The NCC Special Entry Scheme lets cadets who hold the NCC ‘C’ certificate reach an officer’s commission without sitting the general written paper, and each service runs it differently. The Army’s scheme takes graduates to the Officers Training Academy, Chennai, through an application routed via the NCC Directorate. The Navy takes Naval Wing ‘C’ certificate holders with a B.E. or B.Tech degree, and the Air Force lets Air Wing ‘C’ certificate holders go straight to the AFSB. This guide sets the three side by side from each service’s own pages, and it shows where those pages disagree.
GS India Defence Academy is a private coaching academy in Dehradun. It is not part of the NCC or any service. The notice for your course is the authority on percentages, dates and certificate conditions, and this guide only helps you read it.
The three services at a glance
| Service | Who is eligible | Written test? | Next stage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Army (OTA Chennai) | Graduates who hold the NCC ‘C’ certificate and meet the age, marks and service conditions of the notification | Not through UPSC; the scheme is a non-UPSC entry | SSB, then medical and merit |
| Navy | Naval Wing Senior Division ‘C’ certificate holders with a B.E. or B.Tech degree | No written test | SSB, then medical and induction on all-India merit |
| Air Force | Air Wing Senior Division ‘C’ certificate holders; the certificate must be recent, as explained below | Exempt from the written AFCAT | Direct call to one of the five AFSBs |
Army: what do the Army’s own pages say?
The Army’s portal has one page for men and one for women under NCC (Special) Entry. Both give an age of 19 to 25 years, an unmarried status, training at OTA Chennai for 49 weeks, and courses starting in April and October.
| Point | NCC (SPL) Entry, Men | NCC (SPL) Entry, Women |
|---|---|---|
| Birth window | Born between 2 January and 1 January for the April course; between 2 July and 1 July for the October course | Not stated on the page |
| Qualification | As per the notification of the Directorate General of Recruiting | Graduate with 65% aggregate marks; 2 or 3 years’ service (as applicable) in the NCC Senior Division Army; minimum ‘B’ grade in the ‘C’ certificate examination |
| Applications received | October/November and April/May, through the NCC Directorate | August/September and February/March |
| Likely SSB | November/December and May/June | December/January for the April course; July/August for the October course |
The Army’s FAQ page adds that vacancies for ‘C’ certificate holders are reserved for IMA through the Combined Defence Services Examination and for OTA through the NCC Special Entry Scheme, which is a non-UPSC entry whose advertisement appears in June/July and November/December.
These Army pages do not agree with one another on months or on the qualification, and the FAQ page is older than the entry tables. That is the reason why websites quote different degree percentages and different NCC years. We quote only the Army’s women’s page for the 65%, ‘B’ grade and years, and we tell you to treat the notification for your own course as final.
The UPSC route: reserved vacancies in CDS
NCC ‘C’ certificate holders can also compete through UPSC. The Combined Defence Services Examination (II) 2026 notice reserves vacancies for them: 13 of the 100 at the Indian Military Academy for Army Wing holders, 6 of the 26 at the Indian Naval Academy for Naval Wing holders, and 3 of the 32 at the Air Force Academy for Air Wing holders through NCC Special Entry. To be eligible for the reserved seats, the notice says a candidate must have served not less than three academic years in the Senior Division of the relevant NCC wing and must not have been discharged from the NCC for more than 24 months by the last date of receipt of applications. Candidates still to pass the ‘C’ certificate may apply, but they must send proof of passing by the date the notice gives.
For the Short Service Commission course at OTA through CDS, there is no reservation, so NCC holders compete as general candidates. Our CDS coaching in Dehradun page explains that written route.
Navy: B.E. or B.Tech and the Naval Wing
The Navy’s selection page describes its NCC entry briefly. Vacancies for Naval Wing Senior Division ‘C’ certificate holders with a B.E. or B.Tech degree are published along with the CDSE advertisement. No written test is conducted. Eligible candidates send their application directly to Naval Headquarters through the Directorate General NCC, are deputed for the SSB, undergo a medical examination if they qualify, and are inducted on the basis of all-India merit. Training begins in January or July. The page does not give an age or percentage, so read the advertisement for that.
Air Force: Air Wing and the direct AFSB call
The Air Force’s AFCAT 02/2026 notification is detailed. NCC Special Entry candidates must hold the NCC Air Wing Senior Division ‘C’ certificate, and the certificate must have been acquired within two years counting backwards from the AFCAT registration date. The written examination is exempt, and they are called directly to one of the AFSB centres, where they give a preference among the five boards. No application fee is charged for NCC Special Entry.
The notice also fixes shares. For the flying branch, NCC Special Entry gets 10% of the seats out of the CDSE vacancies for Permanent Commission and 10% of the AFCAT vacancies for Short Service Commission; the course list shows Permanent Commission for men and Short Service Commission for men and women. In the ground duty branches, 10% of the vacancies are reserved for NCC Air Wing Senior Division ‘C’ holders. The flying-branch age is 20 to 24 years as on the course date given in the notice. Our guides to the Air Force boards at Varanasi, Mysuru and Gandhinagar describe what happens on arrival, and the 1 AFSB Dehradun guide covers the board in our own city.
What should an NCC cadet do now?
- Find out which wing your certificate belongs to. Your service decides which of the three schemes applies.
- Ask your NCC group headquarters and unit for the current notice. For the Army and the Navy, the application goes through the NCC channel, so your unit will know the dates before most websites do.
- Read the notice for percentage, years of NCC service, grade of the certificate and the age window, and write them out in your own words.
- Check how the certificate date counts, especially for the Air Force’s two-year rule.
- Start SSB preparation early. The special entry skips the general paper, which means the board carries more weight in your selection.
We cannot tell you which service suits you, and we do not make claims about outcomes. What we can do is help with the SSB side of it: free counselling is available by phone or WhatsApp on +91 70170 31757. See also our guides to the SSB interview process and NDA, CDS and AFCAT.

FAQs
Questions parents ask us.
Can't find yours? Ask on WhatsApp; a counsellor usually replies within working hours.
Ask on WhatsAppHow many years of NCC are needed for the special entry?
It depends on the service and the notice. UPSC's CDS notice asks for not less than three academic years in the Senior Division for the reserved vacancies, while the Army's women's page says 2 or 3 years, as applicable. Read your own notice.
Is there a written exam for the NCC Special Entry Scheme?
Not for the Army scheme, which is a non-UPSC entry, nor for the Navy's NCC entry or the Air Force's NCC Special Entry, where the written AFCAT is exempt. All three lead to an SSB or AFSB.
Can girls apply through NCC Special Entry?
Yes for the Army, which has a separate women's entry. The Air Force lists Short Service Commission for men and women under NCC flying. Check the Navy's advertisement for its NCC entry.
What is the age limit for NCC Special Entry?
The Army's portal gives 19 to 25 years. The Air Force's AFCAT 02/2026 notification gives 20 to 24 years for the flying branch. The Navy's page gives no age; read the advertisement.
Which 'C' certificate does the Air Force ask for?
The NCC Air Wing Senior Division 'C' certificate, acquired within two years counting backwards from the AFCAT registration date.
Is NCC Special Entry the same as the CDS reserved vacancies?
No. The reserved vacancies come through the UPSC examination, while the Army's special entry is a separate non-UPSC scheme.
