The Army’s Agniveer physical test has two parts at a recruitment rally: the Physical Fitness Test, which scores your 1.6 km run and pull-ups and asks you to qualify in a 9-foot ditch and a zig-zag balance, and the Physical Measurement Test, followed by a medical. The notice fixes height and chest standards each year, so confirm your numbers there. This page gives the scoring and the relaxations the Army has published.
How is the Army’s Physical Fitness Test scored?
| Test | Standard | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| 1.6 km run, Group I | Up to 5 min 30 sec | 60 |
| 1.6 km run, Group II | 5 min 31 sec to 5 min 45 sec | 48 |
| Pull-ups (beam) | 10 | 40 |
| Pull-ups (beam) | 9 | 33 |
| Pull-ups (beam) | 8 | 27 |
| Pull-ups (beam) | 7 | 21 |
| Pull-ups (beam) | 6 | 16 |
| 9-foot ditch and zig-zag balance | Need to qualify | No marks |
The same table has two notes. Candidates for Agniveer Technical and for Clerk and Store Keeper Technical only need to qualify in the fitness test, not to score in it. And for the run in hilly terrain, the notice adds 30 seconds to all timings between 5,000 and 9,000 feet, and 120 seconds between 9,000 and 12,000 feet. These figures are from the Army’s Agnipath rally notification for 2022-23, the most recent complete Army notification we could read in full. The Army revises dates, age and marks rules from cycle to cycle, so read the notice of your own year before you apply.
What about height, chest and weight?
The 2022-23 notice does not print a height table. It says physical standards and special physical standards are “as per policy in vogue”, and that measurements are taken at the rally. We therefore do not quote a height for each region, because a figure from a forum can be out of date or wrong for your district. What the notice does publish are the relaxations.
| Category | Height | Chest | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Son of serviceman or ex-serviceman, war widow, or widow of ex-serviceman; adopted son or son-in-law of a war widow without a son, and legally adopted son of a serving soldier or ex-serviceman | 2 cm | 1 cm | 2 kg |
| Outstanding sportsman (national or state level, or district, college, school, university or board championship) | 2 cm | 3 cm | 5 kg |
A candidate can receive the relaxation in all three measurements. Relaxation is either for wards of servicemen and ex-servicemen or for sportsmen, not both, and it is in addition to the special physical standards.
If you are from Uttarakhand, note how the other services treat hill regions. The Navy’s published minimum is 157 cm for men and women, with 152 cm for Garhwali, Kumaoni and Uttarakhand candidates. The Air Force accepts 147 cm for women from hilly regions of Uttarakhand against 152 cm for others. The Army’s notice sets its own standards, so read it.
How does the medical examination work?
After the rally tests, candidates are examined against the medical standards laid down for the category. In the 2022-23 notice, candidates declared unfit could be referred to a Military Hospital for a specialist review: they had to report within 5 days of the referral, and the review had to be completed within 14 days. Do not leave medical problems until the rally. The Air Force and Navy notices show how detailed the checks can be, including dental points, hearing, colour vision and rules on eye surgery, and the Army’s checks are no less serious.

What does a beginner’s plan for 12 weeks look like?
This is general training advice, not a medical opinion. See a doctor before you start if you have any health concern, and stop if you feel pain.
| Weeks | Running | Pull-ups and strength |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | Three days a week: alternate one minute of jogging with one minute of walking for 20 minutes, adding a minute of jogging each week. | Hangs from a bar, slow lowering from the top, and push-ups, squats and sit-ups in small sets. |
| 5 to 8 | Three to four days: one continuous easy run building towards 1.6 km, plus one day of short fast repeats of 200 to 400 metres. | Assisted or negative pull-ups, aiming to add one repetition every week. |
| 9 to 12 | Time a full 1.6 km once a week, compare it with the group timings above, and keep one easy run. | Full sets at the test standard, then the whole test in sequence. |
Whichever batch you join, ask exactly how the physical work is organised and where it is done, so that you know what you are paying for.
