such as allergies or a medical diet?
  • How is drinking water provided, and how is the kitchen kept clean?
  • Who tastes and checks the food, and where does a student complain if something is wrong?

Living away from home: what parents should plan for

Even a well-run hostel does not remove homesickness. Many students are leaving home for the first time, and the first weeks can be hard. Some practical points help.

  • Agree on a call routine. Ask the hostel what time students may use phones, so that you can plan a regular call.
  • Visit early. A family visit after the first month tells you more than any brochure.
  • Keep fitness in mind. A change of climate and routine tires a student at first. Encourage rest and good eating.
  • Talk to the counsellor. If your child is struggling, say so early. A short conversation solves most problems before they grow.
  • Pack simply. Ask what to bring, and avoid costly gadgets, which are a distraction in a study routine.

Who should choose the hostel and who may not need it

If you live in Dehradun and the academy is within easy reach, you may not need the hostel. Day students attend classes, training and study hours and travel home each evening, paying tuition and registration. See the Contact page for directions and distances.

If you live in another city or state, the hostel is usually the sensible choice, since the study and training routine is part of what the course delivers. Students from Uttarakhand and from nearby cities such as Haridwar and Roorkee can weigh a daily journey against the hostel; the right answer depends on distance and on the batch timings.

Visit the hostel before you decide

The best way to judge a hostel is to see it. Book a visit during counselling and a counsellor will show you the hostel, the mess and the classrooms, and discuss the right course and batch for your child. Bring your questions, and bring your child; they will be living in it.
