The best NDA coaching with a hostel for your child is the one where both the classroom and the hostel run on rules you have seen in writing, and where you have visited before paying. GS India Defence Academy in Dehradun has separate boys’ and girls’ hostels and a mess, and the checklist below works for any residential academy in India, ours included.
Why families from other cities look for a hostel
An NDA aspirant from Meerut or Delhi can sometimes travel to class. Most families further away cannot. Dehradun is about 231 km by road from Delhi, 564 km from Lucknow, 512 km from Jaipur and 1,065 km from Patna, so a daily commute is out of the question and a safe place to live becomes part of the admission decision. Parents are choosing a teacher and a home for the year in one go.
There is also a study reason. Preparing for the NDA is a routine before it is a syllabus: fixed hours for classes, revision, meals, exercise and sleep, kept up for months. A hostel can make that routine easier to hold, because the day is not broken by travel or by the pull of home distractions. It does not do the studying for the student, and a badly run hostel can undo the benefit, which is why the inspection matters.
Residential NDA coaching: what to check on a visit
Take this table with you. Each row names something to look at and a question to ask. Whatever the answer, ask for the rule or the figure in writing.
| Area | What to look for | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Supervision | A named person in charge of the building and someone present after classes end. | Who is on duty at night, and how do I reach them? |
| Rooms | Clean rooms, enough space per bed, light, ventilation and storage. | How many students share a room, and who decides the allocation? |
| Mess | A kitchen and dining area you are allowed to see, and clean drinking water. | What is the weekly menu, and how are special diets handled? |
| Entry and exit | Posted timings, a visitors’ register and a place where visitors are received. | How are outings approved, and is a parent told when a student leaves? |
| Health | A plan for a student who falls ill, including the nearest hospital. | Who takes a sick student to the doctor, and who calls me? |
| Distance to class | Whether students walk to class or need transport. | How long does the morning route take? |
| Girls’ hostel | A building separate from the boys’ hostel, with its own rules and staff. | Who is responsible for the girls’ hostel, and what are its visiting rules? |
| Money | Hostel and mess charged as lines of their own, with the deposit stated. | What is refundable, and when? |
What GS India Defence Academy can tell you today
We would rather give you a short list of things you can verify than a long list you cannot. Here is what we can state.
- Boys and girls live in separate hostels, and a mess is run for residents.
- The hostel is open to students of every course we offer, from NDA to CDS, AFCAT and SSB.
- Coaching is in the classroom in Dehradun, at Street 1, Subharti Road, Nanda Ki Chowki, Lower Kolhupani. We have no online classes.
- Parents can visit before admission and see the hostel and the mess.
- Hostel and mess charges appear on the fee structure page, apart from tuition.
Details such as room-sharing, staff on duty, visiting rules and the menu are shared in person and in writing at counselling, because they should be checked against what you actually see. Our hostel and mess page describes how we approach each of them, and the gallery has photographs, though a photograph is no substitute for a visit.
“Safest hostel” claims: what they can and cannot mean
Many academies describe their hostel as the safest. Nobody can prove that, and a parent should not be asked to take it on trust. Safety is a set of working arrangements: a responsible adult on site, rules for who comes and goes, a plan for illness, and a way to raise a complaint. Ask the academy to show each one. Ask to speak to parents whose children are already living there, and compare what they say with what the counsellor said.
For girls, the questions are the same and the stakes feel higher. A separate building is the starting point, not the finish. Find out who the warden is, how outings work and what the parents of a girl in the hostel are told when she leaves. Our NDA coaching for girls page covers the girls’ batch in full.
Getting your child to Dehradun
These timings come from Indian Railways timetable data (erail.in) and road estimates checked in October 2026. Confirm train times on IRCTC or NTES before you book.
| From | Road distance (approx.) | Fastest direct train in the timetable data |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi | 231 km | Anand Vihar Terminal to Dehradun Vande Bharat, 4 h 45 min, six days a week; New Delhi to Dehradun Jan Shatabdi, 5 h 45 min, daily |
| Meerut | 192 km | Vande Bharat from Meerut City, about 4 hours |
| Chandigarh | 157 km | Amritsar to Dehradun Express, 7 h 15 min, daily |
| Lucknow | 564 km | Lucknow to Dehradun Vande Bharat, 8 h 25 min, six days a week |
| Jaipur | 512 km | One weekly direct train, about 15 hours |
| Patna | 1,065 km | Direct trains take about 21 hours |
Inside Dehradun, the railway station is about 10 km from the academy, the ISBT about 8 km and Jolly Grant airport about 33 km. Plan the first journey with a parent, travel in daylight where you can, and keep the hostel’s phone number saved before you leave home.
Counting the full cost of a residential year
Compare academies on the whole year and not on the headline fee. A fair comparison lists tuition, hostel, mess, registration, any refundable deposit, study material and travel home. Ask each academy which of these are refundable and when. We show hostel and mess separately on the fee structure page so that you can add up the year yourself.
When a day scholar may be enough
If your family lives in Dehradun, or within an hour or two of it, you may not need a hostel at all. Haridwar is about 60 km away and Roorkee about 71 km, with trains of roughly one to two hours, though a daily trip before an early class is tiring for a teenager. Read the pages for Haridwar and Roorkee students and ask the counsellor what the weekly timetable looks like before you decide.
A short script for your first call
Call or WhatsApp +91 70170 31757 for free counselling. Whichever academy you ring, these six questions give you a fair first impression:
- Are the boys’ and girls’ hostels separate buildings, and may we visit before paying?
- What exactly does the hostel fee cover, and what is charged on top?
- Who is in charge of the hostel after classes end?
- How many students are in the batch I would join?
- May I have the weekly timetable and the fee break-up in writing?
- What is the refund position if my child decides to leave in the first month?
