No official body ranks cities for defence coaching, so this page ranks none. It compares facts that you can verify for the cities families ask about most: whether the city is a UPSC NDA examination centre, which official defence institutions or selection boards are there, and how easily it connects to Dehradun, where GS India Defence Academy coaches. Dehradun is stronger on some points and other cities on others, and we say which.
What makes a city suit defence coaching?
Five things are worth weighing, in roughly this order.
- Your child’s routine. Can the student live and study in a settled way, at home or in a hostel you have inspected?
- The examination centre. Every city in the table below is a UPSC NDA centre, so this rarely separates them. Applications are first-apply-first-allot, so the date you apply matters more than the city you choose.
- Defence surroundings. A city with cantonments, regimental centres or training academies can motivate a teenager, though it does not make a student more likely to be selected.
- Access. How many hours, and how many changes, stand between the family and the student?
- The academy itself. Results you can verify, named teachers, fees on paper, a hostel you have seen. These count for more than the city.
One thing that does not belong on the list is a selection board in town. After the written result, candidates are allotted a Selection Centre through the recruiting website, wherever they studied.

The table uses only facts drawn from the UPSC notices for the NDA and CDS examinations, the recruiting sites of the Army, Navy and Air Force, the Rashtriya Indian Military College site and, for command headquarters and regimental centres, the research behind our city pages.

Read the table with care. The National Defence Academy being in Pune, for example, says nothing about any coaching academy there. Admission to the NDA runs through the UPSC examination and the SSB, not through proximity.
Cities families ask about
Delhi is the city people name most often when they search for NDA coaching, in our keyword research, and the seat of the recruiting headquarters. A family in the NCR can study at home, and our comparison of Dehradun and Delhi sets out when that is the sensible choice.

Chandigarh is the nearest of the big cities to Dehradun at about 157 km, though only one direct train links them. Jaipur is 512 km away and has one weekly direct train. Pune, Hyderabad and Bengaluru host famous institutions but are far from Dehradun, and we have not compared rail links for them.

Within Dehradun, the railway station is about 10 km from the academy, the ISBT about 8 km and Jolly Grant airport about 33 km.

It is a UPSC NDA centre, and 1 AFSB, an Air Force Selection Board, sits at Clement Town. What Dehradun does not offer is the sheer size of a metro city. If your child studies best in a large city among many academies, or lives in one already, the right choice may be there.
When your own city is enough
A student who is settled at home, has a trusted academy nearby and a school schedule to keep has little reason to move. Judge that academy with the same checks as any other, and consider Dehradun only if something is missing, such as a residential routine. Where is the National Defence Academy?
At Khadakwasla, Pune. Army cadets then go to the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, Naval cadets to the Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala and Air Force cadets to the Air Force Academy in Hyderabad.
Does coaching near the NDA or an SSB centre improve my chances?
Selection does not depend on where a candidate studied. Admission runs through the UPSC written examination and the Services Selection Board, and centres are allotted through the recruiting website.
Is Dehradun a good city for defence coaching?
