SSB Coimbatore refers to the Indian Navy’s Naval Selection Board at Coimbatore. A 2019 Government press release counted Coimbatore among five Navy selection boards. The Navy’s current pages on SSB, however, name only four cities, Bangalore, Bhopal, Visakhapatnam and Kolkata, and its latest 10+2 B.Tech advertisement does the same. If your call-up letter says Coimbatore, follow the letter. If you are only planning, do not assume that you will be called there. This guide sets out what each official source says and what to do in either case.
GS India Defence Academy is a private coaching academy in Dehradun. It is not part of the Navy and has no connection with any selection board. Nothing here is an official instruction, and your call-up letter overrides every guide.
What do the official sources say about a Coimbatore board?
| Official source | Boards or cities it names |
|---|---|
| Press Information Bureau release of 14 May 2019, on the Kolkata SSB | Kolkata as the fifth Navy board; the others are in Bhopal, Bengaluru, Visakhapatnam and Coimbatore |
| Join Indian Navy, Instructions for SSB (checked October 2026) | Call-up offices for 12 SSB Bangalore, 33 SSB Bhopal, NSB Visakhapatnam and SSB Kolkata. No Coimbatore entry |
| Join Indian Navy, officer selection procedure (checked October 2026) | For the INET route, Bangalore for pilot and Naval Air Operations candidates, and Bangalore, Bhopal, Visakhapatnam and Kolkata for other branches |
| Navy advertisement, 10+2 (B.Tech) Cadet Entry, January 2027 course | SSB interviews at Bengaluru, Bhopal, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam from September 2026 |
Taken together, the 2019 release shows that Coimbatore was a Navy board, and the 2026 pages show that the Navy no longer lists it among the cities used for current call-ups. We could not find any official page that explains the change, and we are not claiming that the board has closed. What we can say is that no current Navy page we could open gives a Coimbatore address, call-up office or reporting instruction.
Where does INS Agrani come in?
INS Agrani is the Navy’s leadership training establishment at Red Fields, Coimbatore 641018. Its page on the Navy’s website, an older page, gives the address, says the airport is about 13 km from the establishment, names Coimbatore as the nearest railway station and mentions buses and taxis. Many candidate websites place the Naval Selection Board inside INS Agrani and quote a postal address for it. We could not confirm that from a current Navy page, so we do not repeat any board address or telephone number.
This is also why a wrong turn here is expensive. Candidates are received at the point and time written in their call-up letter, so arriving at a place you have only read about on a website helps no one.
If your call-up letter says Coimbatore
Then the board is operating for your batch, and the Navy’s general SSB instructions apply to you in the same way as they do at the other boards.
- Report at the railway station named in your call-up letter, on the date and at the time given. The Navy says a representative of the SSB is at the station for reception.
- The Navy’s list of Movement Control Officers names Bhopal, Bangalore, Visakhapatnam and Kolkata stations. It does not name Coimbatore, so ask the call-up office who to approach if you cannot find the representative. The Navy’s general enquiry address is officer@navy.gov.in.
- Carry a printout of the letter, your original matriculation and degree or mark sheets, ten passport-size photographs that are not attested, white PT shoes, white socks, shorts and T-shirts, two sets of formal shirt and trousers in sober colours, and the risk certificate signed by a parent or guardian.
- Keep your tickets. The Navy refunds the to-and-fro 3-tier rail fare when you appear for the first time for a particular type of commission.
- Do not plan to change the venue. The Navy says a change of SSB dates is allowed only in exceptional cases and that a change of venue is not allowed.
If you cannot reach anyone by phone, write to the email address on your letter. Keep the reply, because a written confirmation is worth more than any website.
Which Navy entries go to an SSB, and where?
| Entry | What the Navy’s pages say about the SSB |
|---|---|
| NDA and CDSE | UPSC conducts the written examination and the Navy conducts the SSB. The Navy lists the SSB months, for example August to September after the first NDA examination of a year and January to February after the second. The city comes with your call-up |
| 10+2 (B.Tech) Cadet Entry | SSB at Bengaluru, Bhopal, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam from September 2026 for the January 2027 course. Shortlisting is by JEE Main rank |
| INET (graduate Short Service Commission) | Bangalore for pilot and Naval Air Operations; Bangalore, Bhopal, Visakhapatnam or Kolkata for other branches, after shortlisting on INET rank |
| NCC entry (Naval Wing ‘C’ certificate, B.E. or B.Tech) | No written test. Applications go to Naval Headquarters through the NCC Directorate General; candidates are then deputed for SSB, followed by a medical examination and induction on all-India merit |
Our guides to SSB Bangalore, Navy SSB Kolkata and SSB Visakhapatnam give the addresses the Navy itself publishes for those boards.
How does a Navy SSB run?
The Navy describes the SSB as two stages. Stage I has an intelligence test, the picture perception test and a discussion. Stage II has psychological testing, group testing and the interview. The assessors look for officer-like qualities such as planning and organising ability, social adaptability, social effectiveness and dynamic ability. Candidates who are recommended undergo a medical examination of about three to five days, which we explain in our guide to the SSB medical examination. For a test-by-test walk-through, read the SSB interview process.
Travel planning for any Navy board comes down to the same rule. Check train and flight timetables on official sources, book with a buffer and use the reporting point from your own letter. If you want help with the preparation side, we offer free counselling by phone or WhatsApp on +91 70170 31757.
