SSB Bangalore: Selection Centre South Guide

What the Army and Navy pages say about SSB Bangalore: address, reporting, documents, dates, stay and the days at the board.

SSB Bangalore is the Services Selection Board at Selection Centre South on Cubbon Road, Bangalore 560042. The Army uses it, and so does the Navy, whose own SSB instructions list the board as 12 SSB, Bangalore. Your call-up letter fixes your date and your reporting point; this guide gathers what the services’ official pages say about reaching the centre, reporting, what to carry and how the days run.

A note on independence: GS India Defence Academy is a private coaching academy in Dehradun. It is not part of the Army, the Navy or any selection board, and nothing here is an official instruction. Your call-up letter and the notice for your entry override every guide, including this one.

What is SSB Bangalore and who is called there?

The Army selects officers through Selection Centres, and each centre runs more than one Services Selection Board. The Army’s SSB interview centre allotment page lists four: Allahabad (Prayagraj), Bhopal, Bangalore and Kapurthala. Selection Centre South at Bangalore is the southern one. The Army’s own description of the centre, which has since been taken down from its recruitment portal, placed it on Cubbon Road with three boards, 12, 17 and 24 SSB, and said that 12 SSB was raised on 1 April 1949.

The Navy sends candidates to the same address. Its Instructions for SSB page prints the call-up office of 12 SSB, Bangalore, and its officer selection page says that for the INET route, pilot and Naval Air Operations candidates are scheduled for SSB at Bangalore, while other branches are split between Bangalore, Bhopal, Visakhapatnam and Kolkata. The Navy’s advertisement for the 10+2 B.Tech course of January 2027 likewise lists Bengaluru among its four SSB cities.

Telephone numbers on any list can go out of date. If your call-up letter prints a number, use that one.

How do you report at SSB Bangalore?

The Navy’s instructions are specific about the first step. Candidates are to report at the railway station named in the call-up letter, at the date and time given there. A representative of the SSB is present at the station for reception, and in case of any difficulty the candidate is to contact the Movement Control Officer (MCO) at Bangalore railway station.

A published Army letter for another centre (Bhopal, 2019) shows the same pattern. It told candidates to report only on the date allotted to them, said that a representative would receive them and arrange conveyance to the Selection Centre, and warned that candidates arriving on any other date would not be accepted. That letter is old and belongs to a different centre, so treat it as an illustration of how such letters read, not as your instruction.

  1. Open your call-up letter and note the date, the hour and the exact reporting point. Write them on the first page of your folder.
  2. Plan to reach the city the evening before. The free boarding and lodging the Army describes covers the days of testing, so the night before is your own arrangement.
  3. Book tickets that leave a buffer for a late train, and keep the tickets safe for the fare claim.
  4. On arrival, look for the SSB representative at the point named in your letter. If you cannot find anyone, go to the MCO at the station, as the Navy advises.
  5. Do not change plans because a website or a past candidate describes a different meeting point. The letter in your hand is the authority.

What should you carry to SSB Bangalore?

Lists differ between services and between entries, so read the list in your own letter first. These items are common to the official pages we checked.

ItemWhy it matters
Printout of the call-up letterThe Navy’s instructions ask for it, and it carries your batch, date and reporting point
Original matriculation certificate showing your date of birthUPSC’s CDS notice says candidates who do not carry the original certificates are not allowed to appear and are sent back at their own expense
Original degree, provisional degree or mark sheetsSame rule; final-year candidates carry a certificate in original from the Principal as the notice describes
Ten passport-size photographs, not attestedListed on the Navy’s page
White PT shoes, white socks, white shorts and white T-shirts; two sets of formal shirt and trousers in sober coloursNavy kit list for the group tasks and the interview
Risk certificate signed by a parent or guardianThe Navy asks for a signed statement that you attend at your own risk with the guardian’s consent
Rail or bus ticketsNeeded for the travel claim

If you are a final-year student, the CDS notice says the certificate from your Principal must state that you have appeared or are appearing in the final examination. Ask your college for it well before the call-up arrives.

Can you change your SSB Bangalore date or centre?

Rarely. The Navy’s page says a change of SSB dates is allowed only in exceptional cases and that a change of venue is not allowed; the request goes to the call-up officer of the SSB concerned. UPSC’s CDS notice says requests for postponement are considered only in very genuine circumstances and only if administratively convenient, and that they go to the Selection Centre that sent the call. The Army’s FAQ page adds that a candidate who cannot attend for an unavoidable reason may write or speak to the concerned Selection Centre, and that a candidate who also misses the absentee batch is not given another date straight away.

The practical lesson is to decide early. If a family event, an examination or an injury threatens your date, contact the call-up office the same day, in writing, and keep a copy.

Where do you stay, and is the fare refunded?

The Army’s FAQ page says boarding and lodging are free of cost during the interview and that nothing is recovered later. On travel, it says the allowance is for the entitled class of rail travel. The Navy refunds the to-and-fro 3-tier rail fare on production of tickets when you appear for the first time for a particular type of commission. Both are first-attempt benefits, so keep every ticket.

The Army and Navy pages we read do not say whether a parent may stay on the premises. The Air Force’s guidelines say that parents and guardians make their own arrangements, so plan on a guest house or hotel near the station for anyone travelling with you unless your letter says otherwise.

How do the days at the board run?

UPSC’s CDS notice describes a two-stage procedure that applies at the Services Selection Boards. Stage I has the Officer Intelligence Rating tests and the Picture Perception and Description Test, and candidates are shortlisted on both. Stage II has the interview, group testing officer tasks, psychology tests and the conference, spread over four days. Three assessors, the Interviewing Officer, the Group Testing Officer and the Psychologist, observe each candidate, and their marks along with the conference carry equal weightage. The Navy’s page describes the same two stages and adds that those who are recommended go on to a medical examination of about three to five days.

Our guide to the SSB interview process explains each test in order. If you want to rehearse the picture and word-association stage, the free SSB practice tool is built for it.

How should you prepare once the call-up arrives?

Whatever time you have between the letter and the reporting date, use it in order. Start by understanding the format and fill in your Personal Information Questionnaire honestly, since every line of it can become a question. Then spend the middle of your time on timed Stage I papers, a daily run, push-ups and pull-ups, and group discussion with friends where each person must listen before speaking. Keep the last few days light, sort your documents and sleep well.
