Merchant Navy coaching with a clear view of the career
The merchant navy is the civilian side of the sea: cargo ships, tankers, container vessels and passenger ships that keep trade moving. It is not part of the armed forces, and its entry routes, uniforms and pay structures are different from the Navy. For a student who is drawn to ships and travel, but who is not set on a military career, it can be a very attractive path. The catch is that it is also a field where families can be misled by agents who promise placements, so good information matters as much as good coaching.
Our Merchant Navy coaching in Dehradun is built around two things. The first is preparation for the entrance tests that open the main degree routes, above all the Indian Maritime University’s common entrance test. The second is straight talk about the career, its medical conditions and its costs. Classes are held in person at Street 1, Subharti Road, Nanda Ki Chowki, Lower Kolhupani, and we do not offer online classes.
Students and parents who search for a Merchant Navy institute in Dehradun often want to know three things: which course to take, whether the institute is approved, and what happens after the course. Our answer to each begins with the same advice. Use the official sources, and do not pay any fee until you have verified the approval and the medical conditions yourself.
The course suits:
- Class 12 students with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics who want a degree at sea
- Class 10 and Class 12 students who are still exploring maritime options and want an honest briefing
- repeaters who have written a maritime entrance test once and want a more structured plan
- families from other states who want a hostel place for the student while preparing
For the entrance-test detail, our page on IMU CET coaching covers the university’s conditions and exam. This page takes the broader view.
What to check before you commit to the sea
Eligibility depends on the programme and on the institute, so there is no single rule for the merchant navy. The Indian Maritime University is the best documented route, and its 2026-27 prospectus states several conditions that apply to its Marine Engineering and Nautical Science programmes.
| Point | What the Indian Maritime University states |
|---|---|
| Academic | Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from a recognised board |
| Marks | An average of at least 60% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, and at least 50% in English in Class 10 or Class 12 |
| Age | Maximum age as on 1 August 2026, the start of the academic session: for men, General 25, OBC (NCL) 28 and SC/ST 30 years; for women, General 27, OBC (NCL) 30 and SC/ST 32 years |
| Marital status | Only unmarried candidates are eligible for these programmes |
| Medical | Physical fitness as per the standards and guidelines issued by the Directorate General of Shipping |
| Entrance | The university conducts the IMU CET; the 2026 test was scheduled for 24 May 2026 in two shifts |
The medical condition deserves attention before anything else. Eyesight and colour vision standards for seafarers are strict, and a student who fails the medical after paying fees has lost both money and time. We suggest a check-up with an eye specialist in Class 11 or early in Class 12, and a review of the Directorate General of Shipping’s standards.
Other routes exist, including pre-sea training courses run by institutes approved by the Directorate General of Shipping and some sponsorship programmes run by shipping companies. Their conditions differ, and we do not quote them here, because each institute and company publishes its own. If anyone asks you to pay for a placement, an assured sponsorship or a seat without an entrance process, walk away and speak to the university or the Directorate General of Shipping directly.

The entrance test and how we prepare for it
For the IMU degrees, the entrance is the IMU CET, a multiple-choice test. The undergraduate syllabus published by the university covers Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, English, general knowledge and aptitude at the Plus-two level. The university has used a normalisation procedure to bring scores from different shifts to a common scale, and the current prospectus gives the structure, marks and duration for the cycle.
Our preparation follows that layout.
| Area | How we work on it |
|---|---|
| Physics and Chemistry | Concept classes followed by numerical practice and short chapter tests |
| Mathematics | Core topics practised for speed, with timed sets |
| English | Grammar, vocabulary and comprehension, since English has its own minimum mark requirement |
| General knowledge and aptitude | Regular current-affairs sessions and reasoning practice, including spatial questions |
| Mock tests | Papers in the exam format, with a question-by-question review |
Whatever the route, please read the official notification for the year you are applying. Where an older page or a coaching summary differs from the university’s current document, the university’s document is the one that counts.

How the Merchant Navy batch is organised
The batch combines entrance-test preparation with career orientation. The batch includes the following.
- Science and mathematics classes: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at the Class 12 level, with problem-solving practice
- English and aptitude: reading, grammar, vocabulary and reasoning
- General knowledge: current affairs, geography and a gradual introduction to shipping and trade, including simple maritime terms
- Mock tests: papers in the exam format, with analysis
- Career sessions: discussions on the deck and engine tracks, life on board, contract lengths, documentation and the difference between merchant and naval service
- Fitness: regular exercise, since seafarers need stamina and physical resilience
We encourage students to think about whether they will enjoy long stretches away from home, because a career at sea is rewarding but demanding. Batch timings are shared at counselling.
Fees for Merchant Navy coaching
The fee table for the Merchant Navy course is shown further down this page, with the batch durations on offer, including a one-month crash option. For registration and other charges, see the fee structure page. Please keep the coaching fee separate in your mind from the fees of any degree or pre-sea course, since those are set by the university or institute concerned.
Hostel and mess
Students who live outside Dehradun can stay in the academy’s hostel during the batch. The academy has separate hostels for boys and girls and a mess, and day scholars are equally welcome. The hostel and mess page has more on rooms, meals and monthly charges, and the contact page explains how to reach us from the railway station, the ISBT and the airport.
Merchant Navy coaching: common questions
FAQs
Questions parents ask us.
Can't find yours? Ask on WhatsApp; a counsellor usually replies within working hours.
Ask on WhatsAppIs the merchant navy the same as the Indian Navy?
No. The merchant navy is civilian and works on commercial ships, while the Indian Navy is an armed force. Entry routes, training and service conditions are different.
Which entrance test should I prepare for?
For degrees at the Indian Maritime University, the IMU CET. Other institutes and shipping companies run their own selection, so check their notices.
Is medical fitness important?
Very. The university requires fitness under the Directorate General of Shipping's standards, and eyesight standards are strict. Get a medical opinion before paying any fee.
Can a coaching academy promise me a placement?
No coaching academy can honestly promise a placement. Be careful of anyone who does, and verify claims with the university or the Directorate General of Shipping.
Do you offer online Merchant Navy classes?
No. Our coaching is classroom-based in Dehradun.
Is there a hostel for girls?
Yes, the academy has a separate girls' hostel and a mess. Day scholars from Dehradun can also join the batch.
