NDA Foundation Course After 10th in India: How It Works

How an NDA foundation course after Class 10 works, what UPSC requires and what to check before you enrol.

There is no way into the National Defence Academy straight after Class 10. UPSC invites candidates who have passed Class 12 or are appearing in it, so an NDA foundation course after 10th is a two-year plan: your child studies Class 11 and Class 12 at a school while preparing for the NDA inside the same programme. Its whole purpose is to spread mathematics, English, general knowledge, fitness and SSB readiness across two years instead of squeezing them into one.

This page explains how that works, what UPSC requires, what to verify before you enrol in any foundation course in India, and how the course at GS India Defence Academy in Dehradun is set up.

What does “NDA after 10th” really mean?

Families often search for a defence entry after Class 10 and find several courses that sound alike. The official entry points are different, and they come at different ages.

EntryClass of admissionOpen after Class 10?
NDA written examination (UPSC)Candidates who have passed Class 12 or are appearing in itNo. The two years of Class 11 and 12 come first.
Sainik Schools (AISSEE)Class 6 and Class 9 onlyNo. Entry is at Class 6 or Class 9 only.
Rashtriya Indian Military CollegeClass 8 onlyNo.

So “after 10th” is really a decision about how to spend Class 11 and 12. A foundation course answers it by putting schooling and NDA preparation under one roof. A student who instead stays in an ordinary school and joins coaching only in Class 12 can also reach the NDA, but has less time to build the habits the exam rewards.

What UPSC requires from a candidate

The table follows the notification for the NDA and NA Examination (II), 2026, issued on 20 May 2026. The date-of-birth window moves with each cycle, so read the notification for the sitting you are aiming at.

ConditionNDA and NA (II) 2026 notification
CandidatesUnmarried male and female candidates who meet the nationality conditions
Date of birthNot earlier than 1 January 2008 and not later than 1 January 2011 for this sitting
Army wingClass 12 pass of the 10+2 pattern, or an equivalent examination
Air Force and Naval wings, and the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme of the Indian Naval AcademyClass 12 pass with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
Appearing candidatesCandidates appearing in Class 12 can also apply
MarriageA candidate who marries after applying is not selected for training

Two practical points follow. A student who picks Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 11 keeps every wing open, while the Army wing alone accepts any stream. And a student who starts Class 11 can sit the paper in Class 12, provided the date-of-birth window for that sitting includes them.

What the NDA written examination will ask

Show your child the finish line early. The notification lists these stages.

StageSubjectMarksTime
Written paper IMathematics3002 hours 30 minutes
Written paper IIGeneral Ability Test: English 200, General Knowledge 4006002 hours 30 minutes
SSBIntelligence and personality test, for those who qualify the written papers900Several days

Both written papers are objective type. Wrong answers carry a penalty of one-third of the marks for that question, and calculators are not allowed. The General Knowledge half of paper II covers physics, chemistry, general science, social studies, geography and current events, which is why reading has to become a daily habit and not a revision topic.

What a sound two-year plan looks like

StageMain focusWhat a parent should be able to see
Class 11Board syllabus with mathematics built at the same pace; English and a daily reading habit; regular physical training; light SSB habits such as speaking for a minute and writing from picturesA written timetable, a regular school report and a fitness routine that is gradual, not punishing
First half of Class 12Board preparation alongside timed practice in the UPSC format; error analysis after each testTest papers returned with feedback, not just scores
Second half of Class 12Board examinations, then the NDA written paper; SSB preparation for those who qualifyA plan for each outcome, including a second attempt if the first does not work out

A common risk in any combined course is that one side suffers. A child who is weak in school mathematics will feel it in the board exam and the NDA paper alike. Ask the course how it will tell you that early, and how it responds.

Seven things to verify before you enrol in any foundation course

  • The school. Is it recognised, which board does it follow, and will the Class 12 certificate carry your child’s name from the school itself?
  • Who runs what. Find out whether the school and the coaching are one body or two, and who answers if they disagree.
  • Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Check that the school offers them in Class 11, since that keeps the Air Force and Navy open.
  • Total fee. Ask what it covers: schooling, coaching, hostel, mess, books, uniform and test fees. Ask for the second-year fee in writing.
  • Hostel for a 15 or 16 year old. Visit, meet the staff who are on duty at night and read the visiting rules.
  • SSB. Check that SSB preparation is part of the programme and begins before Class 12.
  • The exit. If your child later decides on a different career, the board result and the school record must still stand on their own.

FAQs

Questions parents ask us.

Can't find yours? Ask on WhatsApp; a counsellor usually replies within working hours.

Can I join the NDA after Class 10?

Not directly. UPSC asks for a Class 12 pass, or appearance in Class 12. After Class 10, a foundation course lets a student prepare for the NDA while completing Classes 11 and 12.

Which stream should I choose after Class 10 for the NDA?

Science with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics keeps the Army, Navy and Air Force wings open, and also the Naval Academy 10+2 entry. The Army wing alone accepts any stream.

Can girls join an NDA foundation course and the NDA?

Yes. The UPSC notification invites unmarried male and female candidates. At our academy, boys and girls stay in separate hostels.

What does the GS India NDA foundation course cost?

The course combines schooling with NDA coaching at ₹4,29,000 per year, with hostel included. The fee structure page explains what is covered and what is charged separately.

Is this course online?

No. All teaching is in person in Dehradun.

Can any course promise selection in the NDA?

No. Selection depends on the written paper, the SSB and the vacancies UPSC notifies. A course can prepare your child. It cannot promise the result.
