The Navy’s Service Selection Board in the Kolkata region is at Diamond Harbour, in South 24 Parganas, about 55 km from central Kolkata on the bank of the Hooghly. The Navy’s Instructions for SSB print its address as SSB (Kolkata), Chhota Nadir Road, Down Town, Diamond Harbour, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal 743331. This guide covers how the Navy tells candidates to report there, what to carry and what the Government’s own announcement says about the board, and it leaves out anything that only a call-up letter can tell you.

GS India Defence Academy is a private coaching academy in Dehradun. It is not part of the Navy and has no link with any selection board. Your call-up letter is the instruction that binds you, and this guide is only a reading aid.

What is the Navy SSB at Diamond Harbour?

The Press Information Bureau announced the board on 14 May 2019, when the Chief of the Naval Staff inaugurated what it called the Navy’s first full-fledged Service Selection Board at Diamond Harbour. The release said it was the fifth Navy board and that it selects both Permanent Commission and Short Service Commission officers. The facts it gives are worth keeping together.

Address and contact as the Navy prints them

DetailOn the Navy’s Instructions for SSB page
BoardSSB (Kolkata)
Postal addressChhota Nadir Road, Down Town, Diamond Harbour, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal 743331
Call-up officeTelephone numbers and a call-up email address are printed on the page. We have not copied them because they can change; use the ones on the page or on your letter

The page gives a general query address for the Navy’s officer entries as well. For anything about your own date, write to the call-up office of this board, not to a general mailbox.

How do you report at SSB Kolkata?

The Navy’s rule is the same for all its boards. Candidates report at the railway station named in the call-up letter at the date and time in it. A representative of the SSB is present at the station for reception. If you face difficulty, you contact the Movement Control Officer of Kolkata railway station, which the Navy’s page names as the helper for this board.

We do not name a particular station or train route in this guide. The Navy’s page says only that the reporting station is the one in your letter, and a route that works for one batch may not apply to yours. Before you book, read the letter, then check timetables for that station on the railways’ official enquiry system and allow a margin for a late train.

  1. Note the reporting station, date and hour from the letter.
  2. Plan to reach Kolkata the day before. Diamond Harbour is about 55 km from central Kolkata, so allow for the onward journey after you meet the representative.
  3. Keep your printout, identity papers and originals in a single folder that you hold yourself.
  4. At the station, look for the SSB representative. Use the MCO only if you cannot find anyone.
  5. Keep all tickets for the fare claim.

What to carry

The Navy’s list is short and exact. Read your letter for anything it adds.

  • A printout of the call-up letter.
  • Original matriculation certificate and original B.E. or B.Tech degree certificate and mark sheet, where the entry is a graduate one. For the 10+2 B.Tech entry, the January 2027 advertisement asks for a printout of your application and the original certificates, including the JEE Main score card, Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets and proof of date of birth.
  • Ten passport-size photographs, not attested.
  • One pair of white PT shoes, and two pairs each of white socks, white shorts and white T-shirts, plus two pairs of formal trousers and shirts in sober colours.
  • A risk certificate signed by a parent or guardian, stating that the candidate attends the SSB with the parent’s or guardian’s consent and at his or her own risk.

If you are appearing for the first time for a particular type of commission, the Navy refunds the to-and-fro 3-tier rail fare on production of tickets. The advertisement for the 10+2 B.Tech entry also asks you to bring a photocopy of the first page of your passbook or a cheque leaf, so that the refund can be paid.

Changing your date, or the board

Dates can be changed only in exceptional cases, by the call-up officer of the board concerned. Changing the venue is not allowed at all. The Navy’s 10+2 B.Tech advertisement repeats the point for that entry: change of SSB centre is not permissible under any circumstances. A Kolkata call-up cannot be swapped for a Bhopal or Visakhapatnam one. If you are unable to attend, say so in writing at once.

Who is called to Kolkata?

The Navy does not say how it divides candidates between its boards. It lists the cities: for the 10+2 (B.Tech) Cadet Entry of January 2027 the SSBs were in Bengaluru, Bhopal, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam from September 2026, and for graduate Short Service Commission entries after the INET the SSBs are at Bangalore, Bhopal, Visakhapatnam and Kolkata, with pilot and Naval Air Operations candidates at Bangalore. Your letter shows which city you have been allotted.

At every Navy board the SSB runs in two stages. Stage I has an intelligence test and the picture perception and discussion test. Stage II has psychological testing, group testing and the interview. Candidates who are recommended go for a medical examination of about three to five days, described in our guide to the SSB medical examination. If you are an applicant to the Navy’s technical entry, our guide to the Navy 10+2 B.Tech entry covers eligibility and selection.

The 2019 release says the board was set up partly to shorten the journey for candidates from the northern and north-eastern parts of the country, but your own allotment is decided by the Navy.
