Navy Agniveer SSR and MR: Eligibility, INET Syllabus and Exam Pattern

Navy Agniveer SSR and MR eligibility, exam pattern and trades from the Navy's own pages.

The Navy’s Agniveer SSR paper has four sections, Science, Mathematics, English and General Awareness, set at Class 12 standard in 60 minutes. The MR paper has two sections, Science and Mathematics and General Awareness, at Class 10 standard in 30 minutes. SSR needs Class 12 with Mathematics and Physics at 50%, or a diploma or vocational route, MR needs matriculation at 50%, and both ask for 17½ to 22 years on the day of enrolment.

What are Agniveer SSR and MR?

The Navy’s pages use the short forms SSR and MR for its two Agniveer entries for sailors. The difference is education: SSR is for candidates who have passed Class 12 or an equivalent, MR for those who have passed Class 10. Both are four-year engagements, and selected candidates do basic training at INS Chilka followed by professional training in the trade they are allotted.

WorkServing in ships, submarines and aircraft; operating equipment such as radars, sonars and communications, or weapons such as missiles, guns and rockets.Four trades: Chef, Steward, Hygienist and Musician.

The MR trades the Navy describes are these: a Chef prepares food as per the menu and accounts for ration; a Steward serves in the officers’ messes and handles housekeeping and stores accounts; a Hygienist maintains hygiene in washrooms and other areas; and a Musician plays the instruments of the Navy’s bands. All MR sailors are also trained in firearms and take part in lookout duties, small-arms handling, and ship’s landing and boarding parties.

What is the exam pattern?

The Navy’s pages list a Stage I online examination and a Stage II written examination for these entries, a mandatory Physical Fitness Test, and vision standards. On the written paper itself, its instructions page says:

That rule matters. A candidate who scores well overall but fails one section does not pass, so a strong subject cannot rescue a neglected one.

What is the Navy SSR syllabus?

The Navy publishes the syllabus as a download on its Agniveer pages, together with practice papers, and the pages show separate links for the Stage I and the Stage II syllabus. We do not reproduce topic lists from memory, because that PDF is the only authoritative source and the Navy can change it from cycle to cycle. Treat the section names as your outline and the PDF as the checklist.

SectionHow to use it
ScienceRevise at Class 12 level. Mark every topic in the Navy’s syllabus and tick it off against your textbook.
MathematicsSSR candidates must have Mathematics in Class 12, so this is your scoring section. Practise speed on Class 11 and 12 topics.
EnglishGrammar, vocabulary and comprehension in short timed sets.
General AwarenessRead a daily newspaper and keep short notes on defence, geography, science news and current affairs.

SSR (Medical Assistant)Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, with 50% aggregate and 40% in each subject17½ to 21 years

Terms are the same for SSR and MR: enrolment under the Navy Act 1957 for four years including training, a customised package of ₹30,000 a month with a fixed yearly increment, and not more than 25% of each batch enrolled in the regular cadre. See our Agniveer salary guide for the full table. The Navy’s physical and vision standards are in our Navy Agniveer height and medical standards guide.

How should you split the 60 minutes?

The Navy does not publish a time limit for each section. It says the SSR paper is 60 minutes in all, with four sections, and that you must pass every section and the aggregate. A sensible plan is to give each section about 15 minutes in practice, then adjust after a few mock tests according to which section costs you the most time.

  • Start with the section you are strongest in, so that you bank marks early.
  • Do not spend more than a minute on any one question in the first pass.
  • Keep the last five minutes to return to marked questions.
  • Never leave a whole section weak, because a failed section fails the paper.

For MR, the paper is 30 minutes with only two sections, so speed with basic arithmetic and clear reading of general science questions are the main skills. The Navy sets this paper at Class 10 standard.

Keep your original certificates ready too. The Navy says that candidates awaiting results must produce the original marksheet at Stage II, and an internet copy is not accepted.
