The Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, trains officers for Permanent Commission in the Army. The Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, trains officers for Short Service Commission, which runs for 14 years in the notice’s terms: an initial ten, extendable by four. Both turn out Lieutenants. The real difference is the type of commission, the entries that feed each academy and the number of seats. Neither is “better” in itself; they suit different aims.
This comparison uses the Army’s own academy pages and UPSC’s CDS (II) 2026 notice, and it flags where we could not confirm a detail. Checked on 12 October 2026.

Everything in the table comes from the CDS (II) 2026 notice or the Army’s IMA and OTA pages. The Army’s OTA Chennai page describes a campus of 637.65 acres beside the Adyar river, about 15 km from Chennai Central railway station.
Permanent versus short service commission
This is the heart of the comparison, and the CDS notice states the terms.
- Permanent Commission (IMA). The notice says commission from IMA is permanent, on successful completion of training and subject to medical fitness.
- Short Service Commission (OTA). SSC is granted for 14 years: an initial period of ten years, extendable by four. Officers who wish to continue after ten years may be considered for Permanent Commission in the tenth year, in accordance with policy, if they are eligible and suitable. Those not selected may continue up to 14 years in all and are then released.
- Early release. The notice has a special provision for SSC (Non-Technical) officers who want to leave after five years of service. They may apply in the fifth year and Army Headquarters decides each application. Officers who have been through an engineering degree or a similar specialised course are not released before 14 years unless the cost is recovered.
- Promotion and seniority. SSC officers are eligible for substantive promotion to Captain after two years of reckonable commissioned service, to Major after six and to Lieutenant Colonel after 13. To adjust for the shorter training, the notice says SSC officers’ seniority is depressed by the difference in training time compared with Permanent Commission officers.
- Pay. The stipend is the same during training at both: ₹56,100 a month, which is the starting pay in Level 10. On commissioning, pay is fixed in the first cell of Level 10.
Which entries feed each academy
IMA takes cadets from three streams. The Army’s IMA page lists them: ex-NDA and ex-Army Cadet College cadets as the regular course, Direct Entry graduates through the CDS, and the Technical Graduate Course for engineers who are selected by the SSB with no written examination. Our IMA Dehradun guide covers each in turn.
OTA Chennai takes Short Service Commission entries. The Army’s pages list SSC Non-Technical for men and women (age 19 to 25, a graduate, 49 weeks of training) and SSC Technical for engineering graduates (age 20 to 27, 49 weeks). The CDS fills the Non-Technical vacancies.
OTA Gaya is a different academy
Searches for “OTA Gaya vs Chennai” usually mix up two courses. According to the Army’s page, OTA Gaya trains the Technical Entry Scheme cadets, who spend a year there on basic military training before three years of a degree course at the Cadet Training Wings at Mhow, Pune and Secunderabad. It also trains the Special Commissioned Officers course. OTA Chennai trains the Short Service Commission courses. The Army’s page puts Gaya on an estate of about 870 acres, 14 km from Bodhgaya. We cover the technical routes in our TES and TGC guide.
IMA, INA and AFA: the other CDS academies
People also ask how IMA compares with the Indian Naval Academy (INA) and the Air Force Academy (AFA), because the same examination fills all three. The CDS (II) 2026 notice gives these terms.
| IMA, Dehradun | INA, Ezhimala | AFA, Hyderabad | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Service | Army | Navy, Executive Branch | Air Force |
| Vacancies | 100 | 26 | 32 |
| Age | 19 to 24 | 19 to 24 | 20 to 24 (up to 26 with a valid DGCA Commercial Pilot Licence) |
| Qualification | Any degree | Engineering degree, or BSc with Physics, with Physics and Mathematics at Class 12 | Degree with Physics and Mathematics at Class 12, or BE |
| Extra tests | SSB | SSB | Pilot aptitude (CPSS) and Air Force medicals; AFA must be the first choice |
| Training | About 18 months | About 18 months to commissioning as a Sub-Lieutenant | About 74 weeks for the flying branch |
Which should you choose?
Use the facts above rather than reputation.
- If you want a Permanent Commission from the start and are a man applying through the CDS, IMA is the entry. Seats are fewer (100 in the 2026 notice), and the CDS cut-off figures for IMA are in our CDS cut-off page.
- If you are open to a ten-year initial term with a path to Permanent Commission in the tenth year if selected, or to release at five years in the non-technical case, OTA gives far more vacancies (275 for men and 18 for women in the 2026 notice) and requires one paper fewer.
- If you are a woman applying through the CDS, OTA is the entry. Women also reach IMA through the NDA, which is a different examination and age group.
- If you want both, the notice has a rule you should know. A man competing for both IMA and OTA must list OTA as his last preference. Otherwise OTA is treated as the last choice even if he ranks it higher. Candidates who qualify for IMA, INA or AFA but miss a seat can be considered for the Short Service Commission if they are willing, even without having listed it, after those who chose it.

A note for Dehradun readers
IMA sits in our own city, which is why many local families ask about it. The Academy trains only those who have already been selected. Living near it brings no admission benefit, and entry is only through the selection routes described above. For the written stage, see the CDS previous year papers page.

Ask on WhatsAppWhat is the main difference between OTA and IMA?
IMA gives Permanent Commission. OTA gives Short Service Commission for 14 years (ten plus four), with a chance of Permanent Commission in the tenth year under the notice's terms. Both commission officers as Lieutenants.
Which is tougher, IMA or OTA?
The CDS cut-off files show different totals because IMA candidates take three papers and OTA two, so the figures cannot be compared directly. IMA has far fewer vacancies than OTA: 100 against 293 in the 2026 notice.
Is OTA training shorter than IMA?
Yes. OTA training is about 49 weeks and the CDS Direct Entry at IMA is about 18 months.
Can women join IMA through the CDS?
In the CDS (II) 2026 notice women are considered only for the Short Service Commission at OTA Chennai.
Is the pay different at IMA and OTA?
The notice lists the same stipend, ₹56,100 a month, during training at both. After commissioning, pay follows the officer's rank and the pay matrix in the notice.
What is the difference between OTA Gaya and OTA Chennai?
OTA Gaya trains Technical Entry Scheme cadets and Special Commissioned Officers. OTA Chennai trains the Short Service Commission courses, including those filled through the CDS.
