Best CDS Coaching in India: How to Choose (IMA, INA, AFA, OTA)

Choose CDS coaching by your track and by what the exam demands, not by self-ranked lists.

The best CDS coaching in India is the one that fits your track, because the Combined Defence Services Examination is really five different routes under one UPSC notice. IMA, the Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy need an Elementary Mathematics paper and different degrees, while OTA has no Mathematics paper at all. Decide which track you are on, then judge any academy on whether it covers the written papers, the SSB and the practice volume that track needs.

Which CDS track are you on?

The table below is taken from the UPSC notice for the Combined Defence Services Examination (II), 2026. Check the same table in the latest notice when the next one is published, because vacancies, dates and conditions can change.

AcademyWho can applyDegree neededWritten papersMarks: written / interview
Indian Military Academy, DehradunUnmarried menDegree of a recognised universityEnglish, General Knowledge, Elementary Mathematics300 / 300
Indian Naval Academy, EzhimalaUnmarried menEngineering degree, or B.Sc. with Physics as a core or elective subject, with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2English, General Knowledge, Elementary Mathematics300 / 300
Air Force Academy, HyderabadMen; must be unmarried if under 25 (Computer Pilot Selection System applies)Degree with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2, or Bachelor of EngineeringEnglish, General Knowledge, Elementary Mathematics300 / 300
Officers’ Training Academy, Chennai (men)Unmarried menDegree of a recognised universityEnglish, General Knowledge200 / 200
Officers’ Training Academy, Chennai (women)Unmarried women, issueless widows and issueless divorcees who have not remarriedDegree of a recognised universityEnglish, General Knowledge200 / 200

That one table already changes how you should compare coaching. A candidate aiming only for OTA does not need a Mathematics batch, and a candidate aiming for the Naval Academy or Air Force Academy cannot skip it. Our CDS eligibility and syllabus guide gives the age window for each track.

What must a CDS batch cover?

Use this list when you speak to any institute. Each point comes from how the examination is built.

  • The right papers for your track. Each paper is 100 marks and two hours. Elementary Mathematics is set at matriculation level, while English and General Knowledge are set approximately at the level expected of an Indian graduate.
  • Objective-type practice with negative marking. Every wrong answer costs one third of the marks for that question, and calculators are not allowed. Timed full-length tests teach you when to leave a question.
  • Current affairs on a routine. General Knowledge covers current events, everyday scientific observation, Indian history and geography.
  • SSB hours, not just a final-month session. The interview carries as many marks as the written papers do for IMA, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy. Ask how many hours go into the five-day process, and whether group tasks are practised with real groups.
  • Batch size and feedback. Ask how many candidates sit in a class and in a mock group.
  • A plan around your degree. Final-year students can apply, but must show proof of passing by the date in the notice. A good centre helps you plan around that date.

Common mistakes when choosing CDS coaching

  • Trusting a list that an institute wrote about itself. Many rankings online are published by the institutes they rank. Ask for facts you can check, such as the plan, the batch size and the fee.
  • Ignoring your own track. A batch built around Mathematics is wasted effort if you are applying only to OTA, and an OTA-style batch is not enough for the Naval Academy.
  • Leaving the SSB for later. The CDS (II) 2026 notice says candidates who qualify for IMA, the Naval Academy or the Air Force Academy are detailed for the SSB in February and March 2027, and candidates who qualified for OTA only in April to June 2027. Written and SSB preparation therefore overlap, and a plan should start both early.
  • Paying for hostel without seeing it. Visit the hostel and the mess, and ask whether boys and girls are accommodated separately.

Does residential coaching make sense for a graduate?

It depends on where you are in life. Many CDS candidates are in their final year of college or already working, and some cannot move to another city for months. Others have finished their degree and can give the preparation full time. Residential coaching suits the second group, and it can suit the first during a dedicated stretch before the written exam or the SSB.

If you are still studying, ask how the batch timings fit your college schedule and whether you can join for a limited period. If you are free full time, look at the day: how many hours go to the papers, how many to SSB-style work, and what time is left for revision and fitness.

Why do CDS aspirants look at Dehradun?

The Indian Military Academy is in Dehradun, and for many candidates it is the track they want most. The Air Force Selection Board 1 AFSB is also in the city. Living in such a place for a few months is not a qualification, but candidates often find it easier to keep a routine when the goal is part of the surroundings.

GS India Defence Academy is at Street 1, Subharti Road, Nanda Ki Chowki, Lower Kolhupani, Dehradun 248007. We offer residential classroom coaching with separate hostels for boys and girls and a mess, and our preparation is SSB-focused. There are no online classes. If you want to talk through your track before you visit, free counselling is available by phone or WhatsApp on +91 70170 31757. Current fees, with and without hostel, are on the fee structure page.

Dates and costs to plan around

UPSC scheduled CDS (II) 2026 for 13 September 2026. The UPSC calendar for 2027 lists CDS (I) 2027 with the notification on 2 December 2026, the last date for applications on 22 December 2026 and the examination on 11 April 2027. The calendar says dates are liable to change. Our CDS notification and exam dates page tracks the notice. The UPSC examination fee in the 2026 notice is ₹200, and women and SC/ST candidates pay nothing.

FAQs

Which is the best CDS coaching in India?

No institute can honestly claim that title for every candidate. First pick your track, then check whether the batch covers the papers for it, how many SSB hours it gives, how large its batches are and what the fees include. Visit and ask for the plan in writing.

What is the difference between OTA and IMA?

IMA, Dehradun, offers a permanent commission and its CDS candidates take English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics. OTA, Chennai, takes a short service commission course and its CDS candidates take only English and General Knowledge.

Is there a minimum graduation percentage for CDS?

The UPSC notice names the degree required for each academy but does not state a minimum percentage. Read the current notice for the cycle you apply under.

Can girls apply for CDS?

Yes, for the Officers' Training Academy, Chennai, SSC Women (Non-Technical) course. The CDS (II) 2026 notice lists 18 vacancies for women and says women are not required to pay the examination fee.

Is coaching necessary for CDS?

It is not compulsory. Candidates who prepare alone often find group tasks and SSB feedback the hardest parts to practise without a batch.

Do you offer online CDS classes?

No. All our classes are held in person in Dehradun.

If you are weighing options, see how our classroom programme is set out on the CDS coaching in Dehradun page, or call or message us on WhatsApp at +91 70170 31757.
