A two-year plan that starts in Class 11, not in the last six months
The usual NDA story begins in Class 12: a student finishes boards, joins a coaching batch and has a few months before the UPSC paper. The NDA foundation course turns that around. It is meant for students who have just passed Class 10 and want to spend Classes 11 and 12 in one programme where school studies and NDA preparation are planned together, with hostel and mess included.
For parents, the appeal is straightforward. Instead of managing a school in one part of the city, a coaching centre in another and a rented room somewhere between them, the whole day sits in one arrangement. For the student, it means two full years to build the things the NDA actually tests: mathematics at Class 11–12 level, English, general knowledge, fitness and the personality that the Services Selection Board looks at. Families searching for NDA coaching with schooling in Dehradun are usually looking for exactly this, a place that treats the board exams and the defence exam as one project.
This course suits you if:
- you have passed, or are about to pass, Class 10 and have decided you want to join the armed forces as an officer
- you want to take the science stream, because Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics keep every NDA wing open
- you are coming from another state and need a hostel place in Dehradun
- you would rather build fitness and SSB confidence slowly than rush them
The details of schooling, including the board, the stream options and the school timetable, are shared at counselling, and they are confirmed in the admission documents for your year. The defence-preparation side is run by GS India Defence Academy at Street 1, Subharti Road, Nanda Ki Chowki, Lower Kolhupani, Dehradun. All teaching is in person; there are no online classes.
Eligibility: for the foundation course, and for the NDA exam it leads to
Entry to the foundation course is simple: a student who has completed Class 10. The harder question is what the NDA itself will ask of you two years later, and it is worth knowing now, because it affects the stream you pick in Class 11. UPSC sets these conditions in every notification. The table below is based on the NDA and NA (II) 2026 notification issued on 20 May 2026.
| Condition | NDA and NA (II) 2026 notification |
|---|---|
| Candidates | Unmarried male and female candidates who meet the nationality conditions in the notification |
| Age | Born not earlier than 1 January 2008 and not later than 1 January 2011, roughly 16½ to 19½ years |
| Army wing | Class 12 pass of the 10+2 pattern, or an equivalent examination |
| Air Force and Naval wings, and the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy | Class 12 pass with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics |
| Students in Class 12 | Candidates appearing in Class 12 can also apply; those appearing in Class 11 are not eligible |
Two things follow from this. First, a student who starts Class 11 with us can sit the paper in Class 12 itself, provided the birth-date window in that cycle’s notification includes them. Second, choosing Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 11 is the safest decision, since it leaves the Air Force, Navy and Naval Academy entries open as well as the Army wing. The birth-date window moves with every cycle, so we help each family check it against the notification for the exam they are aiming at.

What the NDA exam will ask in two years
It helps to show a Class 10 student what the finish line looks like. The NDA written examination has two objective-type papers, followed by the SSB.
| Stage | Subject | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Written paper I | Mathematics | 300 | 2½ hours |
| Written paper II | General Ability Test (English 200, General Knowledge 400) | 600 | 2½ hours |
| SSB | Intelligence and personality test | 900 | Several days |
Wrong answers in the written papers carry negative marking, with one-third (0.33) of the marks for the question deducted, and calculators are not permitted. The Mathematics paper is set in Hindi and English. The general knowledge half of the General Ability Test covers physics, chemistry, general science, history, geography and current events, which is why general reading has to become a daily habit rather than a revision topic.
Because the foundation student has two years, the curriculum is paced differently from a one-year batch. Class 11 builds the base, and Class 12 turns it into speed and accuracy under test conditions. Our standard NDA coaching page gives the full exam breakdown for students who join later.
The two-year plan, year by year
Class 11: build the base
The first year is about foundations. Students settle into the hostel routine, school classes and physical training, and the NDA side begins with mathematics and English at the pace of the board syllabus. General knowledge starts as a reading habit, with newspapers and short tests. Fitness work in the first year is gentle but regular, building stamina and strength step by step.
SSB preparation also starts in this year, in a light form. Students practise speaking for a minute on a topic, writing short stories from pictures, and working in small groups. None of it is graded harshly at this stage, the point is to normalise it.
Class 12: sharpen and test
In the second year the board exams and the UPSC paper arrive together. Mock tests move to the UPSC format and timing, with a review of every paper. Mathematics shifts from learning topics to choosing which questions to attempt, because negative marking rewards judgement. English and general knowledge are revised against the General Ability Test layout.
Students who clear the written exam move into intensive SSB preparation; those who do not are helped to analyse what went wrong and to plan the next attempt. Nobody is left without a next step. Because a student’s age window may allow several attempts, the plan includes a fallback: you can continue into an NDA or CDS path with the same academy.
A word on balance
The defining risk of a combined course is that one side suffers. We are upfront about this at counselling: a student who is weak at school mathematics will feel it in both the board exam and the NDA paper, and we would rather say so early than hide it. We would rather families asked about progress openly than waited for an annual report card.
Fees: one arrangement for school, hostel and mess
The foundation course is priced as one annual arrangement that covers schooling, hostel and mess, instead of three separate bills. The fee table further down this page shows the current figure, and the fee structure page explains what is included and what is billed separately. Ask the counsellor to walk you through the payment schedule before you decide.
Living away from home at 15 or 16
For most families, the biggest decision is not about the syllabus but about letting a young teenager live away from home. We take that seriously. The academy has separate hostels for boys and girls and a mess, and the foundation course is built around residence, so the daily timetable is built around meals, study, training and rest. Parents are welcome to visit the hostel during counselling, before enrolling; our hostel and mess page describes the arrangements, and the contact page gives directions from the ISBT, the railway station and the airport.
NDA foundation course: common questions
FAQs
Questions parents ask us.
Can't find yours? Ask on WhatsApp; a counsellor usually replies within working hours.
Ask on WhatsAppCan I join the NDA foundation course after Class 10?
Yes, the course is designed for students who have passed Class 10. You enrol for Classes 11 and 12, and your NDA preparation runs alongside school from the first year.
Which stream should I take for NDA?
Science with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics keeps every option open, because the Air Force and Naval wings, and the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Naval Academy, need Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in Class 12. The Army wing asks only for a Class 12 pass. Our counsellors explain the trade-offs for your situation.
Is the schooling part of the fee?
Yes. The foundation course is priced as a single annual arrangement that includes schooling, hostel and mess. The fee table on this page and the fee structure page show the current figure.
Will my child be able to sit the NDA exam in Class 12?
Candidates appearing in Class 12 are allowed to apply, provided their date of birth falls in the window set by the notification of that cycle. We check this with every family at the start.
Are there online classes in this course?
No. The foundation course is a residential, classroom programme in Dehradun. We do not offer online classes.
What happens if my child changes their mind about the forces?
Because the course runs along with Classes 11 and 12, the school qualification is not lost. Students can move to other competitive routes after Class 12, and we are happy to discuss options openly.
