RMS coaching for the Class 6 and Class 9 Common Entrance Test
The Rashtriya Military Schools are residential schools for boys with a military character, and the Common Entrance Test, or CET, is the door into them. Families often hear about them through a relative in the services, a neighbour, or a classmate’s cousin, and then discover that very little reliable information exists in one place. This page tries to fix that for parents in Dehradun and beyond.
Our RMS coaching in Dehradun prepares students in Class 5 and Class 8 for the CET through in-person classes at Street 1, Subharti Road, Nanda Ki Chowki, Lower Kolhupani. We do not teach online. The batch is built around the skills that an OMR-based test rewards: clear basics in mathematics and language, speed with accuracy, calm under time pressure and good general awareness. For a child of ten or thirteen, that comes from patient practice and not from tricks.
The course suits:
- students in Class 5 who want to prepare for Class 6 entry
- students in Class 8 who want to prepare for Class 9 entry
- families who are also considering Sainik School or RIMC, because the preparation overlaps
- parents who want a school-year plan, rather than a last-minute rush
We also ask parents to take a hard look at the arrangement. These are boarding schools, and the child will live away from home. Visiting the school, talking to current parents and reading the latest notice carefully are all as important as the coaching.
Questions to ask before you apply
A boarding school is a family decision, and these are fair questions to put to any school or coaching centre, including ours.
- Have we read the latest CET notification ourselves, and not only a summary of it?
- Does the child’s date of birth fall inside the window for the class we are targeting?
- Is the child comfortable being away from home for long stretches, and have we asked the child directly?
- What will the child do in the months between the test and the result, and what is our plan if the seat does not come?
Families who talk these through early tend to prepare calmly, and the child feels the difference.
RMS eligibility: what the schools’ site states
The schools’ official admission page states the following. As the notices can change from year to year, read the latest CET notification before applying.
| Point | What the official admission page states |
|---|---|
| Classes | Class 6 and Class 9 |
| Age for Class 6 | Not less than 10 and not more than 12 years as on 31 March of the admission year |
| Age for Class 9 | Not less than 13 and not more than 15 years as on 31 March of the admission year |
| Residence | All admissions are for boarders; day scholars are not allowed |
| Boys and girls | The admission page describes admissions as exclusively for boys; the latest CET notice is the final word on any change |
| Entrance test | A Common Entrance Test held in December, which is automated and OMR-based |
The schools listed on the official site include those at Chail, Ajmer, Belgaum, Bengaluru and Dholpur. The admission page directs candidates to the latest CET notification for application deadlines, vacancies and reservation categories, and says exam dates are communicated to registered candidates.
It is worth noting what the page does not give: the question count, marks, duration and languages of the test. That information is in the notification for each cycle. If a coaching centre quotes a marks table without showing you the notification it came from, ask to see it.
The CET: how we prepare for an OMR-based test
According to the official page, the CET is held in December and is automated and OMR-based. Because the notification for each cycle carries the scheme, we do not publish a marks table on this page. What we can describe is how we prepare children for the style of test.
| Skill | How we build it |
|---|---|
| Accuracy on an OMR sheet | Regular mock papers on OMR sheets, with practice in marking neatly and checking the question number |
| Speed | Short timed sets that build up to a full paper |
| Mathematics | Concept clarity first, then variety in problems, then speed |
| Language and comprehension | Regular reading, vocabulary in context and short passages with questions |
| General awareness | Regular quizzes and discussion on India, science and current events |
| Reasoning | Series, analogies, classification and pattern questions |
When the notification is out, we adjust the mock series to match its subjects and marking. After the written test, the later stages of the admission process are described in the notice; we help families understand them without making promises about outcomes.
How the RMS batch is organised
The plan is designed for young students, with short classes and varied tasks.
- Mathematics: arithmetic, fractions, ratio, percentages, geometry and word problems for Class 6 aspirants; algebra, mensuration and data handling for Class 9 aspirants
- English and language: reading, grammar, vocabulary and short writing
- General knowledge and science: current events, the armed forces, simple science and geography, learnt through discussion
- Reasoning: short timed sets in patterns and logic
- Mock tests: OMR-style papers in the exam format, with a question-by-question review
- Fitness: regular play and exercise, because a boarding school rewards a healthy routine
Timings, batch dates and duration are confirmed at counselling. A short crash course is available for students who are close to the test.
Fees for RMS coaching
The fee table for the RMS course is shown further down this page, with the batch durations on offer and a one-month crash option. The fee structure page explains registration and other charges. A counsellor can help you choose a duration that fits your child’s school calendar.
Hostel and mess for outstation families
Most RMS aspirants are young, and many attend as day scholars from Dehradun. For families outside the city, the academy has a hostel and a mess. We recommend a visit during counselling first, along with a conversation about the daily routine and the visiting rules. See the hostel and mess page for details and the contact page for directions.
