That list is short on purpose. It holds what a parent can confirm in a few minutes, and nothing that a brochure merely asserts.
Is Dehradun safe for students, and for girls?
We cannot give you a blanket answer, and we would be wary of anyone who does. We have not put crime statistics on this page because we have no dated, official comparison to cite. What a family can judge is the arrangement around the student: where the student lives, who is in charge, what the rules are and how a problem is raised.
At GS India Defence Academy, boys and girls live in separate hostels, and a mess is run for residents. Parents can visit before admission, see both for themselves and ask for the in-and-out timings, visitor rules and night-duty arrangements in writing. For the journey itself, travel with a parent the first time, reach Dehradun in daylight, share your arrival details with family and keep the hostel’s number saved. These are habits for any new city, not a verdict on this one.
Is Dehradun good for NDA preparation?
It can be, for the right student. The city adds a defence setting, with the military academy a regular part of its landscape, and it adds a residential routine at a distance from home. For a student who needs a fixed daily rhythm, or who would otherwise lose hours to travel, that routine is the real advantage. Preparation here includes classes for the written paper and SSB-focused work, taught in person.
What the city does not do is change the rules. The written examination and the Services Selection Board are the same for every candidate in India, and the centre where you are allotted an SSB does not depend on where you studied. Dehradun may suit your child better than another city, or may not, and the only honest test is to visit and see.

Distances are road estimates. Train timings come from Indian Railways timetable data (erail.in), checked in October 2026, so confirm them on IRCTC or NTES before you book.

Can I still write the exam in my home city?
Yes. Your coaching city and your examination city need not match. The UPSC notification for the NDA and NA Examination (II) 2026 lists centres across the country, among them Delhi, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Patna, Meerut, Prayagraj and Dehradun. UPSC allots centres first-apply-first-allot with a ceiling for each, and does not entertain requests to change a centre afterwards. So apply early and choose the centre you want.
Students from nearby towns
If you live in Haridwar, about 60 km away with a Shatabdi that takes 1 hour 15 minutes, or in Roorkee, about 71 km away and roughly two hours by train, you may not need a hostel at all. A family in the hills or in the plains below them is in a similar position. Whether day attendance suits your child depends on the batch timetable, which the counsellor can show you. When Dehradun is not the right choice
- You want online classes. We offer none, and every class is held in person.
- Your child studies well at home and a trusted academy is nearby. A move adds cost and disruption for no clear gain.
- Your child has never lived away from home and the family is not ready. Visit first, and think about a short stay before a full year.
- You expect the academy alone to do the work. Coaching supports a student who studies every day; it does not replace the effort.
- The journey would make visits home impractical and the family expects frequent ones.
