There is no single merchant navy salary. Pay depends on rank, ship type, employer and whether the ship flies the Indian flag, and seafarers are paid under contracts, not government pay scales. We found no official table of current rupee wages, so this guide does not print one. It explains how pay is built, which sources to check and how to judge any figure you are shown.
Coaching sites often quote ranges that differ by about two times for the same rank. A number with no document behind it is not an answer. GS India Defence Academy is a private coaching academy and not a manning agent, and we do not recruit seafarers.
How is merchant navy pay built?
| Factor | Why it changes pay |
|---|---|
| Rank | Cadets, ratings, junior officers, senior officers and masters or chief engineers sit on different wage scales |
| Flag | Indian-flag ships follow collective agreements; foreign-flag ships follow their owner’s or manager’s terms |
| Vessel type | Tankers, bulk carriers, container ships and offshore vessels pay differently |
| Contract length | Seafarers work on contracts and are paid for the contract period, not a fixed monthly career salary |
| Employer or manning agent | Offers differ, so the written contract is the document that counts |
What do we know about Indian-flag wages?
Wages of Indian seafarers on Indian ships are normally settled through the National Maritime Board between shipowners’ and seafarers’ bodies. Press reports describe an agreement signed in December 2020 that ran to December 2023, and we found no confirmation of a newer one. Percentage increases are not rupee wages, so we do not convert them into figures. For the current scale, ask the Directorate General of Shipping, a seafarers’ union or the shipping company.
What ladder will an officer climb?
A deck cadet from the Diploma in Nautical Science or B.Sc Nautical Science can take DG Shipping examinations toward officer certificates, and engineers follow their own examination path. Rank progression is tied to certificates and sea time, not to age. See our merchant navy after 12th guide for the courses.
What about tax?
Tax treatment for seafarers depends on residency status and the rules in force, and we are not tax advisers. Treat any article that says a seafarer pays no tax as a claim to check with a chartered accountant, using the contract and your actual days outside India.

How do you check a salary claim?
- Ask for the source: a contract, a collective agreement or an employer letter.
- Check which rank, vessel and contract length the figure belongs to.
- Check whether it is Indian-flag or foreign-flag and in which currency.
- Check whether it includes overtime, leave pay and allowances, or basic wages only.
- Ask the Directorate General of Shipping or a seafarers’ union for the scale, and verify the manning agent on the DG Shipping list.
What does a student earn while still training?
IMU’s prospectus gives one verified stipend: student-apprentices on the shore-side BBA (Maritime Logistics) programme get a minimum of Rs 7,000 a month under the Apprentices Act. It does not state wages for deck or engine cadets, and the sea-going courses carry fees at IMU campuses of Rs 2,75,000 for the academic year. Students should plan for the cost of training before the first contract.
Should salary decide your course?
A medical rejection or a failed approval check costs more than any difference in pay. Start from your stream, your medical standard and your interest in deck or engine work. The Coast Guard publishes its own pay tables, which you can compare in our Navik and Yantrik salary guide, but the merchant navy is a civilian career with different terms.
What is usually in a seafarer’s pay?
A contract usually separates basic wages from other components such as overtime, leave pay, a bonus or allowances for particular vessel types. Which components exist, and how they are calculated, is set by the agreement or contract, not by a public rule we could cite. Compare offers component by component, never by the total alone, because an offer with high overtime assumptions can look larger than one with a better basic.
How does the contract cycle affect what you earn in a year?
A seafarer works for a contract period and then goes on leave, and pay during leave depends on the terms. A figure quoted per month while on board is therefore not a figure for a calendar year. If you are shown an annual number, ask how many months on board and on leave it assumes, and whether leave is paid. This is the main reason that figures from different sites cannot be compared.
What should you weigh against the pay?
- Training cost: IMU campuses list Rs 2,75,000 for the academic year for residential B.Tech, B.Sc (NS) and DNS.
- Medical risk: IMU’s prospectus says fees are not refunded if a candidate is rejected on medical standards.
- Time away from home on contract, and the effect on family life.
- Certification: each officer step needs DG Shipping examinations and sea time.
What should a family ask a manning agent?
- The agent’s licence details, which you can verify on the Directorate General of Shipping’s website, which lists recruitment and placement service agencies.
- The name of the shipping company, the vessel type and the flag, in writing.
- The wage terms in the contract itself, with each component named.
- Whether any fee is being asked of you. Ask what it is for and whether it appears in the contract.
- The repatriation terms and what happens if the contract ends early.
A licensed agent should have no difficulty answering. If anyone asks you for money before a contract is in your hands, step back and ask the Directorate General of Shipping or a seafarers’ union before you pay.
What can a student do now?
Instead of chasing a number, build the profile that opens doors: a good PCM average, a clean medical, an English score above the cut-off and the IMU CET rank. Our IMU CET guide sets out the conditions, and our DNS sponsorship guide shows how to test a sponsor’s offer. Those are the things within your control while the pay scale stays outside it.
