Which Stream After 10th for NDA? Science, Commerce or Arts

Science, Commerce or Arts after Class 10 for the NDA? A stream-by-stream table of what each choice opens or closes, based on the UPSC notification text.

Choose Science with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) if you want every NDA door to stay open. The Army wing takes a Class 12 pass in any stream, but the Air Force and Naval wings, and the Indian Naval Academy’s 10+2 cadet entry, need Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 12. Commerce and Arts students can still sit the exam for the Army wing, but they face the same Mathematics paper as everyone else.

This answer comes from the UPSC notice for the National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination (II) 2026, the latest we could check on 12 October 2026. It is the text of the notice that settles the question, and not forum opinion. If you are still deciding whether you can sit the exam at all, start with how to prepare for NDA after 10th.

What does UPSC require in Class 12?

The notice sets two educational rules. For the Army wing of the NDA, a Class 12 pass of the 10+2 pattern, or an equivalent examination, is enough. For the Air Force and Naval wings of the NDA and for the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy, the Class 12 pass must be with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Candidates who are appearing in Class 12 can also apply, but candidates in Class 11 cannot.

Which stream opens which door?

Class 12 streamArmy wingAir Force wingNaval wingNaval Academy 10+2 cadet entryWhat to know
Science: Physics, Chemistry, MathematicsYesYesYesYesKeeps every option open and matches the Mathematics paper
Science: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, without MathematicsYesNoNoNoMathematics is missing, so the Air Force and Navy are closed
Commerce, with or without MathematicsYesNoNoNoPhysics and Chemistry are missing
Arts or HumanitiesYesNoNoNoThe Army wing is open, but Mathematics must be learnt separately

The table follows the notice literally. A stream appears under “Yes” for a wing only when its subjects satisfy the written rule. Eligibility for any wing is also subject to the age rule, nationality, being unmarried and the medical standards, and, for the Air Force flying branch, to the pilot aptitude system.

Is there a Class 10 percentage requirement for NDA?

The UPSC notice names no minimum percentage in Class 10, and none in Class 12. The educational condition is a pass. That settles a common myth that a student with low Class 10 marks is barred. Other service websites may add their own details, so read the notice for each exam and the service pages linked below, but the percentage rumours online do not appear in the notification text.

Does every NDA candidate face Mathematics?

Yes. The written exam is the same for all candidates: Mathematics for 300 marks and the General Ability Test for 600 marks, each 2½ hours. The Mathematics syllabus covers algebra, matrices and determinants, trigonometry, analytical geometry, differential and integral calculus, differential equations, vector algebra, statistics and probability. A Commerce or Arts student therefore has to cover Class 11 and 12 level Mathematics outside school, which takes planning.

Science helps on the other paper too. In Part B of the General Ability Test (400 marks), Physics, Chemistry and General Science carry approximately 25, 15 and 10 per cent, which is about half of the part. History, Geography and Current Events carry the rest. Our guide on the UPSC NDA preparation roadmap from Class 9 maps each topic to NCERT classes.

How should I choose a stream?

  • You want the Air Force or Navy: take PCM. There is no route into those wings of the NDA without it.
  • You want the Army and enjoy Mathematics: PCM is still the easiest fit, because Mathematics carries 300 of the 900 written marks.
  • You want the Army and have chosen Commerce or Arts for other reasons: it is possible. Plan for Mathematics tuition or self-study, and expect to start the UPSC syllabus earlier.
  • You are undecided: PCM keeps the most options open.
  • You study at a Rashtriya Military School: the schools offer the Science stream only after Class 10, according to the NTA’s RMS CET-2026 bulletin.

What else matters if I want to fly?

PCM is necessary for the Air Force wing, but it is not enough on its own. Candidates who opt for the Air Force take the Computerised Pilot Selection System after clearing the SSB, if they are willing. The notice says every candidate for the flying branch takes this pilot aptitude test only once, and the grades from that first test count at every later interview. A candidate who fails it cannot apply to the NDA for the flying branch or the Naval Air Arm. A habitual wearer of glasses is not tested for it and can be considered for Air Force Ground Duties if willing, or for the other services as per their choices. For a child who dreams of flying, regular eye check-ups through Classes 9 to 12 matter as much as the stream.

Does the stream rule differ for girls?

No. The educational rules are the same for men and women. Women apply through the same exam, with separate vacancies and separate merit lists. In the 2026 notices, 10 of the 24 women’s vacancies were in the Army, so a girl who takes Arts or Commerce can still target the Army wing, while the Air Force and Navy again need PCM. The numbers are in our guide to NDA vacancies for girls, and the wider picture is in NDA for girls: eligibility.

What about an NDA backup plan?

Selection is competitive and medical fitness matters, so keep a backup. The 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme leads to a four-year B.Tech, while a Science stream also supports engineering and other degrees. Arts and Commerce students can also look at other officer entries after graduation. Read our NDA eligibility criteria for the age and attempt details.
