The Navy’s minimum height for Agniveer men and women is 157 cm, relaxed to 155 cm for tribals from Ladakh and the island territories, and to 152 cm for the Garhwali, Kumaoni and Uttarakhand domiciles and the other groups the Navy lists. Qualifying in the Physical Fitness Test is mandatory: a 1.6 km run in 6 minutes 30 seconds for men and 8 minutes for women, with squats, push-ups and sit-ups. Uncorrected vision must be 6/12 in each eye.

What is the Navy Agniveer height requirement?

Category (domicile of specified areas)Minimum heightIn feet and inches (approx.)
General: Agniveer male and female candidates157 cm5 ft 1¾ in
Tribals from Ladakh155 cm5 ft 1 in
Andaman and Nicobar, Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands155 cm5 ft 1 in
“Gorkhas Nepali, Assamese, Garhwali, Kumaoni and Uttarakhand”, as the Navy lists them152 cm4 ft 11¾ in
Bhutan, Sikkim and the North East Region152 cm4 ft 11¾ in

The Navy gives one height for men and women alike. The relaxation applies to candidates holding the domicile of the specified areas, so carry a valid domicile certificate. Check the Navy’s page for the current list, because relaxations can be revised.

What is the Navy Agniveer Physical Fitness Test?

Gender1.6 km runSquats (uthak baithak)Push-upsBent-knee sit-ups
Male6 min 30 sec201515
Female8 min151010

The Navy’s pages say that qualifying in the PFT is mandatory for selection. A 1.6 km run in 6 minutes 30 seconds is a pace of about 4 minutes 4 seconds per kilometre, and 8 minutes is exactly 5 minutes per kilometre. Time yourself over the whole distance rather than judging by feel.

What are the eyesight rules?

Uncorrected visionCorrected visionColour perception
6/12 in each eye6/6 in each eyeII

So the Navy’s standard is stricter about uncorrected vision than many families expect: a candidate whose uncorrected vision is worse than 6/12 in either eye does not meet the published standard. Have your eyes tested by an eye specialist before you plan a year around this entry.

Can candidates who have had LASIK or other eye surgery apply?

The Navy says candidates who have undergone keratorefractive surgery (PRK, LASIK or SMILE) can be considered fit subject to all of the following:

  • The surgery was not carried out before 20 years of age.
  • It was uncomplicated and done at least 12 months before the examination, with a certificate from the eye centre stating the type of surgery, its date and the pre-operative error of the eye.
  • Axial length of 26 mm or less, measured by IOL Master or A-scan.
  • Residual corneal thickness of not less than 450 microns, measured by pachymeter.
  • Residual refraction of +1.0 D sphere or cylinder or less, within the permissible limit for the category.
  • Pre-operative refractive error of not more than ±6.0 D.
  • A normal retinal examination.

Keratorefractive surgery is not acceptable for special cadres such as submarine, diving and MARCO. Candidates who have had radial keratotomy or a phakic intra-ocular lens are permanently unfit for all branches. Read these conditions before, not after, you decide to have surgery to meet the standard.

How do you train and prepare for these standards?

This is general advice, not a medical opinion. See a doctor before you start if you have a health concern.

How does the Navy compare with the Air Force on height and eyes?

Eye surgeryConditions apply; not acceptable for submarine, diving and MARCOHistory of LASIK or PRK is not accepted

If you are close to a height bar, compare services before you decide. Each service fixes its own standard, so a candidate who is a few centimetres short for one may meet another. Measure your height barefoot, against a flat wall, in the morning, and repeat it on two days.

The Navy’s published page covers height, the fitness test and vision. Other medical checks are done at the recruitment medical, and we do not list standards we could not trace to the Navy’s own page.

Finally, keep proof ready. The relaxations in height depend on domicile, and the surgery conditions depend on certificates from the eye centre, so collect both before the recruitment medical, not on the day. Photocopies and originals of the domicile certificate, the surgery certificate and recent eye reports save a long and stressful morning.

Parents can help most by checking facts early: measure height, book the eye test, and read the Navy’s page together with the candidate.
