If your child can work well from home in Lucknow, staying put is a perfectly good choice. Dehradun, 564 km away, is worth considering when you want a residential routine in the city that hosts the Indian Military Academy and you are ready for a journey of about 8 hours each way. Both cities are UPSC centres for the NDA, so the real question is how your child will live and study for the year.
Lucknow and Dehradun side by side
| Factor | Lucknow | Dehradun |
|---|---|---|
| UPSC NDA (II) 2026 centre | Yes | Yes |
| Army and Air Force presence | Headquarters of Central Command; 11 Gorkha Rifles Regimental Centre | Indian Military Academy; Rashtriya Indian Military College; 1 AFSB, an Air Force Selection Board |
| Selection board in the city | None of the Army’s Selection Centres or the Air Force’s boards is in Lucknow | 1 AFSB at Clement Town |
| Where a student lives | At home, or in accommodation the family arranges | Separate boys’ and girls’ hostels with a mess at GS India Defence Academy |
| Distance between the cities | 564 km by road, about 7.4 hours without traffic | The same |
| Coaching | Many academies; judge each by the same checks | GS India Defence Academy and others |
Do not choose a city for its selection board. After the written result, the recruiting website allots each candidate a Selection Centre, so living in Lucknow or in Dehradun does not decide where your SSB is held. Uttar Pradesh has an Army Selection Centre at Allahabad and an Air Force board at Varanasi, and neither is in Lucknow.
The journey: Lucknow to Dehradun
Distances and timings below come from OpenStreetMap routing and Indian Railways timetable data (erail.in), checked in October 2026. Check IRCTC or NTES before you book.
| Option | Details |
|---|---|
| Vande Bharat | Lucknow 05:15 to Dehradun 13:40, 8 h 25 min, six days a week, not Mondays |
| Banaras to Dehradun Express | A daily overnight train that also serves Lucknow; check the Lucknow timings on IRCTC |
| Bus | The Uttarakhand Transport Corporation lists a Dehradun ISBT to Lucknow route via Bareilly; service class and timings are not verified here, so check its timetable |
| Road | About 564 km; around 7.4 hours without traffic, and longer in practice |
The Vande Bharat leaves early and arrives in the afternoon, so a family can reach Dehradun, visit the hostel and classrooms and still have the evening. Within Dehradun, the railway station is about 10 km from the academy, the ISBT about 8 km and Jolly Grant airport about 33 km.
What Lucknow offers a family
Lucknow offers home. A student who sleeps in a familiar room and eats familiar food, with parents nearby, carries less strain than one who has moved 564 km away. There is no relocation, and you can see classrooms and meet teachers on any afternoon. Lucknow also has the headquarters of the Army’s Central Command, which gives the city a service presence of its own.
The city has coaching options of its own. We have not assessed any of them and we name none. Judge each with the same checks you would use anywhere: verifiable results, teachers introduced by name with their consent, fees on paper, current batch size, a weekly timetable and a test calendar. Our guide to choosing a defence academy in India lists them.
What Dehradun offers a family
Dehradun offers a residential routine and a defence setting. The Indian Military Academy, where Army cadets train after the National Defence Academy, and the Rashtriya Indian Military College are both in the city. GS India Defence Academy coaches in the classroom only, with SSB-focused preparation, and has separate boys’ and girls’ hostels with a mess. Parents can visit before admission. For free counselling, call or WhatsApp +91 70170 31757 and ask for a hostel visit; our page for Lucknow students adds travel and exam-centre details.
What Dehradun costs you is distance. Visits home need a full day each way, an emergency means a long journey, and a student who has never lived away needs time to settle. Be honest with yourselves about that before you decide.
Three questions to settle it
- Can your child keep a steady daily routine at home? If yes, and a trusted academy is close, the case for moving is weaker. If home distractions or a long daily commute eat the day, a hostel may help.
- How often will the family want to meet? With an 8-hour train in between, plan for visits at holidays, not weekends.
- What does the hostel look like in person? Ask to see the rooms, the mess and the person in charge, and to have the rules in writing. Our checklist for NDA coaching with a hostel lists the questions.
Planning a first visit from Lucknow
A visit is the cheapest way to settle the question. Take the early train, spend the afternoon at the academy and stay overnight, so that you see the hostel in the evening as well as the classroom by day. Ask to meet the person in charge of the hostel, to see the mess at a meal time, and to take away the weekly timetable and the fee break-up in writing. Check the return train’s running days and timings before you book, because they may not match the journey out.
Use the visit to decide how the family will stay in touch. Ask how parents are told about progress, who answers the phone, and what the leave and visiting rules are. You can reach the academy on +91 70170 31757 by call or WhatsApp. A student who is 564 km away needs a clear arrangement for these things before the first week, not after the first problem.
Writing the exam: your coaching city and your exam city need not match
UPSC lists both Lucknow and Dehradun among the NDA and NA Examination (II) 2026 centres. Centres are allotted first-apply-first-allot, with a ceiling for each, and UPSC does not entertain a change of centre later. A student who trains in Dehradun can choose Lucknow as the centre and travel home for the paper, but only by choosing it on the day applications open.
