Best Books for NDA: Class-wise Booklist (NCERT First)

A class-wise NDA booklist that starts with NCERT and adds one title per paper, matched to the headings in UPSC's syllabus, for students starting in Class 8, 11 or 12.

6 min read Last reviewed Reviewed by GS India Defence Academy faculty

Start with the NCERT textbooks, because the NDA syllabus is school-level and NCERT covers most of it. Then add one book for each part of the written paper: Mathematics, English and General Knowledge. Below is a class-wise booklist, with each title tied to a heading in UPSC’s syllabus. The only authority on what to study is the syllabus in UPSC’s notice. These books are tools for covering it, and we make no claim that any one of them is better than another.

All the titles listed are real, widely available books. Editions change every year or two, so check the edition on the cover and against the current syllabus. We do not host or link to PDFs of any book.

Start from UPSC’s syllabus

The notice for NDA and NA (II) 2026 sets out the syllabus. A booklist makes sense only against it.

  • Paper I, Mathematics (300 marks): Algebra; Matrices and Determinants; Trigonometry; Analytical Geometry of two and three dimensions; Differential Calculus; Integral Calculus and Differential Equations; Vector Algebra; Statistics and Probability.
  • Paper II, Part A, English (200 marks): grammar and usage, vocabulary, comprehension and cohesion in extended text.
  • Paper II, Part B, General Knowledge (400 marks): Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History and the freedom movement, Geography and Current Events. The notice gives the weightage as roughly 25%, 15%, 10%, 20%, 20% and 10% for those six sections.

Notice what the notice does not ask for: it names no book and no reading list. Everything below is our suggestion for how to cover it.

NCERT first, for every section

  • Mathematics: the NCERT Mathematics textbooks for Class 11 and Class 12. Most of the headings above (sets and relations, trigonometry, matrices and determinants, calculus, vectors, three-dimensional geometry, probability) are chapters in these two books.
  • Physics, Chemistry and General Science: the NCERT Science textbooks for Classes 6 to 10, and the NCERT Physics and Chemistry textbooks for Class 11 and 12 for depth.
  • History, Geography and Social Studies: the NCERT History, Geography and Political Science textbooks for the middle and senior school years.

If you read only these and then practise from UPSC’s past papers, you are working on the right things. The rest of this page is for readers who want a second book for a paper.

Class-wise booklist

The table gives a path from Class 8 or 11. The UPSC eligibility begins at Class 12, since a candidate appearing in Class 12 may apply and one appearing in Class 11 may not, so the earlier years are for building the base.

Authors are given as they appear in publisher and library listings. Where a title has editions from several publishers (the R.D. Sharma and S.L. Loney titles, for example), we have not named one, since you should buy the current edition you can verify. We have left out titles whose author or publisher we could not confirm.

One book per paper is enough

A common mistake is to collect a shelf of guides. A more reliable plan is:

  1. Finish the NCERT books for each section first.
  2. Pick one practice book for Mathematics and work through it chapter by chapter. Skip chapters that are not in UPSC’s list.
  3. Pick one book for English grammar and one for vocabulary. Read newspapers or an editorial daily to build comprehension speed.
  4. For General Knowledge, build short notes by section using the weightage above, with the most time on Physics, History and Geography.
  5. Then move to timed practice on UPSC’s papers. The pattern and links are on our NDA previous year papers page.

Because wrong answers lose one-third of a question’s marks, practice that stresses accuracy matters more than reading many books.

Two cautions about booklists

  • Publisher lists. Many “best book” lists are published by the same companies that sell the books. A title appearing on such a list is not evidence that it is better than others, and we do not suggest it is. We list titles so you know what to look for, and the syllabus decides what to study.
  • Free PDF mirrors. Pirated PDFs of coaching books circulate widely. They are copyright infringement, they are often outdated or incomplete, and files from unknown sites can be unsafe to open. UPSC’s own question papers are free and legal on upsc.gov.in. Buy or borrow the books you need from a shop or a library.

If you are starting early

Students in Class 8 to 10 do not need NDA-specific books yet. Strong NCERT Mathematics and Science, a daily reading habit and a clear understanding of the eligibility rules in our NDA eligibility criteria guide are enough. For how to plan the final years, see how to prepare for the NDA and how to join the NDA after 10th and 12th. Our NDA syllabus and exam pattern guide goes through each topic. Families that want a structured start alongside school can look at the NDA foundation course.

FAQs

Questions parents ask us.

Can't find yours? Ask on WhatsApp; a counsellor usually replies within working hours.

Which book is best for NDA Mathematics?

The notice names none. Start with the NCERT Class 11 and 12 textbooks, which cover most syllabus headings, and add one practice book, such as R.D. Sharma's Class 11 and 12 Mathematics textbooks, for extra problems.

Are NCERT books enough for the NDA?

For many sections they are a strong base, and the syllabus is school-level. Add timed practice from UPSC's past papers, and a second book for English and Mathematics if you need more questions.

Which book should I use for NDA English?

Use a grammar book such as Wren and Martin's High School English Grammar and Composition, a vocabulary book such as Norman Lewis's Word Power Made Easy, and practice from a book like S.P. Bakshi's Objective General English.

What should I read for NDA General Knowledge?

NCERT Science, History and Geography, then one book each for the freedom movement and physical geography, and a current events source. UPSC says Physics carries about 25% of the General Knowledge marks.

Can I start NDA preparation in Class 8?

You can build the base, with NCERT Mathematics and Science and good reading habits. UPSC's eligibility begins with Class 12, since a Class 11 student cannot apply.

Where can I get NDA papers for practice?

On UPSC's website. Our NDA previous year papers page links every paper from 2016 to 2026 to UPSC's file.
