SSB Personal Interview and Questions: How the Interview Works

How the SSB personal interview works and how its questions are organised, without model answers to memorise.

The SSB personal interview is a conversation with the Interviewing Officer (IO), one of the board’s three assessors. The questions are not a fixed list. They grow out of what you have written about yourself, especially in the Personal Information Questionnaire (PIQ) that candidates fill in at the board, and out of the qualities the board is looking for. The best way to prepare is to know your own record thoroughly and to answer honestly, not to learn scripted replies.

This page is also our stage guide for the interview. We have grouped typical questions by the area of your life they come from and by what the IO is probing, and we show how a consistent answer differs from a rehearsed one. We do not provide model answers, because an answer that is good for one person is wrong for another.

What do the services say about the interview?

SourceWhat it says
UPSC (NDA and CDS notices)Stage II comprises the interview, the GTO tasks, the psychology tests and the conference. The interviewing officer is one of three assessors. No separate weightage is given to each test, and marks are allotted after considering performance in all the tests together. Marks for the conference are allotted on the basis of the initial performance in the three techniques and the decision of the board.
Indian Air Force (AFCAT portal)The Personal Information Questionnaire is filled on Day 1. The interview is a personal conversation with an Interviewing Officer, and interviews and group tests are held over the following days. The board conference follows.
Army (call-up letter)Stage II is held over four days after Stage I. Candidates bring dark trousers, a light shirt, brown or black shoes and an optional tie for the interview, and apparel bearing school or institute logos is prohibited. Mobile phones are deposited on arrival.

The services do not publish interview questions or the length of the interview. Any list of ‘official’ questions you see online is not from the services. What they do say is that the tests, including the interview, are designed to bring out the presence or absence of Officer Like Qualities and their trainability.

Which questions are asked, grouped by what the IO is probing?

The table groups typical questions the way an interviewer thinks. The questions are illustrations written by us. Your own interview will follow your own record, so use the table to see the pattern, not to build a list of answers.

Area of your lifeTypical questionsWhat the IO is probing
Family and backgroundTell me about your family. What does your father do? Who influenced you most?Social adaptability, values and how you relate to others
EducationWhy did you choose this stream? Which subject did you enjoy least, and why?Reasoning, honesty about strengths and weaknesses
Activities and hobbiesYou have listed cricket. What did you learn from being captain? When did a match go badly?Initiative, responsibility and how you handle setbacks
Work and responsibilitiesWhat did you do in your last job or project? What went wrong, and what did you do about it?Planning and organising ability, accountability
MotivationWhy the armed forces? What other options did you consider?Determination and whether the reason is your own
Self-assessmentWhat are your strengths and weaknesses? What are you doing about the weakness?Self-awareness, consistency with your written tests
Current affairs and general awarenessWhat is the biggest news in the country this week? Why does it matter to you?Effective thinking and interest in the world
SituationsIf you were leading a team and a member refused to follow an order, what would you do?Social effectiveness and judgement

What is the difference between a consistent answer and a rehearsed one?

A rehearsed answer is fluent but empty. A consistent answer matches your PIQ, your psychology tests and your group tasks, and it has specifics that only you would know. Consider the same question.

QuestionA rehearsed answerA consistent answer
Why do you want to join the armed forces?I want to serve the nation and wear the uniform with pride, and the armed forces are the best way to do it.I captained my school’s football team and enjoyed leading a group under pressure. My uncle served in the Army and I visited his unit once. I want a career where I lead people on real tasks.
What is your weakness?I work too hard and expect too much from others.I get impatient when work moves slowly. I now plan my day in advance and ask teammates how long a task will take before I judge.

Neither answer is a script to copy. Their difference is that the second one invites a follow-up, because it points to events the IO can ask about, and you can talk about them honestly for as long as the IO wants.

How should you prepare from your own PIQ?

  1. Fill in a practice PIQ, being truthful. Include only what you can talk about in detail.
  2. For each entry, write three facts, one reason you did it and one thing you learned from it.
  3. Read your PIQ as an interviewer would and mark every line you would ask about if you were sitting across the table.
  4. Practise aloud with a friend who has not read your notes. Stop them when you notice you are reciting.
  5. Keep up with the news each day. Be ready to say what happened, why, and what you think, in your own words.
  6. Be ready to say ‘I do not know’ when you do not. It is better than guessing, and the IO will see the honesty.

How should you present yourself?

The Army letter sets out the interview dress: dark-coloured trousers, a light-coloured shirt, brown or black shoes and an optional tie. It also bans ties, blazers and apparel carrying the logo of a school, academy or institute. More important than the clothes is conduct. Greet the IO, sit when invited, speak clearly and look at the person who is speaking. Think before you answer a hard question, and do not argue. Our SSB interview process guide gives the whole sequence.

Which mistakes cost candidates in the interview?

  • Giving an answer that contradicts something you wrote on the PIQ or in the psychology tests.
  • Claiming interests you cannot discuss in detail.
  • Reciting facts about the services that you learned for the interview, without any personal link.
  • Becoming defensive when a question challenges you.
  • Answering at length without letting the IO steer the conversation.

The other parts of the board are covered in PPDT and OIR, psychology tests and GTO tasks, and the SSB practice tools are available for timed practice.

What questions are asked in the SSB interview?

They follow your own record and the qualities the board assesses: family, education, activities, motivation, strengths and weaknesses, current affairs and situations. There is no published list.

Are there model answers for the SSB interview?

No. An answer that is good for one candidate is wrong for another. The best answers are honest, specific and consistent with your PIQ and tests.

What is the PIQ?

The Personal Information Questionnaire, which candidates fill in at the board. The Air Force schedule shows it being filled on Day 1.

How long is the SSB interview?

The services do not publish a duration. The interview is held over the Stage II days, and your call letter gives the schedule.

What should I wear for the SSB interview?

The Army letter lists dark trousers, a light shirt, brown or black shoes and an optional tie, with no logos of schools or institutes.

Does the interview decide my result?

No single test decides it. UPSC says there is no separate weightage for each test and marks are given after considering performance in all of them together.

To rehearse the interview with feedback, see our classroom SSB training in Dehradun page, or call or message us on WhatsApp at +91 70170 31757.
