What are Navy Agniveer SSR and MR, and who are they for?
Navy SSR and MR are the Indian Navy’s two Agniveer entries for sailors. SSR (Senior Secondary Recruit) is for candidates who have passed Class 12; MR (Matric Recruit) is for those who have passed Class 10. Our Navy SSR and MR coaching in Dehradun is a residential classroom batch built around the Navy’s written paper and its mandatory physical fitness test.
SSR sailors serve in ships, submarines and aircraft and operate equipment such as radars, sonars and communications. MR is limited to four trades the Navy describes: Chef, Steward, Hygienist and Musician. The batch fits a Class 10 or Class 12 student who is drawn to the sea, a repeat applicant who needs a clearer plan, or a family from another state that wants supervised study away from home. If you are comparing forces, start with our all-forces Agniveer page.
How do you choose between the two? Start from your marksheet, not your preference. If you hold Class 12 with Mathematics and Physics at 50% or more, SSR is open to you and its paper is pitched at Class 12, which means a longer, harder test but a wider range of work. If you hold only Class 10, MR is the route, and the paper is shorter at Class 10 level. A Class 12 student who did not take Mathematics and Physics does not meet the SSR education condition as the Navy states it, and should look at other entries or at the Air Force Other-than-Science stream. We would rather tell you that in a counselling call than after you have paid a fee.
Navy SSR and MR eligibility
The figures below are from the Navy’s Agniveer SSR and MR pages on joinindiannavy.gov.in. Read the current advertisement before you apply, because the Navy can revise conditions between cycles.
| Agniveer SSR | Agniveer MR | |
|---|---|---|
| Education | Class 12 with Mathematics and Physics, at least 50% aggregate; or a three-year Engineering diploma with 50%; or a two-year vocational course with Physics and Mathematics with 50% | Matriculation from a recognised board with at least 50% aggregate |
| Age | 17½ to 22 years on the day of enrolment | 17½ to 22 years on the day of enrolment |
| Result awaited | Can apply, but selected only if the original marksheet is produced at Stage II with the minimum marks; an internet copy is not accepted | Same rule for candidates awaiting Class 10 results |
The Navy lists further entries, such as Agniveer Apprentice and SSR (Medical Assistant), with their own education and age rules. Those are not covered by this batch; check the Navy pages for them.
Navy SSR and MR exam pattern
The Navy’s written examination instructions describe an objective, bilingual paper (Hindi and English). The two entries differ in length and level:
| Agniveer SSR | Agniveer MR | |
|---|---|---|
| Sections | Four: Science, Mathematics, English, General Awareness | Two: Science and Mathematics, and General Awareness |
| Standard | Class 12 level | Class 10 level |
| Duration | 60 minutes | 30 minutes |
| Passing rule | Pass in every section and in aggregate | Pass in every section and in aggregate |
The pass-in-every-section rule is the one that catches candidates out. A high score in Mathematics cannot rescue a failed English section, so even a strong student needs balanced preparation. The Navy publishes the syllabus as a download on its Agniveer pages, and we do not reproduce topic lists from memory; use the Navy’s file as your checklist. Our SSR and MR syllabus guide walks through it.
Physical test, vision standards and selection
Qualifying in the Physical Fitness Test is mandatory. The Navy fixes these standards:
| 1.6 km run | Squats | Push-ups | Bent-knee sit-ups | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Male | 6 min 30 sec | 20 | 15 | 15 |
| Female | 8 min | 15 | 10 | 10 |
Minimum height is 157 cm for men and women, with 152 cm listed for Garhwali, Kumaoni and Uttarakhand candidates holding the domicile of the specified areas, so carry a valid domicile certificate. Vision is stricter than many families expect: 6/12 uncorrected in each eye, correctable to 6/6, with colour perception II. The Navy also sets out conditions under which candidates who have had LASIK, PRK or SMILE can be considered fit, and says radial keratotomy and phakic lenses are permanently unfit. Have your eyes checked by a specialist before planning a year around this entry. Full tables are in our Navy physical and medical standards guide.
The Navy’s terms for SSR and MR are enrolment under the Navy Act 1957 for four years including training, basic training at INS Chilka, a customised package of ₹30,000 a month with a fixed yearly increment, and not more than 25% of each batch enrolled in the regular cadre. See the salary guide for the table.
Documents matter as much as marks. The Navy says candidates awaiting results must produce the original marksheet at Stage II, and domicile relaxation on height is lost without a valid domicile certificate. Collect your originals, keep photocopies, and check names and dates of birth across every certificate before the application window opens, because mismatches are hard to correct later. Selection is by the Navy through its own stages, and no coaching centre can alter that.
How the Dehradun programme prepares you
The batch is classroom-based, and there are no online classes. In general terms it works through the same elements the Navy tests:
- Section-wise revision. Science, Mathematics, English and General Awareness for SSR; Science and Mathematics plus General Awareness for MR, at the level the Navy states.
- Timed papers. Practice in the Navy’s format so that no single section pulls you below the pass mark.
- Physical test planning. Guidance on building towards the 1.6 km run and the three exercises, which are done as a set. Ask the counselling team how physical preparation is organised before you enrol.
- Medical readiness. Early advice on eyesight, domicile and document points, so you learn about a problem now and not at the medical.
A practical rule: do not wait for the notification before you start. Class-level Science and Mathematics take months to rebuild, and SSR candidates have a Class 12 syllabus to revise alongside a running plan. Pick one weekly full test, review it the next day, and keep a record of marks per section, because the pass-in-every-section rule means your weakest section decides your result. Call or WhatsApp +91 70170 31757 for free counselling, and bring your marksheets so we can tell you honestly whether SSR or MR fits. We do not promise selection; the Navy decides.
