Girls can apply to the National Defence Academy. The UPSC notification for the NDA and NA Examination (II), 2026 invites unmarried male and female candidates, and the same page of rules sets one date-of-birth window and one education condition for both. So the real question for a family is not whether a girl may take the exam, but where she should prepare and how to tell a safe, well-run academy from a glossy brochure. That is why “best NDA coaching for girls in India” is better treated as a checklist than as a ranking.
This page sets out what the official notices say, then gives you a visit-and-ask list for judging the hostel and the coaching at any academy in India, ours included.
What do the official notices say about girls?
| Entry | What the official document says | Where to read it |
|---|---|---|
| NDA, after Class 12 | Only unmarried male and female candidates born between 1 January 2008 and 1 January 2011 are eligible for the 2026 (II) sitting. A Class 12 pass is required, and candidates appearing in Class 12 can also apply. | UPSC notification, NDA and NA (II) 2026 |
| Sainik Schools, Class 6 | Admission for girls is open, with the same age criteria as boys. | NTA, AISSEE-2026 information bulletin |
| Sainik Schools, Class 9 | Admission for girls is open, subject to availability of vacancies. | NTA, AISSEE-2026 information bulletin |
The Sainik Schools Society extended the admission of girls from the pilot at Sainik School Chhingchhip to other Sainik Schools in a phased manner from the 2021-22 session, according to its order of 28 October 2019. Rules and dates change every cycle, so read the notification for the sitting you are aiming at. We make no claim on this page beyond what these documents state.
Which route suits a girl at which age?
- Class 12 passed or appearing: the NDA written examination, followed by the Services Selection Board for those who qualify.
- Class 10 passed: there is no NDA entry yet, but a two-year foundation course lets her prepare while studying Class 11 and 12. Our page on the NDA foundation course after 10th explains how it works.
- Class 5 or Class 8: the AISSEE opens Sainik School entry for Class 6 and Class 9. See our AISSEE eligibility guide for the conditions on girls.
The exam a girl prepares for
Show her the finish line early. The notification lists these stages for every candidate who applies.
| Stage | Subject | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Written paper I | Mathematics | 300 | 2 hours 30 minutes |
| Written paper II | General Ability Test: English 200, General Knowledge 400 | 600 | 2 hours 30 minutes |
| SSB | Intelligence and personality test, for those who qualify the written papers | 900 | Several days |
Both papers are objective type with a penalty of one-third of the marks for each wrong answer, and calculators are not permitted. A strong academy for any candidate should show you full-length papers in this format, a review of every paper and a plan for the SSB.
Ten things to see and ask when you visit a girls’ hostel
A hostel claim in a brochure is only a claim. These are the points a parent can check in person, and the answers should be given in writing.
- Is the girls’ block separate from the boys’ block, and does it have its own entrance?
- Who is on duty at night, and is a woman in charge? How can you reach her directly?
- What are the visiting and outing rules, who may meet your daughter and what identification is checked?
- How are visitors recorded at the gate?
- What lighting and monitoring exist in common areas? Ask to see them instead of assuming.
- Where is the mess, who supervises it, and how are special diets and hygiene handled?
- What happens if she is unwell at night, and which hospital is nearest?
- Who do you call in an emergency, and at what hours is someone certain to pick up?
- For girls from another state, is a local guardian required, and what does that involve?
- How are complaints made and who hears them? Ask for the process in writing.
The aim is not to interrogate a school. It is to see whether the people running the hostel can answer plainly. Staff who are happy to be asked, and who write the answers down, are usually the ones who have thought it through.
What we can state about our own hostel
GS India Defence Academy has a separate girls’ hostel and a mess, kept apart from the boys’ hostel, in Dehradun at Street 1, Subharti Road, Nanda Ki Chowki, Lower Kolhupani, Dehradun 248007. Dehradun is also the home of the Indian Military Academy, and some families like that setting for a daughter who hopes to serve. We do not offer online classes; all teaching is in person.
We would rather not describe more on a web page than we can show you in person. Please visit with your daughter, see the rooms and the dining area, and put every question from the list above. Free counselling is available by phone or WhatsApp on +91 70170 31757. For the programme itself, our existing page on NDA coaching for girls in Dehradun goes through the batch in detail, so we do not repeat it here.
Judging the coaching, not just the hostel
- Mock tests: are they in the UPSC format and timing, and are they returned with a question-by-question review?
- Mathematics and General Ability: does the timetable give real time to both papers, with the English and General Knowledge halves of paper II taught separately?
- SSB: is there preparation for the psychology tests, group tasks and interview, and when does it begin?
- Fitness: is training scaled to the individual and led by someone qualified to do so?
- Fees: what is the total, what does it include, and what can be refunded? Ask for it on paper. Our own figures are on the fee structure page.
- Claims: be careful with any academy that quotes selection numbers it cannot back with a public record.
