What are Air Force X and Y group, and who is the batch for?

X group and Y group are the names aspirants use for the two streams of the Indian Air Force’s Agniveervayu entry. X group is the Science Subjects stream and Y group is the Other than Science Subjects stream. The Air Force’s own advertisement does not use the letters; it uses the stream names, abbreviated SS and OS, with BS for candidates who sit both. Our Air Force X and Y group coaching in Dehradun is a residential classroom batch for Class 12 students and passed-outs who want to be airmen.

The batch suits a Class 12 Science student with Mathematics, Physics and English who is aiming for X group, and a Class 12 student from Arts, Commerce or any other stream who is aiming for Y group. It also suits candidates who plan to sit both papers. Because the Air Force normalises marks across test shifts and shortlists state by state, steady preparation matters more than last-minute cramming. If you want to compare all four forces first, see our all-forces Agniveer page.

Air Force X and Y group eligibility

The figures here are from the Air Force’s advertisement for Agniveervayu Intake 02/2027. Every Air Force rule belongs to an intake, so never rely on a rule without its intake number.

X group (Science Subjects)Y group (Other than Science)
EducationClass 12 with Mathematics, Physics and English, 50% aggregate and 50% in English; or a three-year diploma in listed Engineering streams, or a two-year vocational course with Physics and Mathematics, with the same marksClass 12 or equivalent in any stream, 50% aggregate and 50% in English; or a two-year vocational course
Date of birth (Intake 02/2027)1 July 2005 to 1 January 20101 July 2005 to 1 January 2010
Age at enrolmentNot above 22 yearsNot above 22 years

Marks are counted before the decimal point: the Air Force’s example is that 49.99% is taken as 49%, not rounded up to 50%. The minimum age is 17½ years, and the advertisement states no age relaxation for graduates or postgraduates. Dates and age blocks changed between Intake 01/2027 and 02/2027, so check the intake you are applying for. Our Air Force eligibility guide compares the two intakes.

Air Force X and Y group exam pattern

The Phase I online test is objective and bilingual, except the English paper. These counts come from the candidate instructions on the Air Force recruitment portal:

StreamSubjects and questionsTotal
X group (Science Subjects)Physics 25, Mathematics 25, English 2070 questions, 60 minutes
Y group (Other than Science)English 20, Reasoning and General Awareness 3050 questions, 45 minutes
Both (BS)All four subjects85 minutes

A correct answer earns one mark, an unattempted question nothing, and a wrong answer loses 0.25. Physics, Mathematics and English follow the CBSE Class 12 syllabus as the advertisement states. Marks are normalised across shifts, and shortlisting for the next phase is state-wise, so cut-offs can differ between states. Some websites quote different question counts; the portal is the source to trust. Details are in our X and Y group pattern guide.

For a sense of how quickly the calendar moves, compare the two intakes the Air Force has published. Intake 01/2027 had its online exam on 30 and 31 March 2026, and Intake 02/2027 had registration from 6 to 26 July 2026 and its online exam on 22 and 23 September 2026. After each exam the Air Force opens an objection window where candidates can see the question paper and provisional answer key. For Intake 02/2027 that ran from 26 to 28 September 2026. The lesson for a student is simple: the gap between registration and the exam is only a few weeks, so the real preparation has to be done before the advertisement appears.

Choosing between the streams is a marks decision. A candidate with Mathematics, Physics and English at the required level can sit the X group paper, and may also choose to sit both papers in one sitting, which takes 85 minutes. A candidate without Science can only look at Y group, where Reasoning and General Awareness carries 30 of the 50 questions. Awareness is mostly steady reading, so start early and keep short notes, while Reasoning improves with daily timed sets. Whichever route you choose, practise the format the portal describes: each subject has its own time limit, the sections appear in sequence, and the submit button stays disabled for the first five minutes of each section.

Selection stages and the physical test

PhaseWhat happens (Intake 02/2027 advertisement)
Phase IOnline test in the stream or streams you chose
Phase IIPhysical Fitness Test at the Airmen Selection Centre: 1.6 km run within 7 minutes for men and 8 minutes for women, then push-ups, sit-ups and squats; then Adaptability Test I (written) and Adaptability Test II
Phase IIIMedical examination by an Air Force medical team, with an Appeal Medical Board for candidates declared unfit

The advertisement sets minimum height at 152 cm for men and women, with 147 cm for women from hilly regions of Uttarakhand who hold the right domicile endorsement. Vision must be 6/12 in each eye correctable to 6/6, and a history of LASIK or PRK is not accepted. Dental standards, hearing and a tattoo rule also apply. The medical board decides fitness conclusively, so check the whole list in the advertisement early.

How the Dehradun programme prepares you

The batch is classroom-based, with no online classes. In general terms it follows the Air Force’s structure:

  • Subject classes. Physics, Mathematics and English at Class 12 level for X group; English, reasoning and general awareness for Y group.
  • Test technique. Timed practice in the per-subject format, because each subject has its own time and you cannot return to a subject once it ends. Practice also covers when to skip, since each wrong answer costs 0.25.
  • Stream choice. Counselling on whether X group, Y group or both suits your marks.
  • Physical test. Guidance on building toward the 1.6 km run and the three exercises. Ask the counselling team how physical preparation is organised before you enrol.
