SSB Visakhapatnam is the Indian Navy’s Naval Selection Board, which the Navy’s Instructions for SSB list at 9-IRSD Area, next to Material Organisation, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh 530008. Candidates called there report at the railway station named in their call-up letter, where an SSB representative receives them. This guide takes the venue, the reporting rules, the kit list and the entries that use the board from the Navy’s own pages, and it leaves the exact reporting point to your letter.
GS India Defence Academy is a private coaching academy in Dehradun. It is not part of the Navy and has no link with any selection board. Your call-up letter and the advertisement for your entry bind you, and this guide is a reading aid only.
Where is the Naval Selection Board at Visakhapatnam?
Few dedicated pages exist for this board, but the Navy does publish an address. Its Instructions for SSB page lists the call-up offices of its boards in a table, and the entry for Visakhapatnam reads as follows.
| Detail | On the Navy’s Instructions for SSB page |
|---|---|
| Board | NSB Visakhapatnam |
| Postal address | The President, Naval Selection Board, 9-IRSD Area, Next to Material Organisation, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh 530008 |
| Telephone | 0891-2815012 |
| Fax | 0891-2512150 |
| A call-up email address is printed on the page |
The Navy’s other pages also use the short form Vizag for the city, which is how many candidates search for it. They mean the same board. Numbers on any list can go out of date, so prefer the details printed on your letter if they differ.
How do you report at SSB Visakhapatnam?
The Navy’s rule is that candidates report at the railway station named in the call-up letter, at the time and on the date given there. A representative from the SSB is present at the station for reception. In case of difficulty, the Navy tells candidates to contact the Movement Control Officer of Visakhapatnam railway station.
We do not name the platform, gate or timing, because the Navy’s page does not, and these details belong to your batch. Treat the following as a routine.
- Read the letter for the reporting station, date and hour, and put them on the first page of your document folder.
- Book travel to arrive in the city the day before, with a buffer for a late train. Be at the station well before the reporting hour.
- Print the call-up letter and carry it with your photo identity and original certificates.
- On arrival, find the SSB representative. If you cannot, approach the MCO as the Navy advises.
- Keep every ticket, and the first page of your passbook or a cheque leaf if your entry’s advertisement asks for it.
Which entries use the Visakhapatnam board?
The Navy does not say that any entry is tied to one city. It names the cities in use for each entry, and your call-up letter allots you one of them.
| Entry | What the Navy says about the SSB cities |
|---|---|
| 10+2 (B.Tech) Cadet Entry, January 2027 course | SSB interviews at Bengaluru, Bhopal, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam from September 2026 |
| INET, graduate Short Service Commission | For branches other than pilot and Naval Air Operations, SSB at Bangalore, Bhopal, Visakhapatnam or Kolkata. Pilot and Naval Air Operations candidates are tentatively scheduled at Bangalore |
| Direct entry with preliminary scanning (musician, sports) | SSB interviews at Bangalore, Bhopal, Vizag or Kolkata for the successful candidates |
| NDA and CDSE | UPSC conducts the written examination and the Navy the SSB; the city comes with the call-up |
Visakhapatnam is not a new addition: the Government’s 2019 release on the Kolkata board already named it among the Navy’s boards. If you are comparing the four Navy cities, read our guides to SSB Bangalore and Navy SSB Kolkata.
What to carry, and what the Navy refunds
The Navy’s list, as printed on its Instructions for SSB page, asks for the following.
- Original matriculation certificate and the original B.E. or B.Tech degree certificate and mark sheet, for graduate entries. Class 12 and JEE Main papers apply to the 10+2 B.Tech entry, as the advertisement lists.
- Ten passport-size photographs, not attested.
- One pair of white PT shoes, two pairs each of white socks, white shorts and white T-shirts, and two pairs of formal trousers and shirts in sober colours.
- A printout of the call-up letter.
- A risk certificate signed by a parent or guardian, saying that the candidate attends the SSB with consent and at his or her own risk, and that the guardian cannot claim compensation from the Government for any injury during the interview.
Candidates appearing for the first time for a particular type of commission get the to-and-fro 3-tier rail fare refunded on production of tickets. A second attempt at the same kind of commission is not covered, so do not count on it.
Changing dates, and the rule on venue
The Navy permits a change of SSB dates only in exceptional cases. The request goes to the call-up officer of the board concerned, and the page asks candidates to fax their application. A change of venue is not allowed, so a Visakhapatnam call-up cannot be exchanged for Bangalore or Bhopal because it is easier for your family. If you have a clash, tell the office early and in writing.
What happens inside
The Navy’s SSB has two stages. Stage I is an intelligence test with the picture perception and discussion test. Stage II has psychological testing, group testing and the interview, in which assessors look for officer-like qualities such as planning and organising ability, social adaptability, social effectiveness and dynamic ability. Those who are recommended go for a medical examination of about three to five days. Our guides to the SSB interview process and the SSB medical examination cover both parts.
Preparation is the same whichever city you are sent to. Practise timed Stage I papers, rehearse group tasks with friends, and be ready to talk about every line you wrote in your personal information form. We offer free counselling by phone or WhatsApp on +91 70170 31757 if you would like to plan the weeks before your date.
