Territorial Army Officer: Eligibility, Age, Selection for Working Professionals and Training

Who can join the Territorial Army as an officer: citizenship, age 18 to 42, graduation and gainful employment, the selection stages and what we could not verify.

A Territorial Army officer is a part-time officer: the Army’s eligibility for the non-departmental entry asks for an Indian citizen aged 18 to 42 with a graduate degree from a recognised university who is gainfully employed. So yes, you can join the Territorial Army while employed, and in fact being employed is a condition. Selection is by Service Selection Board tests, a medical board and police verification, according to the Army’s officer eligibility page.

The Army’s recruitment pages open behind a verification step that we did not bypass, and the Territorial Army website did not respond from our network on 12 October 2026. The conditions above come from the Army’s published eligibility as it was read for us, and we have left out anything we could not confirm, including current dates, vacancies and pay. Always read the latest advertisement. GS India Defence Academy is a private coaching academy and not part of the Army.

What is a Territorial Army officer?

The Territorial Army is a force of citizens who hold civil jobs and also serve as commissioned officers. That is why the entry is built around people who are already working. It is different from the regular entries such as the NDA, which takes students after Class 12, or the CDS, which takes graduates for full-time careers. A candidate who wants a full-time army career should read our guide to NDA, CDS and AFCAT rather than this one.

Who is eligible for the Territorial Army officer entry?

ConditionNon-departmental officer entryMedical officers
CitizenshipIndian citizenIndian citizen
Age18 to 42 yearsUpper age limit of 45
EducationGraduate degree from a recognised universityGraduation plus an appropriate technical qualification
EmploymentGainfully employedEmployed in specified public-sector employers

Former commissioned officers follow a separate route, with screening by an Army Headquarters selection board and a medical at the Armed Forces Clinic in New Delhi, and are given credit for earlier commissioned service. Departmental Territorial Army units, which recruit from within particular organisations, have their own conditions.

What are the selection stages?

  1. Application. Candidates apply as the advertisement directs. The 2026 notices on prep sites are not confirmed by us.
  2. Service Selection Board. The Army’s page lists tests at a Service Selection Board as the main assessment.
  3. Medical board. Successful candidates are medically examined.
  4. Police verification. The final step before selection.

Some prep sites add a computer-based written test before the board for the 2026 cycle. The Army eligibility page we could read does not describe one, so check the current advertisement for whether a written test applies in the year you apply. The board itself is what our SSB interview process guide explains, and it is the same family of tests that other officer entries use.

Can you apply while working, and what does that involve?

Yes. Because gainful employment is a condition, the advertisement and the selection board treat a working candidate as the normal case. Practical points we can offer without quoting rules we have not read: keep your employer’s details, appointment letter and recent pay proof ready, plan your leave for the board days, and tell your employer early so that you can get any documents they need to issue. Ask the advertisement or the Territorial Army unit whether a no-objection certificate is required, rather than assuming either way.

If you want to talk through whether this entry suits your job and age, call or WhatsApp +91 70170 31757 for free counselling. A counsellor can also go through the board tasks with you.

How should a working professional prepare for the board?

  • Spend your first month on the Officer Intelligence Rating basics: how the picture perception, group tasks and interview are scored in the guides you trust.
  • Practise speaking in a group once a week, with a friend or colleague who will give honest feedback.
  • Write down your own life story in order, with dates, so that the personal interview feels like a conversation, not a recital.
  • Keep a simple fitness routine, because the medical and the outdoor tasks assume a healthy adult.
  • Read the news daily for 20 minutes and form a view you can defend in three sentences.

What about training and service?

We could not read the current rules for training, embodiment and annual camps, so we do not state durations. They are in the advertisement and the Territorial Army rules. Confirm the details with the Army before you plan your leave.

What is the latest official notice?

We could not read an official Territorial Army officer notification on 12 October 2026. Prep websites report a 2026 notice with an April to May application window and a July written test, but we have not confirmed those dates, vacancies or pay, so we do not repeat them. Watch the Army’s recruitment website and the Territorial Army site, and treat third-party dates as unconfirmed.

Which documents should you keep ready?

  • Proof of Indian citizenship and date of birth, such as the Class 10 certificate and a government identity card.
  • Your graduation degree or provisional certificate and the mark sheets.
  • Employment proof: appointment letter, recent pay slips or an employer certificate.
  • Recent photographs and copies of everything, in the order the advertisement lists.
  • Medical history notes: past surgeries, vision and any allergy, so the medical board does not surprise you.

The list is our checklist, not the Army’s. The advertisement for the cycle is the authority, and it can ask for more, such as category certificates or a no-objection letter. A candidate who has everything scanned and filed can apply on the first day the window opens, which matters because windows can be short.

A working candidate should also plan the year. Selection stages can be spread over months, and each board or medical needs leave. Speak early with your employer about how many days you might need, and keep a record of every call letter you receive.
