The Indian Navy’s 10+2 (B.Tech) Cadet Entry Scheme takes unmarried men and women who have passed Class 12 with at least 70% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and at least 50% in English, shortlists them on their JEE Main rank, tests them at a Services Selection Board and, for those who are recommended and medically fit, sends them to the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala for a four-year B.Tech course. There is no separate written paper. The facts below come from the Navy’s own advertisement for the January 2027 course and from its selection and medical pages.
GS India Defence Academy is a private coaching academy in Dehradun, not part of the Navy. Each Navy advertisement is binding for its own course, and this guide is only a reading aid. If a date or figure here differs from the advertisement you hold, follow the advertisement.
What does the January 2027 advertisement say?
| Point | As stated in the Navy’s advertisement |
|---|---|
| Entry | 10+2 (B.Tech) Cadet Entry Scheme, Permanent Commission, Technical branches |
| Course starts | January 2027 |
| Who may apply | Unmarried men and women who are Indian citizens as defined by the Government of India |
| Vacancies | Mechanical Engineering 30 and Electronics and Communication Engineering 30, for men and women. A maximum of 8 vacancies for women, 4 in each branch. Vacancies are tentative |
| Birth window | Born between 2 July 2007 and 1 January 2010, both dates inclusive |
| Qualification | 10+2 or equivalent from a recognised board with at least 70% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and at least 50% in English in Class 10 or Class 12 |
| Examination required | Candidates must have appeared in JEE (Main) 2026. SSB call-ups follow the JEE (Main) All India Common Rank List published by the NTA |
| Application window | Opened 29 May 2026; the advertisement gave 18 June 2026 as the last date, and the Navy’s site later showed an extension to 29 June 2026. The window is now closed |
| SSB cities | Bengaluru, Bhopal, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam, from September 2026 |
| Training | Four-year B.Tech at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, with the degree awarded by Jawaharlal Nehru University |
The birth window works out to roughly 17 to 19½ years on 1 January 2027, but do not rely on that arithmetic. Each advertisement fixes its own window, and the course you apply for may use different dates.
Who is eligible, and what has to be true on the day?
Three conditions matter most. First, the marks: 70% in the three science subjects taken together and 50% in English, where English can be counted from either Class 10 or Class 12. Second, JEE Main: the Navy has made a JEE (Main) rank compulsory for this entry since January 2017, and the rank stays valid for one year from the date of declaration. Third, marital status: only unmarried candidates are eligible for training. A candidate who is found to be married, or who marries during training, is discharged and is liable to refund the full cost, including pay and allowances.
Women can apply. The advertisement caps women’s vacancies at eight across the two branches, four in each. Use of narcotics is banned, and candidates can be tested during the SSB, the medical examination and later in service.
How does JEE Main fit into the Navy’s selection?
The Navy does not conduct its own written test for this entry. Naval Headquarters fixes a cut-off on the JEE (Main) All India Common Rank List and calls the candidates above it to the SSB. You fill in your Common Rank List rank in the application, and you attach the JEE (Main) score card with your date-of-birth proof, the Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets and a recent photograph. If any scanned document is unreadable, the application is rejected, and a submitted application cannot be amended.
Everything after that depends on the SSB. Your JEE Main preparation therefore has a clear job, which is to get you the call. Your SSB preparation has a different job, which is to turn the call into a recommendation. Our programme for this entry is SSB preparation only. We do not teach JEE Main, and you should keep that preparation with your school or tutor.
Where and how is the SSB held?
Shortlisted candidates are told by email and SMS and download the call-up letter from the Navy’s site. The advertisement states that a change of SSB centre is not permissible under any circumstances. Requests to change SSB dates go to the call-up officer of the board concerned. The Navy refunds AC 3-tier rail fare for a candidate appearing for the first time for a particular type of commission, so carry a photocopy of the first page of your passbook or a cheque leaf showing your name, account number and IFSC. Our guides to the Navy boards at Kolkata and Visakhapatnam give the addresses the Navy publishes.
The Navy describes the SSB as two stages. Stage I has an intelligence test and the picture perception and discussion test. Stage II has psychological testing, group testing and the interview. Candidates who are recommended undergo a medical examination of about three to five days. The merit list is prepared from SSB marks and medical fitness, and appointment follows police and character verification and the availability of vacancies. Being on the merit list does not create a right to appointment.
What medical standards apply?
Every candidate recommended by the SSB goes for the medical examination applicable to this entry, and the Navy states that there is no relaxation in standards on any grounds and that a change of medical hospital is not allowed. A candidate who has already been declared medically fit for NDA or the Naval Academy course of January 2027 does not repeat the examination.
The Navy’s medical page groups entries by visual standard. For 10+2 entries such as the B.Tech scheme it lists visual standard V2: uncorrected vision of 6/12 in each eye, correctable to 6/6 in each, with limits of myopia of minus 1.0 dioptre, hypermetropia of plus 2.0 dioptres and astigmatism of plus 1.0 dioptre cylinder, and colour perception grade I. It also says that candidates who have had refractive surgery such as PRK, LASIK or SMILE can be considered fit in most branches subject to conditions, including that the surgery was not before the age of 20 and was done at least 12 months before the examination. Read the page itself for the full conditions, and do not treat a school eye test as a substitute. Our guide to the SSB medical examination explains the sequence of boards and appeals.
Navy 10+2 B.Tech or Army TES?
Both entries take students after Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, both use JEE Main, and both lead to an SSB. The official pages show differences worth noting.
| Point | Navy 10+2 (B.Tech), January 2027 course | Army 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme (Army portal) |
|---|---|---|
| Class 12 marks | 70% in PCM and 50% in English | 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics |
| JEE Main | Rank on the Common Rank List decides the SSB call | Candidate must have appeared in JEE Main |
| Training | Four-year B.Tech at Ezhimala | Five years in all (one year and four years at CTWS), with OTA Gaya named as the training academy |
| Intake | 30 plus 30 vacancies in the January 2027 advertisement | 90 vacancies per course, twice a year, as listed on the portal |
Our page on Army TES and Navy technical entry coaching in Dehradun describes how our SSB preparation fits both. For the Army side in more detail, see TES entry coaching in India.
When will the next advertisement come?
The Navy’s selection page says that this entry is opened twice a year, for the spring and autumn terms, and that the advertisement is released six to eight months before the course begins. For a course starting in July, that points to an advertisement at the turn of the year. Watch the Join Indian Navy site and note that the JEE Main rank you will need is the one for the right year. For the January 2027 course it was JEE (Main) 2026. If you want help working out the timeline for your batch, we offer free counselling by phone or WhatsApp on +91 70170 31757.
