Agniveer or NDA After 12th: Which Path Fits You? (Age, Pay, Rank, Selection)

A side-by-side comparison of Agniveer entry and the NDA from official notices.

Agniveer and the NDA both open after Class 12, but they are different careers. An Agniveer is enrolled for four years as a soldier, sailor or airman, while an NDA cadet is selected through the UPSC examination and the SSB to train as a commissioned officer. Compare them on rank, selection, pay and age before you decide.

Can you plan for both?

Age windows are set by date of birth, not by year of study, so the two entries can fall on the same student. In 2026 the Air Force’s Intake 02/2027 block, 1 July 2005 to 1 January 2010, and the NDA (II) 2026 block, 1 January 2008 to 1 January 2011, overlapped for candidates born between 1 January 2008 and 1 January 2010. Those candidates were within the date-of-birth window for both. Each entry has its own notice, application and dates, so read both and track them in your own calendar. Our exam calendar page tracks UPSC dates.

Class 12 Mathematics is useful for both routes, and so is fitness. The difference in preparation is the SSB: an NDA candidate who qualifies in the written examination goes to the Services Selection Board, which is the intelligence and personality test, and our SSB interview guide explains it.

How do you decide?

  • Do you want to be a commissioned officer, and are you ready for the longer path of a degree-level academy and SSB attempts? The NDA is that route.
  • Do you want to join a service sooner, in a trade, with a defined four-year term and a Seva Nidhi? Agniveer is that route.
  • Are you eligible for the NDA at all? Check the UPSC notice’s date-of-birth window and your Class 12 subjects before you plan.
  • How would you feel if you do not get a place in the regular cadre after four years? Read the after-Agniveer guide before you decide.

How does the NDA cycle run?

The UPSC notice for NDA and NA (II) 2026 gives a good picture of the timeline and the numbers.

Notice and last date to applyNotified on 20 May 2026; last date 9 June 2026.
Written examination13 September 2026.
Written resultExpected in October 2026; the SSB for qualified candidates is likely from December 2026 to January 2027.
VacanciesAbout 394 in all, 370 for men and 24 for women, for the 158th NDA course and the 120th Indian Naval Academy course starting 1 July 2027.
Fee₹100, with exemption for SC, ST and women candidates.

Officer pay in the same notice starts at Level 10: a Lieutenant draws ₹56,100 to ₹1,77,500, a Captain ₹61,300 to ₹1,93,900 in Level 10B, and a Major ₹69,400 to ₹2,07,200 in Level 11. These are pay scales, not take-home figures, and they do not include allowances.

An Agniveer’s package is a fixed customised amount for four years, with the Seva Nidhi at the end, so the two are different in kind and not only in size. Think about the length of commitment as well as the money.

One more difference is the cost of a wrong turn. If an Agniveer candidate does not clear the Army’s, Navy’s or Air Force’s stages, the next notice brings another chance within the age window. If an NDA candidate does not clear the SSB, the same applies, but the UPSC examination comes only at fixed points in the year, so keep the dates of both in front of you.
