No, coaching is not necessary for the NDA. Nothing in the UPSC notice requires it, and anyone who meets the eligibility conditions can apply and sit the paper. The question that matters is different: which parts of the NDA can you prepare for alone, and which parts do you want company and feedback for? The written paper can be prepared from the syllabus and past papers by a disciplined student. The SSB, which carries as many marks as the whole written examination, is harder to rehearse alone because it tests how you behave with other people.
We run a coaching academy, so you should read this page knowing we have an interest. We have tried to write it the way we would advise a family who had not yet decided to visit us.
What are the two halves of the NDA, and how are they scored?
The NDA written examination has two objective papers of two and a half hours each: Mathematics for 300 marks and the General Ability Test for 600 marks. The SSB then carries 900 marks, the same as the written total. UPSC places candidates in a single merit list by combining the two, and a candidate must also secure the minimum qualifying marks separately in each. A strong written score without a recommendation at the board does not lead to a seat, and a good board performance without a qualifying written score does not either.
That makes the preparation question two questions. Our syllabus and exam pattern guide covers the written paper, and our SSB interview process guide covers the board.
Sources for the NDA scheme and SSB
Which parts can you prepare alone?
| Part | Can you prepare alone? | Where company or feedback helps |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics (300 marks) | Largely yes, with the syllabus and past papers | A teacher can unstick a topic you cannot get past |
| General Ability Test: English (200) | Yes, with daily reading and error review | Someone to mark your writing and comprehension mistakes |
| General Ability Test: General Knowledge (400) | Yes, with a steady routine | A fixed plan across Physics, Chemistry, General Science, history, geography and current events |
| OIR and PPDT (Stage I of the SSB) | Partly. OIR can be practised alone, but the group discussion cannot | A real group for the picture narration and discussion |
| Psychology tests | Partly. You can write responses alone | Someone who reads your writing across tests for consistency |
| GTO tasks | Barely. Group tasks need a group | Practice with other candidates and feedback from someone who watched |
| Interview | Partly, with a friend asking questions | A mock interview by someone who can probe your record |
| Fitness | Yes | A routine and a place to train outdoors |
The pattern is clear. The written paper is self-study territory, and the SSB is where company counts. That does not mean you need a full-time course. It means you should decide honestly which parts you will cover yourself and which parts you want help with.
Who can manage without coaching, and who gains most from it?
A candidate is well placed to self-study if they are already regular with schoolwork, can sit through a full timed paper, can find and correct their own mistakes, and have friends, relatives or a school group to practise discussions with. If those describe you, a plan based on past papers and a short SSB programme near the end may be enough.
A candidate gains most from structured coaching when the routine is the problem rather than the content. Examples are a student who understands topics but does not finish papers, who studies in bursts and then not at all, who has no one to practise group tasks with, or who is preparing in a town with no defence-preparation community. Residential coaching also removes travel and distraction, which matters for a teenager who is balancing Class 12 with NDA.
A ten-question self-test
Answer yes or no. Write your answers down, because you will be tempted to round up.
- I can sit for a full two-and-a-half-hour paper without breaks, on a timer.
- I have attempted at least one full UPSC previous paper and marked it honestly, including negative marking.
- I know which topics cost me the most marks and I have a plan for each.
- I study at fixed hours most days, even when no exam is near.
- I read a newspaper or a reliable news summary every day.
- I have a group of at least a few friends or classmates with whom I can practise discussions and group tasks regularly.
- I run or train most days, and I know my fitness is improving.
- I can speak about myself, my family and my interests for a few minutes without notes.
- I can take blunt feedback about my behaviour without getting defensive.
- I have a quiet place to study and enough time after school to use it.
How to read your answers: mostly yes in questions 1 to 5 means the written paper is within your reach on your own. Mostly yes in 6 to 9 means you already have the raw material for the SSB. If you answered no to most of the second set, that is where outside help pays. If you answered no to most of the first set, a structured programme may keep you honest. Free counselling is available by phone or WhatsApp on +91 70170 31757 if you want to talk through your answers.
Where does residential coaching genuinely help?
- SSB practice with a real group. Group tasks and discussions cannot be rehearsed in a bedroom. Living and training with other candidates gives you the group.
- Feedback on behaviour. It is hard to see how you come across. A mentor or fellow candidates can tell you.
- Fitness. A routine with others is easier to keep than one you set yourself. The Air Force suggests aiming to run a mile in 10 minutes, with 10 push-ups and 3 chin-ups, before reporting to a board.
- Routine. A fixed day of classes, self-study and training removes the daily decision of whether to start.

When should you start?
The next NDA and NA examination in the UPSC calendar is NDA (I) 2027, with the notification on 2 December 2026, the last date on 22 December 2026 and the paper on 11 April 2027. The calendar says dates can change. Candidates who are in Class 12 when they apply can do so, but those appearing in Class 11 are not eligible. Our NDA eligibility criteria guide has the full conditions, and how to prepare for NDA gives a year-long plan.
A low-cost way to self-study
- Download the syllabus from the UPSC notice and tick each topic as you finish it.
- Use UPSC’s official archive of previous question papers to practise under timed conditions.
- Build your own topic list from the questions you get wrong, then revise those first.
- Use our SSB practice tools for timed OIR, PPDT and psychology-style practice.

NDA coaching: common questions
FAQs
Questions parents ask us.
Can't find yours? Ask on WhatsApp; a counsellor usually replies within working hours.
Ask on WhatsAppIs coaching necessary for NDA or CDS?
No. The UPSC notices do not require it. Many parts of the written paper can be self-studied. The SSB is harder to practise alone because group tasks need a group.
Can I crack NDA without coaching?
Candidates can prepare without coaching, and the exam does not ask how you prepared. What you should check is whether you have a plan for the SSB, which carries 900 marks, as many as the written paper.
NDA coaching vs self-study: which is better?
It depends on your discipline and your access to a practice group. Self-study suits a regular student with partners to practise with. Coaching suits a student who needs a routine and group practice.
When should I start NDA coaching?
There is no fixed rule. Many students begin in Class 11 or 12, and the UPSC calendar lists the next paper on 11 April 2027, with the notification on 2 December 2026.
Is online or offline NDA coaching better?
That is a personal choice. Our classes are held in person in Dehradun with hostels, and we do not teach online.
What does residential NDA coaching include?
At GS India Defence Academy it means classroom coaching, SSB-focused preparation and separate boys' and girls' hostels with a mess. Fees are listed on our fee structure page.
