What is Army Agniveer coaching, and who is it for?
Army Agniveer coaching prepares you for the Indian Army’s soldier entries under the Agnipath scheme: General Duty, Technical, Clerk and Store Keeper Technical, and Tradesman. At GS India Defence Academy in Dehradun it is a residential classroom batch for students who have passed, or are about to pass, Class 8, Class 10 or Class 12 and want to serve as a soldier rather than wait for a degree. Selection is made by the Army alone, on merit.
The course suits three kinds of student. The first is a Class 10 or Class 12 candidate who wants a structured year for the online written test and the physical test. The second is a candidate who has already tried once and wants to see where the marks went. The third is a family outside Uttarakhand looking for a safe, supervised place to study. Dehradun is home to the Indian Military Academy, and many families choose the city for that atmosphere. If you are still comparing forces, our combined Agniveer course page sets all four side by side.
Army Agniveer eligibility: education and age
Eligibility depends on the trade. The table below is taken from the Army’s Agnipath rally notification for 2022-23, the most recent complete Army notification we could read in full. The Army revises marks and date-of-birth rules from cycle to cycle, so read the notice of your own year before you apply.
| Category | Education asked for (2022-23 notice) | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Agniveer General Duty | Class 10 or matriculation pass | 45% aggregate and 33% in each subject |
| Agniveer Technical | Class 12 Science with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English (or a listed ITI route) | 50% aggregate and 40% in each subject for the first option |
| Clerk / Store Keeper Technical | Class 12 in any stream | 60% aggregate and at least 50% in each subject; 50% in English and in Mathematics, Accounts or Book Keeping |
| Tradesman, 10th pass | Class 10 simple pass | At least 33% in each subject |
| Tradesman, 8th pass | Class 8 simple pass | At least 33% in each subject |
On age, the Army’s Agnipath brochure states 17½ to 21 years. The 2022-23 notice raised the upper age to 23 as a one-time measure for that year and printed an exact date-of-birth block, so your date of birth against the block in the current notice is what counts, not your age on a particular day.
Army Agniveer exam pattern: the online CEE
The Army tests candidates in an online Common Entrance Examination (CEE), held category by category. The Army’s 2026 schedule ran the CEE from 1 to 12 June, with General Duty and Tradesmen (10th) on 1 and 2 June and the remaining categories on later dates. For recruiting year 2025-26 the Army said the CEE would be held in 13 languages and that candidates could apply for any two categories they were eligible for.
| Point | What the Army documents say |
|---|---|
| Mode | Online CEE; a typing test was added for Office Assistant and Store Keeper Technical (PIB, February 2024) |
| Negative marking | Applicable (2022-23 notification) |
| Maximum marks | 200 for General Duty, for Clerk, Store Keeper and Technical, and for Tradesman (2022-23 bonus-marks table) |
| Bonus marks | For sportspersons, NCC certificate holders, and ITI and diploma holders, with a ceiling on the total |
The number of questions, the size of the penalty and the subject split are printed in each year’s notice and on the admit card, and we do not quote numbers we cannot trace to them. Our guide to the Army CEE pattern explains what to note when the admit card goes live.
Selection stages and the physical test
A PIB release of 13 July 2026 described the present order: the online CEE first, then, for shortlisted candidates, the Physical Fitness Test, the Physical Measurement Test, other physical events and the medical examination, with documents checked at the rally. In the 2022-23 notification the order was the reverse, so ignore older guides that put the rally first. Recruitment is on a merit list and depends on vacancies; qualifying gives no right to enrolment.
| Physical Fitness Test (2022-23 notice) | Standard | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| 1.6 km run, Group I | Up to 5 min 30 sec | 60 |
| 1.6 km run, Group II | 5 min 31 sec to 5 min 45 sec | 48 |
| Pull-ups | 10 / 9 / 8 / 7 / 6 | 40 / 33 / 27 / 21 / 16 |
| 9-foot ditch and zig-zag balance | Qualify | No marks |
Technical and Clerk/Store Keeper Technical candidates only need to qualify in the fitness test. Height and chest standards are not printed as a table in the 2022-23 notice, so read the current one. Details of the relaxations and the medical process are in our Army physical standards guide.
How the Dehradun programme prepares you for each stage
Our Army Agniveer batch is classroom-based. There are no online classes. The preparation follows the stages above, in general terms:
- The written test. Class-level revision of the subjects your category tests, with timed practice on a screen because the CEE is online, and review of every mistake.
- Choosing the right trade. Counselling on which category your marks support, before you register, so you do not apply for a trade you do not qualify for.
- The physical test. Guidance on training toward the 1.6 km run and pull-ups. Ask the counselling team exactly how physical preparation is organised before you enrol, so you know what you are paying for.
- Documents and the rally. A checklist of certificates to collect early, since delays in government offices are the commonest reason candidates miss a rally.
A sensible way to use the months before the CEE is to work backwards from the admit card. Early on, fix the weakest subject of your category and revise it at the level the Army asks for, which is Class 8 or Class 10 for General Duty and Tradesman and Class 11 and 12 for Technical. In the middle months, move to full timed tests on a computer, two a week, with one full day to review each test and a notebook of errors. In the last few weeks, stop adding new material, repeat only the topics that still cost you marks, and fix your travel and document plan. Because negative marking applies, learn when to leave a question, and track how many answers you get wrong in every test, not only how many you get right.

Students from outside Dehradun can stay in the academy’s separate boys’ and girls’ hostels, which have a mess. See the hostel and mess page for details, and the online admission page to begin.
