To become an army officer you need either a Class 12 pass or a degree, and every route ends in the Services Selection Board. After Class 12 the main routes are the National Defence Academy exam run by UPSC and the Army’s 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme. After graduation they are the Combined Defence Services Examination, technical and NCC entries, and, for the Air Force, AFCAT. The Navy and the Air Force run parallel entries, and women can apply through several of them.

What if you are in Class 10 or Class 11?

None of the officer entries on the official Army, Navy and Air Force pages accepts a Class 10 certificate on its own. The UPSC notice for the NDA also says that candidates who are only appearing in the Class 11 examination are not eligible. What you can do is choose your Class 11 subjects with the end in mind. The Army wing of the NDA accepts a Class 12 pass in any stream. The Air Force and Naval wings of the NDA need Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, and so do the Army’s Technical Entry Scheme and the Navy’s 10+2 B.Tech entry. Our guide on joining NDA after 10th and 12th explains the school-level choices.

How can girls become army, navy or air force officers?

Women are eligible through several entries. The NDA examination takes unmarried women for the Army, Navy and Air Force wings and the Naval Academy, in separate gender-pure merit lists. The CDS takes women for the Officers’ Training Academy short service commission, with 18 vacancies in CDS (II) 2026. AFCAT takes women for flying and ground duty branches. Women applying to the CDS pay no examination fee, and the NDA fee is waived for women as well.

What do all these routes have in common?

  • A written or shortlisting stage. UPSC examines for NDA and CDS, the Air Force for AFCAT and the Navy for INET. Some entries, such as NCC special entry and the Navy 10+2 B.Tech entry, shortlist on other criteria.
  • The Services Selection Board. All of them pass through a two-stage SSB. Stage I is OIR and PP&DT, and Stage II is the interview, group tasks, psychology tests and conference. See our SSB interview process guide.
  • A medical examination. Recommended candidates are examined by a board of service medical officers. Standards are in the services’ published manuals.
  • A merit list and vacancies. Selection depends on merit and the vacancies the service declares for that course.
  • Marriage restrictions during training. UPSC and the IAF notices require candidates to undertake not to marry until training is complete.

What does an officer’s pay look like at the start?

The UPSC notices print the pay scale. A Lieutenant is at Level 10 of the pay matrix, from ₹56,100 to ₹1,77,500, with Military Service Pay of ₹15,500 per month, and officer cadets receive a fixed stipend of ₹56,100 a month during training. The notice says all pay and allowances are subject to revision. It is not a reason to choose an entry, but it is accurate.
