SSB Bhopal is Selection Centre Central, one of the Army’s Services Selection Board centres in Madhya Pradesh. The Indian Navy also uses Bhopal: its instructions page lists 33 SSB, Bhopal, as one of its four SSB locations. The Navy prints the centre’s address as Sultania Infantry Line, Bhopal 462018. You are allotted a centre by the service, and your call-up letter gives the reporting point and the date, so use this guide to understand the centre and not to replace the letter.
Sources here are the Indian Navy’s current SSB instructions page (last updated on 28 September 2026), an official Army call-up letter issued by Selection Centre Central, Bhopal, in January 2019, and UPSC’s current notices. The letter is old, so we use it to show the structure of such letters and flag every time we do. We could not read the Army’s recruitment portal directly, as it asks for a captcha.
Who is called to Bhopal
- Army candidates. The 2019 letter was addressed to candidates nominated to attend an SSB at Selection Centre Central, Bhopal, for the Indian Military Academy. An older Army notification (2016) lists Bhopal with Allahabad and Bangalore as Army selection centres.
- Navy candidates. The Navy’s page says SSB interviews for shortlisted officer candidates are tentatively held at Bangalore for Pilot and Naval Air Operations candidates, and at Bangalore, Bhopal, Visakhapatnam or Kolkata for other branches. Its page names 33 SSB, Bhopal, with the postal address of the President, 33 Service Selection Board, Selection Centre Central, Sultania Infantry Line, Bhopal 462018.
- Air Force candidates go to an AFSB at Dehradun, Mysuru, Gandhinagar, Varanasi or Guwahati, not to Bhopal.
The Army’s boards at Bhopal are numbered differently in different listings. We could not confirm them from an official page and so do not give numbers for them. The Navy’s 33 SSB at Bhopal is confirmed on the Navy’s page.
Which Bhopal address is right? The Navy’s official instructions page prints Selection Centre Central as Sultania Infantry Line, Bhopal 462018. Some third-party listings print a different road name for the same centre, and we could not confirm that from any official page, so we do not repeat it. If your letter shows a different address or reporting point from any website, follow your letter.
How you are allotted Bhopal
You do not apply for a centre. For the NDA, UPSC’s notice says qualified candidates register on the Army’s recruitment website and are then allotted selection centres through it. For the Navy, its instructions say a change of SSB dates is allowed only in exceptional cases and a change of venue is not allowed. The 2019 Army letter said candidates must report only on the date allotted, and that no changes would be made once allotted. It also said that candidates whose parents or close relatives serve at the centre should withhold their move and inform the centre, because the centre may change their allotment.
What a Bhopal call-up letter covered in 2019
The January 2019 letter from Selection Centre Central, Bhopal, shows how such letters are built. It is not current, and details like dates and reporting point will differ today.
- Reporting. It named a place of reporting at the Bhopal Junction railway station, where the centre’s representative received candidates, and said candidates who reached the centre directly would be accepted only up to a stated time on the reporting day.
- Process. It described five days of testing excluding the day of arrival, in two stages. Stage I started at 6:30 a.m. on the first day with the intelligence test and the picture perception and discussion test, and candidates who failed were returned that afternoon. Stage II took the next four days.
- Documents. Originals with two self-attested photocopies each, including the Matriculation certificate for date of birth, a photo ID and declarations. Final-year graduates needed additional certificates.
- Medical. The special medical board for recommended candidates was at the military hospital in Bhopal, taking three to four days after Stage II.
- Stay. Free boarding and lodging for the period at the centre, but no breakfast or lunch on the reporting day. Candidates could not leave the premises on the screening day. Mobile phones were deposited on arrival.
- What to bring. Dark trousers and a light shirt for the interview, white shorts, T-shirt and sports shoes for the outdoor tests, writing material, 20 passport photographs, toiletries and a lock. Clothing with school or academy logos was prohibited.
- Cash. It advised candidates to carry no more than a thousand rupees above travel expenses and no valuables.
- Travel allowance. Refund for eligible first-time candidates, with a form and bank details.
The Navy’s page gives similar practical points for its candidates at Bhopal: report at the railway station at the time in your letter, where a representative from the SSB will be present; carry the originals asked for, ten unattested passport photographs, white PT shoes, white socks, shorts and T-shirts and formal clothes; and bring a risk certificate signed by a parent or guardian. First-time candidates for a type of commission get a refund of the three-tier rail fare.
The five days themselves
The board is the same wherever you go. UPSC describes Stage I (the intelligence test and the picture test) and Stage II (the interview, group testing tasks, psychology tests and the conference). The Navy describes the SSB as assessing planning and organising ability, social adaptability, social effectiveness and dynamic ability, with Stage I as intelligence and picture perception tests and Stage II as psychological testing, group testing and interview. Our SSB interview process page covers each test, our SSB conference guide covers the last day, and the 15 OLQs page covers what is assessed.
