No academy can honestly claim to be the best SSB coaching in India for every candidate, because the board itself is the same for everyone and the result depends on you. What you can do is match a coaching programme against how the SSB really works: two stages, three assessors, group tasks that need a group, and a result that comes from your behaviour across all the days. This page gives you that checklist, then explains why parents from many states look at Dehradun and at GS India Defence Academy.
What does the SSB actually test?
Start with the official description, because every claim a coaching centre makes should fit inside it. UPSC’s notices for the NDA and CDS describe a two-stage procedure. Stage I is the Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests plus the Picture Perception and Description Test (PP&DT), and only candidates shortlisted there go on. Stage II is the interview, the Group Testing Officer (GTO) tasks, the psychology tests and the conference, spread over four days.
Three assessors look at you: the Interviewing Officer, the Group Testing Officer and the Psychologist. UPSC states that there is no separate weightage for each test. Marks are given after the assessors consider your performance as a whole, and the tests are designed to show whether Officer Like Qualities are present and whether they can be trained. The Indian Navy’s page groups those qualities as planning and organising ability, social adaptability, social effectiveness and dynamic ability.
For the NDA, the SSB carries 900 marks, the same as the entire written examination (Mathematics 300 plus General Ability Test 600). For CDS the interview marks are 300 for IMA, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy and 200 for OTA. That is why SSB preparation is not an add-on. If you want the day-by-day detail, read our SSB interview process guide.
A seven-point checklist for any SSB coaching in India
| Check | Why it matters | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| It follows the real structure | The board runs Stage I first and sends back candidates who are not shortlisted. Practice that skips this order misleads you. | Ask for the day-wise plan: screening first, then psychology, group tasks, interview and conference. |
| Full mock boards with feedback | Individual topic classes do not show how your behaviour holds up across days. | Ask how many complete mock boards a batch gets, and whether feedback is written and given to you personally. |
| Group size for group tasks | Group tasks need a real group. Practising in a tiny batch, or alone, teaches you little. | Ask how many candidates stand in one mock group and who is in it. |
| Who observes and reads your work | The board uses an interviewing officer, a GTO and a psychologist. Feedback should come from people who can explain their background. | Ask who will watch your tasks and read your written tests, and what experience they have. Verify it yourself. |
| Consistency work, not model answers | The board compares your tests, tasks and interview. Memorised answers break that consistency. | Ask whether you are taught to reflect on your own record or to repeat prepared lines. |
| Fitness and outdoor practice | The Air Force suggests aiming to run one mile (1.6 km) in 10 minutes and to manage 10 push-ups and 3 chin-ups before reporting. | Ask where outdoor tasks are practised and how fitness fits into the day. |
| Honest claims | Selection is decided by the board, not by a coaching centre. | Be careful with institutes that quote selection counts, ranks or promises. Ask what you can check yourself. |
Sources for the SSB structure
Does the city you train in decide your SSB centre?
No. Where you coach and where you are tested are separate things. The services allot boards in different ways. For the Air Force, candidates who clear AFCAT choose an AFSB date and venue themselves on the AFCAT portal, from the seats available. For the Army, the UPSC notice says that candidates who qualify register on the Directorate General of Recruiting website and are allotted Selection Centres through it. The Navy lists its boards at Bangalore, Bhopal, Visakhapatnam and Kolkata, allows a change of dates only in exceptional cases and does not allow a change of venue.
So a coaching centre cannot promise you a particular board. It can only prepare you for the process. One of the five Air Force Selection Boards, 1 AFSB, is in Dehradun at Clement Town; that is a fact about the city, not a promise about your call-up. Our list of SSB centres in India shows every board with its source, and our 1 AFSB Dehradun guide covers reporting and stay.
What should SSB coaching fees be compared on?
Do not compare headline fees alone. Compare what the fee includes: the number of complete mock boards, whether hostel and mess are part of the price, the length of the programme and any extra charge for outdoor or physical training. Ask for the fee in writing, with the hostel option shown separately, and ask what happens to the fee if you leave early. Our own current fees are published openly on the fee structure page, and hostel details are on the hostel and mess page.
Remember also what the services themselves pay for. The Army and Air Force provide free boarding and lodging while you are at the board, and a candidate appearing for the first time for a type of commission is entitled to travel reimbursement, which in the Air Force’s case is the AC-III Tier or AC Chair Car fare or actual bus fare. Keep that in mind when you work out the real cost of the whole attempt.
Why do parents from other states look at Dehradun?
Dehradun is the home of the Indian Military Academy, and the Air Force Selection Board 1 AFSB sits in the same city. For a family sending a teenager away for SSB-focused preparation, the surroundings matter: a candidate who studies where officers are trained sees what the goal looks like every day. That is a reason to visit, not proof of a better result, and you should judge any city and any academy by what you see on the visit.
GS India Defence Academy is at Street 1, Subharti Road, Nanda Ki Chowki, Lower Kolhupani, Dehradun 248007. We run residential classroom coaching, with separate hostels for boys and girls and a mess, and our preparation is built around the SSB. We teach in person only and do not offer online classes. If you would like to talk through your situation before you travel, free counselling is available by phone or WhatsApp on +91 70170 31757, and you are welcome to ask for the daily routine in writing.
Questions to ask on a visit, whichever academy you choose
- Can I see a day-wise plan for the whole programme, and where the mock boards fall in it?
- How many candidates are in a mock group, and are boys and girls prepared in separate batches?
- Who gives feedback after a mock board, and is it given face to face and in writing?
- Where do outdoor tasks happen, and what is the fitness routine?
- Which entries do you prepare for, and can the same plan serve NDA, CDS and AFCAT candidates?
- What exactly does the fee cover, with and without hostel, and what is the refund position if I leave?
- Can I speak to a current student’s parent, and can I sit in on a class before I decide?
If a centre cannot answer these plainly, treat that as information. Our guide to choosing NDA coaching in Dehradun uses the same logic for the written exam, and the SSB practice tools let you test yourself before you spend anything.
Best SSB coaching in India: common questions
FAQs
Questions parents ask us.
Can't find yours? Ask on WhatsApp; a counsellor usually replies within working hours.
Ask on WhatsAppWhich is the best SSB coaching in India?
There is no honest single answer, because the board tests you and not your coaching centre. Choose the programme that follows the real two-stage structure, gives you complete mock boards with personal feedback, practises group tasks in real groups and publishes its fees clearly. Visit before you decide.
Can I choose my SSB centre?
It depends on the service. AFCAT candidates choose an AFSB date and venue on the AFCAT portal from the seats available. Army centres are allotted through the Directorate General of Recruiting website. The Navy does not allow a change of venue. Your call-up letter is final.
Is the stay at the SSB free?
Yes. The Army and Air Force provide free boarding and lodging during testing. Candidates who arrive earlier than the date on the call letter must arrange their own stay.
Is SSB coaching necessary?
It is not required, and many candidates prepare on their own. Coaching helps mainly with the parts that are hard to practise alone, such as group tasks and feedback on how you come across. Decide after reading the structure of the board.
How much does SSB coaching cost?
Fees vary by programme length and by whether hostel is included. Compare what is covered, and see our current fees on the fee structure page.
Does GS India offer online SSB coaching?
No. We teach in person at our Dehradun campus, with separate boys' and girls' hostels and a mess.
