Himachal Pradesh students reach GS India Defence Academy in Dehradun by road, because no rail line links the state to Dehradun. Solan is about 204 km away and Shimla 249 km, roughly three to four hours on a free-flowing road, while Dharamshala at 385 km needs a full day’s plan. Himachal has three UPSC centres for the NDA and CDS (Dharamshala, Mandi and Shimla) and one Sainik School, at Sujanpur Tira. This page maps the road routes, the exam centres and the school-entry options for a Himachal family.
How do you get from Himachal Pradesh to Dehradun without a train?
Our timetable source shows no train from Kalka to Dehradun or Haridwar, and none from Mandi, Bilaspur or Solan towards Dehradun. From Shimla and Solan the practical route is by road through Paonta Sahib. UTC, the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation, lists a Kotdwar-Shimla service via Paonta Sahib, a Haridwar-Shimla service via Chilla and a Tanakpur-Shimla service via Chandigarh Sector 17; for Dharamshala it lists Tanakpur-Dharamshala via Saharanpur. The list gives neither service class nor timings, so check utconline.uk.gov.in before you travel.
| Town | Road to the academy | Drive estimate | What the data shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solan | 204 km | 3.0 h | No train from Kalka; road is the practical route |
| Shimla | 249 km | 3.6 h | Road via Paonta Sahib; UTC lists three Shimla routes |
| Bilaspur (HP) | 250 km | 3.8 h | No rail link towards Dehradun |
| Hamirpur | 296 km | 4.9 h | Una has a daily MEMU to Haridwar; road is usually more practical |
| Mandi | 300 km | 4.4 h | No rail link towards Dehradun |
| Dharamshala | 385 km | 6.3 h | Pathankot and Una options reach Haridwar only; UTC lists Tanakpur-Dharamshala |
Two rail combinations help families who prefer a train for part of the way. From Una Himachal, the daily 64512 Amb Andaura-Haridwar MEMU leaves at 14:05 and reaches Haridwar at 21:00 (6h 55m), leaving about 60 km by road to the academy. From Chandigarh, the daily 14632 Amritsar-Dehradun Express leaves at 02:30 and reaches Dehradun at 09:45 (7h 15m), and UTC lists Dehradun ISBT-Chandigarh Sector 43 via Paonta Sahib. Our Chandigarh page has the detail. Times are from erail.in on 12 October 2026, so confirm them on IRCTC or NTES.
Mountain roads are slower than a map suggests, and routing estimates assume free-flowing traffic. If you would like to plan the first journey with someone who knows the route, call or WhatsApp +91 70170 31757 for free counselling.
Which Himachal towns host the UPSC NDA and CDS papers?
UPSC’s NDA and Naval Academy Examination (II), 2026 notice lists three Himachal centres: Dharamshala, Mandi and Shimla. The CDS (II) 2026 notice lists the same three. One name causes confusion. The notice also lists Bilaspur, but that is Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh; the town of that name in Himachal is not a centre. Allotment is first-apply-first-allot up to a ceiling at each centre, and UPSC does not entertain a later change of centre.
| Himachal town | UPSC centre? | Nearest centre, straight line |
|---|---|---|
| Shimla | Yes | Shimla |
| Dharamshala | Yes | Dharamshala |
| Mandi | Yes, listed as Mandi (Himachal Pradesh) | Mandi |
| Solan | No | Shimla, about 23 km |
| Hamirpur | No | Mandi, about 39 km |
| Bilaspur (HP) | No | Mandi, about 45 km |
What is the Sainik School option inside Himachal?
The Sainik Schools Society’s list of existing schools names one in this state, Sainik School Sujanpur Tira in Hamirpur district. By straight line it is 15 km from Hamirpur, 40 km from Mandi, 49 km from Dharamshala, 58 km from Bilaspur, 100 km from Shimla and 114 km from Solan. Entry is to Class VI or Class IX through the All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination run by NTA. The Ministry of Defence’s September 2023 list of 23 partnership approvals also names Woods Park School in Hamirpur. Approval does not mean admissions are open, so check the Society’s New Schools page and the NTA bulletin before relying on it.
A Himachal student who is in Class 9 or 10 and wants a military-school route should read the AISSEE admission guide and our Sainik School coaching page. A student who is already past those classes can look at the guide to joining the NDA after Class 10 and 12.
Does RIMC offer Himachal Pradesh a fixed number of seats?
RIMC says only that one vacancy per State is generally allotted, that some States with larger population have up to two, and that seats may vary every year. It gives no Himachal Pradesh figure. RIMC is in Dehradun, so a Himachal family that has chosen Dehradun is in the same city as the college. From the December 2026 examination, for the July 2027 term, the application is online through NTA, the test is at NTA centres and the age window is 12½ to 14 years; RIMC says forms will not be issued through State Government authorities. Our RIMC coaching page and the admission guide take it from there.
Where does the defence tradition show in Himachal?
Yol, a neighbourhood of Dharamshala, is a cantonment and the headquarters of IX Corps. Shimla is the seat of HQ Army Training Command, known as ARTRAC. Sabathu in Solan district is the centre of the 1st and 4th Gorkha Rifles, and Kasauli, also in Solan district, is a cantonment town. Children in these places often grow up near uniforms; none of these institutions is connected with the academy.
Which Himachal town pages will you find here?
Our Himachal pages are Shimla, Dharamshala, Hamirpur, Solan and Mandi. On the plains side, Chandigarh’s page and the Ambala page are the closest published routes on the plains side, and boys and girls both live in separate hostels with a mess; see hostel and mess.
