MNS eligibility depends on which door you use. A woman who has finished Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology enters the Military Nursing Service through the four-year B.Sc Nursing course at an Armed Forces Medical Services college, shortlisted on her NEET (UG) score. A nurse who already holds a B.Sc, Post Basic B.Sc or M.Sc in Nursing enters through a Short Service Commission, which in the 2023-24 cycle meant a computer-based test run by the National Testing Agency, an interview and a medical.
This hub sends you to the right guide and states only what the official pages let us confirm. The Army’s recruitment page for the service opens behind a verification step that we did not bypass, so we relied on the Armed Forces Medical College and National Testing Agency pages and list the Army page in the sources for you to read yourself. GS India Defence Academy is a private coaching academy and not part of the Army or the Medical Services.
What is the Military Nursing Service?
The Armed Forces Medical College describes its College of Nursing as preparing nursing officers for the Army, the Navy and the Air Force, able to work in all health-care settings in war and in peace. The college was raised in November 1964, is recognised by the Indian Nursing Council and offers a four-year basic B.Sc Nursing course with 40 seats at Pune, according to its own page, which was last updated in June 2024. That page is the clearest official picture of what the uniformed nursing career looks like from the education side.
Which route is meant for you?
| Route A: B.Sc Nursing after Class 12 | Route B: Short Service Commission for nurses | |
|---|---|---|
| Who | Women with Class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Biology (AFMC’s older page says only female candidates, at least 50% aggregate, first attempt) | Indian women who are civil-trained B.Sc (N), Post Basic B.Sc (N) or M.Sc (N) nurses, with a State Nursing Council registration |
| Entrance score | NEET (UG), used by the Medical Services for shortlisting | Computer-based test run by the NTA in 2023-24 |
| Then | Interview and medical, then a four-year course | Interview (qualifying mark 50%), then medical |
| Age rule we could confirm | Printed in the AFMC brochure each year; not quoted here | 21 to 35 years on the date set for applications, in the 2023-24 notice |
| Our guide | MNS B.Sc Nursing via NEET | MNS SSC for nursing graduates |
Route A: how does the B.Sc Nursing entry work?
NTA’s NEET (UG) 2026 introduction page says that MNS aspirants seeking admission to the B.Sc Nursing course at Armed Forces Medical Service hospitals for 2026 are required to qualify NEET, and that the score is used for shortlisting for the four-year course. NTA’s notices for 2023 and 2024 say the same. So a student aiming at MNS prepares for NEET (UG) first and for the Army’s interview and medical second.
AFMC’s current nursing admission page lists the BSc Nursing course admission 2025 information brochure, a flow chart for intake and an FAQ on medical standards as its latest documents. Its older page, which still refers to the 2018-19 session, says selection is on all-India merit, followed by an interview and a medical board of military medical officers, and that students are granted permanent and short service commissions at a ratio of 60:40, with short-service students bonded to serve for at least five years. Treat those as the older rule and read the current brochure.
Route B: how does the Short Service Commission entry work?
For nursing graduates the NTA ran the Military Nursing Service Selection for Short Service Commission 2023-24 under the Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services. The computer-based test was held on 14 January 2024, had multiple-choice questions on nursing, English language and general intelligence, was in English only and carried no negative marking. Candidates who qualified went to Base Hospital, Delhi Cantonment, for the interview in March and April 2024, and only those with at least half the interview marks, which the notice puts at 10 marks, went on to the medical.
Does the NDA offer nursing?
No. The UPSC notice for the National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination (II) 2026 invites candidates for the Army, Navy and Air Force wings of the NDA and for the Indian Naval Academy course, and nursing is not among them. Nursing officers come through the routes on this page, not through the NDA. Searches for this question sometimes return the Nigerian Defence Academy, which is unrelated.
If you or your daughter is still choosing between a uniformed medical career and an officer entry, a counsellor can compare them with you. Call or WhatsApp +91 70170 31757 for free counselling; we will tell you honestly if an MNS route is not the right fit.
What about age, marital status and gender?
The two sets of rules are different, and we state only what we could read. The 2023-24 Short Service Commission notice was for Indian women aged 21 to 35 on the date prescribed for receiving applications. For the B.Sc route, AFMC’s older page refers to female candidates and the current brochure carries the age window and marital-status conditions for the year. We could not open that brochure, so we do not quote an age or a marital-status rule for Route A.
What should you keep ready?
- For Route A: your Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets, NEET (UG) admit card and score card, and proof of nationality.
- For Route B: Matriculation or school leaving certificate with date of birth, nursing degree certificates and mark lists, a valid State Nursing Council registration, the NTA score card, a character certificate, proof of nationality, Aadhaar, and a no-objection certificate from the employer if you are working.
- Ten recent coloured passport-size photographs and the call letter in triplicate for the interview stage. The 2024 instructions say scanned photographs are not accepted.

For the Short Service Commission in 2023-24 it was 21 to 35 years on the date set for applications. For the B.Sc route read the AFMC information brochure for the year.

AFMC's older admission page says candidates must have passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Check the current brochure before you choose subjects.
Is there an interview in the MNS selection?
Yes, in both routes as the sources describe them. The 2024 Short Service Commission interview had a qualifying mark of 10, equal to 50%, and AFMC's older page lists an interview before the medical for the B.Sc route.
