Best Merchant Navy Coaching in India: How to Choose (and What Coaching Cannot Promise)

How to choose merchant navy coaching: IMU-CET, sponsorship and approved colleges explained from IMU's own documents.

The best merchant navy coaching in India is the one that prepares you for the IMU-CET, because that single entrance test opens every DG Shipping-approved pre-sea course. No coaching centre can promise a seat, and sponsorship comes from a shipping company, not from an institute. This page separates the three things buyers confuse so you can judge any institute before you pay.

What are the three things buyers confuse?

ThingWhat it isWhat to verify
IMU-CET coachingPreparation for the common entrance test that the Indian Maritime University (IMU) conducts every year. The IMU prospectus states that IMU-CET is mandatory for admission to DG Shipping-approved programmes: Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS), B.Sc (Nautical Science) and B.Tech (Marine Engineering).Whether the batch covers the CET subjects and trains you in timed tests. Nothing more can be promised.
Company sponsorshipA ship-owning or ship-managing company sponsors a candidate. In IMU’s prospectus, DNS seats at affiliated institutes are open only to sponsored candidates who also qualify in the IMU-CET.Who the company is, what it will cover, and whether the offer is in writing. Ask the company, not the institute.
DG Shipping-approved collegeA Maritime Training Institute that DG Shipping has approved to run the pre-sea course. IMU’s prospectus says DG Shipping’s training circular of 1 April 2020 requires such institutes to admit on the basis of IMU-CET rank. That the institute and the course appear on DG Shipping’s list of approved institutes, which IMU’s prospectus points to.

A fee paid to a coaching centre buys preparation only. It does not buy a rank, a company, or an approval.

What does the IMU-CET test?

PointWhat the IMU documents state
Programmes it feedsB.Sc (Nautical Science), B.Tech (Marine Engineering), B.Tech (NAOE), B.Tech (NASB) and DNS, among others.
Paper200 multiple-choice questions on English, General Aptitude, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at Class 12 level, set for the undergraduate technical programmes.
MarkingNegative marking applies: 0.25 mark is deducted for every wrong answer.
Mode and date, 2026Computer-based. IMU-CET 2026 was held on 24 May 2026, in two shifts, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm, according to IMU’s notification of 13 May 2026.
Result and cut-off, 2026Results were declared on 14 June 2026. The cut-off percentile for the undergraduate DNS, B.Sc and B.Tech programmes was 60 for General, 54 for General-EWS and OBC-NCL, and 45 for SC and ST.
Counselling for IMU campusesCandidates register on IMU’s counselling portal after the rank list. The 2026-27 prospectus lists a counselling fee of ₹10,000 and, after a seat is allotted, a programme fee of ₹30,000.

Because the paper is three hours long and carries a penalty for wrong answers, a good batch spends its time on full-length timed papers and on teaching you when to leave a question. Class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics do most of the work, with English and general aptitude making up the rest.

Who can apply for the pre-sea courses?

For the three-year B.Sc (Nautical Science) and the four-year B.Tech (Marine Engineering), the 2026-27 prospectus asks for Class 12 with an average of at least 60% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, and at least 50% in English in Class 10 or Class 12. The candidate must be unmarried and must hold a valid IMU-CET rank.

CategoryMaximum age, maleMaximum age, female
General25 years27 years
OBC (non-creamy layer)28 years30 years
SC and ST30 years32 years

Age is counted on 1 August 2026, the start of the academic session. SC and ST candidates get a 5% relaxation in the PCM marks, but not in English. Girls can apply: the age limits above are the prospectus’s own, and it also lists a Maritime Training Trust scholarship of ₹1,00,000 for Indian women seafarers.

Medical fitness follows the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules, 2000, with a certificate from a doctor approved by the Directorate General of Shipping. Colour vision is tested with the Ishihara chart. For Nautical Science the prospectus asks for unaided distance vision of 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the other. For Marine Engineering it accepts 6/12 in each eye, or 6/9 in the better eye and 6/18 in the other. Check your eyes early, because this is where many candidates are surprised.

Can a commerce or arts student join the merchant navy?

Not through the pre-sea courses above, which need Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 12. IMU also offers a three-year BBA (Logistics, Retailing and E-Commerce) and an apprenticeship-embedded BBA (Maritime Logistics) that accept Class 12 in any stream with 50% aggregate and 50% in English. These are non-residential logistics and management degrees, not pre-sea courses. Know which one you are paying for.

How do you spot a sponsorship or seat scam?

On 7 April 2026 IMU issued a public notification about false information that promised seats in the IMU-CET through unfair means. It states that admission to all DG Shipping programmes is strictly based on the IMU-CET, that there are no shortcuts, and that candidates should ignore hoax calls and rely on imu.edu.in. Use these questions as a filter:

  • Is the offer made by a named ship-owning or ship-managing company, and is it in writing?
  • Does the candidate still have to qualify in the IMU-CET? If not, the offer is not what the prospectus describes.
  • Is the college on DG Shipping’s approved list for the exact course?
  • Is anyone asking for money to arrange a rank, a seat or a company letter?

How do you choose merchant navy coaching in India?

Look for a batch that teaches Class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics to the level of a 200-question timed paper, runs full-length mocks, reviews errors, and keeps you informed about IMU’s counselling steps and the medical standard. The batch should say clearly that it prepares you for a test and nothing else.

Families from many states consider Dehradun because it is home to the Indian Military Academy and has a settled student community. GS India Defence Academy offers residential classroom coaching with separate boys’ and girls’ hostels and a mess, and no online classes. Fees are on the fee structure page.

Is the IMU-CET mandatory for merchant navy courses?

For the DG Shipping-approved pre-sea programmes (DNS, B.Sc Nautical Science and B.Tech Marine Engineering), IMU's prospectus says the IMU-CET rank is mandatory at IMU campuses and at every approved institute.

Is there negative marking in the IMU-CET?

Yes. The 2026-27 prospectus states that 0.25 mark is deducted for every wrong answer.

How many questions does the IMU-CET have?

The prospectus lists 200 multiple-choice questions for the undergraduate technical programmes, on English, General Aptitude, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Is DNS sponsorship a fee waiver?

The prospectus defines sponsored candidates as those sponsored by ship-owning or managing companies. It does not describe sponsorship as a fee waiver, so ask the company in writing what it covers.

Yes. The prospectus gives separate age limits for female candidates, and the academic and medical conditions it lists are the same for everyone.

Can I join after Class 12 with commerce or arts?

Not the pre-sea courses, which need Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. IMU's BBA programmes accept any stream but are logistics degrees.

Do you offer online IMU-CET classes?

No. Our coaching is classroom-based in Dehradun.
