Best AFCAT Coaching in India: Flying, Technical and Ground Duty

Judge AFCAT coaching against what the exam tests: an online written paper, then the Air Force Selection Board.

The best AFCAT coaching in India is the one that prepares you for both halves of the selection: the online AFCAT paper and the Air Force Selection Board (AFSB) that follows it. No ranking can tell you which academy that is, so this page sets out what AFCAT really tests, how the flying, technical and ground duty entries differ, and what to check in any coaching programme before you pay a fee.

What does AFCAT actually test?

The Indian Air Force’s AFCAT 02/2026 notification describes a single online paper followed by the selection board. The table summarises it.

StageWhat happensDetail from the IAF notification
Online AFCATOne paper, English only2 hours, 100 questions, 300 marks. Three marks for a correct answer, one mark deducted for a wrong answer, nothing for a question left blank.
SubjectsFour areas in the one paperGeneral Awareness; Verbal Ability in English; Numerical Ability; Reasoning and Military Aptitude Test. Numerical Ability is at matriculation level and the others at graduation level.
AFSB Stage IFirst day of the boardOfficer Intelligence Rating test and Picture Perception and Discussion test. Candidates who do not qualify are sent back on the first day.
AFSB Stage IIPsychology, group tests, interviewThe psychological test is held on the evening of Day 1. Group tests and the interview follow over the next days.
CPSSFlying branch onlyThe Computerised Pilot Selection System is given to recommended flying candidates. It is a once-in-a-lifetime test.
Medical and meritAfter the boardRecommended candidates are examined medically. The merit list combines written and AFSB marks.

Technical candidates have a second door. The notification allows Ground Duty (Technical) candidates to apply through AFCAT, through GATE score entry or both. GATE score entry candidates skip the AFCAT paper and are called directly to an AFSB.

Which AFCAT entry are you? Flying, technical or ground duty

Your branch decides which preparation matters most. The age windows below are from the 02/2026 notification and are counted on the date the course starts, so they move each cycle.

FlyingMathematics and Physics at 10+2, plus a three-year degree in any discipline, or a four-year BE/B Tech, or Sections A and B of the Associate Membership of the Institution of Engineers (India) or the Aeronautical Society of India20 to 24 years (up to 26 for a valid DGCA Commercial Pilot Licence holder)

Our AFCAT eligibility guide covers each branch in detail, and the eligibility checker lets you test your own dates.

What should AFCAT coaching actually cover?

  • Practice on the real format. The paper is online, 100 questions in two hours with one mark lost for each wrong answer. Ask how many timed online mocks you will get. The portal also offers a free online practice test.
  • English-only preparation. The paper is in English, so comprehension, error spotting and vocabulary deserve steady daily work.
  • General Awareness with defence. The notification lists history, geography, sports, polity, economy, science and technology, current affairs and defence.
  • Military Aptitude and reasoning. Verbal and non-verbal reasoning is part of the one paper.
  • An AFSB plan. After a good score you still have to clear screening on Day 1, then psychology, group tests and interview. Ask how the programme prepares you for each.
  • Honest handling of CPSS and eyesight. A candidate who has failed CPSS earlier cannot apply to the flying branch, and habitual wearers of glasses must meet the medical criteria given in the notification.
  • Fitness. The IAF advises aiming to run one mile in 10 minutes, with 10 push-ups and 3 chin-ups, before you report to the board.

When you compare institutes, ask how the programme treats the two halves differently. The online paper rewards speed, accuracy and a calm response to negative marking, so it is built from repeated timed practice. The board rewards consistency and group behaviour, so it is built from practice with other candidates and honest feedback. A programme that treats both as one long lecture series is not matched to either. Our SSB interview process guide shows how many separate things the board tests.

How a residential batch in Dehradun fits the AFCAT calendar

AFCAT is held twice a year. Cycle 01/2026 had its paper on 31 January 2026, and cycle 02/2026 on 8 August 2026. Candidates who qualify choose their AFSB date and venue on the AFCAT portal, from the seats on offer. One of the five boards, 1 AFSB, is in Dehradun at Clement Town, and our 1 AFSB Dehradun guide explains reporting and stay. We do not claim that training in the same city gives you any advantage in selection; it simply means you know the place when you report.

GS India Defence Academy offers residential classroom coaching at Street 1, Subharti Road, Nanda Ki Chowki, Lower Kolhupani, Dehradun 248007, with separate hostels for boys and girls and a mess. Our preparation is SSB-focused, and AFCAT is one of the courses we run. We teach in person only. If you want to talk through your branch and your dates, free counselling is available by phone or WhatsApp on +91 70170 31757. Current fees are on the fee structure page.

What to remember about dates and fees

The AFCAT examination fee in the 02/2026 notification is ₹550 plus GST, and it does not apply to NCC special entry or GATE score entry. As of 12 October 2026 the AFCAT portal lists 02/2026 as its latest cycle and shows no date for the next one. Our AFCAT notification and exam dates page keeps the dates in one place.

Best AFCAT coaching in India: common questions

FAQs

Questions parents ask us.

Can't find yours? Ask on WhatsApp; a counsellor usually replies within working hours.

Which is the best AFCAT coaching institute in India?

No institute can honestly claim that title for every candidate. Look for coaching that matches the online paper, gives timed mocks, prepares you for the AFSB and CPSS where relevant, and states its fees clearly. Visit before you decide.

Is coaching necessary for AFCAT?

It is not required. The written paper can be practised alone with mock tests. Coaching helps most with the AFSB, where group tasks and feedback on your behaviour are hard to practise on your own.

Can girls apply for AFCAT?

Yes. The IAF invites Indian citizens, men and women, to apply through AFCAT for flying and ground duty branches, with separate vacancies listed for women.

What is the AFCAT eligibility for the flying branch?

The 02/2026 notification asks for Mathematics and Physics at 10+2 and a qualifying degree, with an age window of 20 to 24 years on 1 July 2027 (up to 26 for a DGCA Commercial Pilot Licence holder).

How much is the AFCAT exam fee?

₹550 plus GST for the AFCAT entry in the 02/2026 notification. NCC special entry and GATE score entry candidates do not pay it.

Do you offer online AFCAT classes?

No. Our coaching is held in person at our Dehradun campus.
