The Coast Guard Navik written test is a computer-based paper of 100 multiple-choice questions, one mark each, to be solved in one hour in Hindi or English, with no negative marking. The passing mark is 40 for UR, EWS and OBC candidates and 35 for SC and ST candidates. The topic list itself is not printed in the notice; it sits in an information brochure that the notice points to, so this guide keeps what is confirmed apart from what you must read yourself.
GS India Defence Academy is a private coaching academy and has no link with the Coast Guard or the Staff Selection Commission. Where a prep website and the notice disagree, follow the notice and your candidate dashboard.

One hour for 100 questions leaves about 36 seconds a question, which is the number to practise against. Stage I is planned for early to mid November 2026, so someone who applies on the last day of the window, 21 October, has roughly three to four weeks.
Is there negative marking in the Coast Guard Navik exam?
No. The 2027 notice says wrong answers carry no negative marking, and the Coast Guard’s FAQ repeats it in answer to a direct question. Some older coaching notes and video thumbnails quote a penalty from earlier cycles, so treat any quarter-mark rule you read online as out of date unless the current notice says it. Because a wrong answer costs nothing, an unattempted question can never help you; mark every question before time runs out.
Where is the detailed Navik syllabus published?
The notice says the detailed syllabus is available on the portal, and the Coast Guard’s FAQ says the syllabus for each post and the pattern of the computer-based exam are in the information brochure under the CGEPT tab on the Staff Selection Commission website. The words “for each post” matter: Navik (GD), Navik (DB) and Yantrik are different entries with different qualifying levels, so do not assume the three papers are identical.
We could not open the brochure while writing this guide, so we do not print a topic list. Several prep sites publish one. Until you have matched their headings to the brochure, treat them as guesses. A reliable way to build your own study sheet is below.
- Open the CGEPT section on the Staff Selection Commission website and download the information brochure.
- Find the part that names your post, Navik (GD), Navik (DB) or Yantrik.
- Copy every heading into a table with three columns: topic, the class level it belongs to, and your confidence from 1 to 5.
- Attach one timed practice set to each heading, and review the errors in a separate notebook.
- Redo the full table a week before the exam and keep only the rows still below 4.
What level should Navik GD, DB and Yantrik aspirants prepare at?
The qualifying conditions tell you where the entry sits: Class 12 with Mathematics and Physics for Navik (GD), Class 10 for Navik (DB), and Class 10 plus an approved diploma for Yantrik. Our eligibility guide has the full table. A student who passed Class 12 two years ago should spend the first week refreshing Mathematics and Physics from the textbook before touching any practice book, while a Class 10 candidate should spend that week on arithmetic speed and reading comprehension.

How can you split the weeks between the window closing and Stage I?
The notice puts Stage I in early to mid November 2026, so the time after 21 October is short. One way to use roughly four weeks is below. It is a planning idea of ours, not a Coast Guard instruction, so adjust it to your own marks and the brochure.
| Week | Focus | Output you should have |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Read the brochure for your post, fill the topic table and refresh the weakest class-level topics | A completed topic table with confidence scores |
| 2 | Topic-wise practice with a stopwatch, in Hindi and English if you plan to use both | An error log with at least 40 entries |
| 3 | Three full one-hour sets, with a review day after each | A time-per-question number you can repeat |
| 4 | Two full sets, fitness practice for the run and exercises, and document checks | Admit card, ID and photographs packed |
How does the written score count towards selection?
Passing is not selection. The Coast Guard shortlists for Stage II by cut-off and by the handling capacity of its recruitment centres, so a candidate above the passing mark can still miss the call. Final merit is made from Stage I marks, provided the candidate qualifies in every part of Stage II. Men applying for Navik (GD) are ranked within their zone, while women applying for Navik (GD), and candidates for Yantrik, Navik (DB) and Hygienist-I, are ranked on an all-India basis.
When two candidates have the same Stage I marks, the older candidate ranks higher. If they were also born on the same day, the candidate with the higher Stage II assessment test mark ranks higher. The assessment test marks are used for nothing else. Holding an NCC C certificate gives no waiver from the written test and no extra marks, according to the Coast Guard’s FAQ.
What does Stage II test beyond the written paper?
| Part of Stage II | What happens |
|---|---|
| Identity and biometric check | Checked at the gate and again at the centre |
| Physical fitness test | 1.6 km run, squats, push-ups and bent-knee sit-ups, done without a break |
| Assessment and adaptability test | An online or OMR examination that is qualifying only; the result is announced at the venue |
| Document verification | Pass or fail, against the details in your application |
| Recruitment medical | A fit or unfit decision; appeals go to a designated military hospital within 14 days |
The physical standards are 6 minutes 30 seconds for the run, 20 squats, 15 push-ups and 15 bent-knee sit-ups for men, and 8 minutes, 15 squats, 10 push-ups and 10 sit-ups for women. Because the assessment test is on OMR or on screen, spend a few practice sessions filling an answer sheet under time pressure so that the format is not new on the day.
How should you practise for a 100-question, one-hour paper?
- Take a full timed set every third day and a half-length set on the days between, so that stamina and accuracy both improve.
- Make a first pass for the questions you can finish in under 30 seconds, then return to the rest. One hour is too short to stay stuck on a single item.
- Practise in both languages if you are comfortable with them, because the paper is bilingual and a confusing translation is a common time sink.
- Keep an error log with four columns: topic, why you lost the mark, the fix, and the date you re-tested it.
- Stop new material four days before the exam. Use that time for the log and for sleep.

Ask on WhatsAppHow many questions come in the Coast Guard Navik exam?

What are the passing marks for Navik?
Passing marks are 40 for UR, EWS and OBC candidates and 35 for SC and ST candidates. Passing alone does not assure a call for Stage II, because shortlisting depends on cut-offs and centre capacity.
Is the Navik exam in Hindi?
The question paper is bilingual, in Hindi and English.
Is there a separate paper for Yantrik?
The notice describes one pattern and one set of passing marks for all posts, and the Coast Guard's FAQ says the syllabus for each post is in the information brochure. Read the Yantrik portion of the brochure before you plan.
Do NCC certificate holders get extra marks in the Navik test?
No. The Coast Guard's FAQ says there is no waiver of the written examination and no additional marks for an NCC C certificate.
When is the Coast Guard Navik exam?
The notice gives early to mid November 2026 for Stage I as a tentative period. Your e-admit card on the candidate dashboard carries the confirmed date and city.
