To join the Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), a boy or girl must be studying in Class VII, or have passed it, and must be between 12½ and 14 years old on the first day of the term. For the July 2027 term, whose entrance exam is on 6 December 2026, the date of birth must fall between 2 July 2013 and 1 January 2015, both days included. Admission is to Class VIII only.
The age band changed recently, and many web pages still show the old one. This guide places the two side by side with their birth-date cut-offs, then covers class, gender, domicile and documents. It is based on RIMC’s admission, prospectus and notice pages and on the NTA’s RIMCEE-2026 information bulletin, all checked on 12 October 2026.
What is the RIMC age limit: old band or new band?
The new band applies from the December 2026 exam cycle. RIMC’s flash notice states the previous criterion as 11½ to 13 years and the revised criterion as 12½ to 14 years.
| Point | Old band (June 2026 exam) | New band (December 2026 exam) |
|---|---|---|
| Exam | Held on 7 June 2026 | 6 December 2026, run by the NTA |
| Term for admission | January 2027 | July 2027 |
| Age limits | 11½ to 13 years | 12½ to 14 years |
| Age counted on | 1 January 2027 | 1 July 2027 |
| Date of birth | Not earlier than 2 January 2014 and not later than 1 July 2015 | 2 July 2013 to 1 January 2015, both days included |
| Source | RIMC notification dated 9 February 2026 | NTA RIMCEE-2026 bulletin and RIMC notice |
One point needs care. The NTA bulletin includes a worked example that lists the June 2026 exam under the 12½ to 14 formula, yet RIMC’s own notification for that exam, dated 9 February 2026, advertised the old 11½ to 13 band, and the RIMC notice says the revised band applies from the December 2026 cycle onwards. For any exam still ahead of you, follow the bulletin or notification issued for that cycle.
How do I work out the age window for the next terms?
The bulletin gives a fixed rule. The January term takes candidates who are not less than 12½ and not more than 14 years old on 1 January, and its exam is held in June of the previous year. The July term uses 1 July, with the exam in December of the previous year. Subtract 14 years from the term’s first day and add one day to find the earliest birth date. Subtract 12½ years to find the latest.
| Term | Entrance exam | Date of birth window |
|---|---|---|
| July 2027 | December 2026 | 2 July 2013 to 1 January 2015 (stated in the bulletin) |
| January 2028 | June 2027 | 2 January 2014 to 1 July 2015 (our working from the rule) |
| July 2028 | December 2027 | 2 July 2014 to 1 January 2016 (our working from the rule) |
The last two rows are our arithmetic and not an official notice. RIMC asks candidates to refer to the notification for the applicable cut-off dates, so treat them as planning dates and confirm them when the notice for that exam is published.
Which class can apply to RIMC?
Only Class VIII. The candidate must be studying in Class VII, or have passed Class VII, at a recognised school at the time of admission. There is no direct entry to Class 6, Class 9 or Class 11, which is why searches for RIMC admission in those classes lead nowhere. Entry to Class 6 and Class 9 exists at Sainik Schools and Rashtriya Military Schools instead; our RIMC vs RMS vs Sainik School page shows how they differ.
Admission is also subject to medical fitness. Qualifying the written exam and the viva voce is not enough on its own, as the RIMC viva voce and medical test guide explains.
Can girls apply to RIMC?
Yes. RIMC admits boys and girls, and the bulletin describes a tentative intake of 25 vacancies for boy cadets and 10 for girl cadets every term. The merit lists are built differently. Boys are ranked State by State, and girls are ranked on one all-India merit list with seats then allotted across five zones: North, South, East, West and Central. Girls’ age and class rules are the same as boys’.
Do domicile and category matter?
Domicile matters a great deal for boys, because seats are allotted against state-wise vacancies, and the candidate uploads a domicile certificate while applying. If the child’s own certificate is unavailable, the bulletin allows a parent’s domicile certificate to be uploaded. Wards of Central Government employees may take the exam and viva at the place of posting, but they are still considered from their original domicile State, and they must submit a serving certificate.
The bulletin states that admission is strictly on merit with no reservation policy in selection. SC and ST candidates pay a lower exam fee and a lower tuition fee, which our RIMC fee structure and seats guide breaks down.
Which documents prove eligibility?
Keep clear scans ready for the online form, and keep the originals safe, because RIMC verifies them at later stages and can reject a candidature that does not match the application.
- Birth certificate issued by a Municipal Corporation or Gram Panchayat
- Domicile certificate of the candidate, or of a parent if the child’s is not available
- School studying certificate signed by the principal, with an attested photograph, stating the date of birth as per school records and the class the child is studying in
- Aadhaar card and a recent colour passport-size photograph on a white background
- SC or ST certificate, where applicable
- Serving certificate, only for wards of Central Government employees who wish to appear from the place of posting
- Scans of the signature and the left-hand thumb impression
How and when do I apply now?
From the December 2026 cycle, the application is completely online through the National Testing Agency. RIMC and State Governments no longer issue forms. For the December 2026 exam, applications ran from 1 to 30 September 2026, late applications to 7 October, and corrections from 9 to 11 October, so that window has closed. The written exam is on 6 December 2026, results are due by 20 February 2027, and the viva voce is tentatively in April 2027.
The next regular exam should be in June 2027 for the January 2028 term, but its dates are not yet announced.
