What “best NDA coaching in India” really means
Every academy calls itself the best, and a ranking that any institute publishes about itself tells you very little. We would rather not add to that noise. Instead, this page offers two things: a plain way to judge NDA coaching wherever you live, and an honest account of why families from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and beyond look at Dehradun when they want their child to prepare for the National Defence Academy.
Start with what actually decides an NDA selection. The written examination is the same for every candidate in the country: the same two papers, the same marks, the same negative marking. The Services Selection Board is the same too. So the question is never which city has the “NDA syllabus”. The syllabus is public. The question is which environment helps one particular teenager study, train and grow for a year or two, and how much of that environment you can check for yourself before paying a fee.
For many families, the answer includes four things. A classroom batch where the written exam and the SSB are prepared together. A place to live that you can inspect for yourself, with a mess. Fitness training built into the day. And a location where the surroundings themselves speak of the services. GS India Defence Academy, at Street 1, Subharti Road, Nanda Ki Chowki, Lower Kolhupani, Dehradun, is built around those four. We teach in person, and we do not offer online classes.
If you are comparing several academies, our guide on how to choose NDA coaching in Dehradun gives a twelve-point checklist that works for any institute, ours included. The course details are on the main NDA coaching in Dehradun page.
The rules are the same in every city
Wherever you prepare, the eligibility conditions come from UPSC and not from the academy. The table below is drawn from the National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination (II), 2026 notification, issued on 20 May 2026.
| Condition | NDA and NA (II) 2026 notification |
|---|---|
| Candidates | Only unmarried male and female candidates |
| Age | Born not earlier than 1 January 2008 and not later than 1 January 2011 |
| Army wing | Class 12 pass of the 10+2 pattern, or an equivalent examination |
| Air Force and Naval wings, and the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy | Class 12 pass with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics |
| Students in Class 12 | Those appearing in Class 12 can also apply; those appearing in Class 11 cannot |
The notification lists examination centres in the cities students usually come from, including Delhi, Lucknow, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Jammu, Patna, Meerut, Gautam Buddh Nagar (Noida), Ghaziabad and Dehradun. This is an important point for families who are worried about moving a child away. A student can train in Dehradun and still choose a centre near home, subject to UPSC’s first-apply-first-allot rule and the capacity ceiling at each centre.

The exam is identical, so judge the preparation
| Stage | Subject | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Written paper I | Mathematics | 300 | 2½ hours |
| Written paper II | General Ability Test (English 200, General Knowledge 400) | 600 | 2½ hours |
| SSB | Intelligence and personality test | 900 | Stage I, then four days of Stage II |
Both papers are objective type, with a penalty of one-third (0.33) of the marks for each wrong answer, and calculators are not allowed. The general knowledge part of the General Ability Test carries approximate weightages of 25% for Physics, 15% for Chemistry, 10% for General Science, 20% for Social Studies, 20% for Geography and 10% for Current Events. That single fact says a lot about preparation. A coaching plan that treats the GAT as a current-affairs capsule misses most of its marks.
When you compare academies, hold each one to the exam. Ask how many full-length mocks a student writes, whether they match the UPSC layout, what happens to the SSB after the written result, and who exactly will guide your child through the board. The answers will tell you more than any advertisement.
Why families from other states choose Dehradun
We do not claim Dehradun is the only good place to prepare. We can say why it appeals to many families who live far away.
A city built around the services
Dehradun is home to the Indian Military Academy, where the Combined Defence Services Examination notification places the IMA course, and to the Rashtriya Indian Military College at Garhi Cantt. A student here grows up around the idea of service. That is not a reason to enrol, but it is a source of motivation that a teenager notices every day.
An examination centre on the doorstep
Dehradun is one of the UPSC centres for the NDA examination, so students from the hills and plains around can write the paper in the same city where they train.
Study, training and SSB practice in one programme
Study, physical training and SSB practice form the core of the programme, so a student is not piecing together separate tuition, fitness and SSB classes. Ask for the current timetable of the batch at counselling; the hostel and mess are available for those who need them.
Separate hostels and a mess
The academy has separate hostels for boys and girls and a mess. Families outside Dehradun can visit the hostel during counselling, see the arrangement and ask their questions. Our hostel and mess page describes the arrangements.
Getting to Dehradun from your city
Distances are road estimates and timetables change. Travel figures are from Indian Railways timetable data (erail.in) and road-distance estimates, checked in October 2026. Confirm train times on IRCTC/NTES before you travel.
| From | Road distance (approx.) | Fastest direct train in the timetable data |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi | 231 km | Anand Vihar Terminal to Dehradun Vande Bharat, about 4 hours 45 minutes, six days a week; the New Delhi to Dehradun Jan Shatabdi runs daily in about 5 hours 45 minutes |
| Meerut | 192 km | Vande Bharat from Meerut City, about 4 hours |
| Chandigarh | 157 km | Amritsar to Dehradun Express from Chandigarh, about 7 hours 15 minutes, daily |
| Lucknow | 564 km | Lucknow to Dehradun Vande Bharat, about 8 hours 25 minutes, six days a week |
| Patna | 1,065 km | Direct trains take about 21 hours |
Within Dehradun, the railway station is about 10 km from the academy, the ISBT about 8 km and Jolly Grant airport about 33 km. Uttarakhand Transport Corporation buses connect the Dehradun ISBT with Delhi’s Kashmiri Gate on several routes; check the corporation’s timetable before travelling. Students from nearby towns such as Haridwar and Roorkee can reach the city by train in roughly one to two hours. If you live in one of these places, we have pages written for your city, including Delhi, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Patna, Meerut, Haridwar and Roorkee.

What a year at the academy looks like
The programme is the same for every student, wherever they come from. Mathematics and General Ability Test classes, regular mock tests in the exam format, SSB preparation through the year, physical training and, for those who need it, hostel and mess. The detailed description is on the NDA coaching page, and girls can read about their batch and hostel on the NDA coaching for girls page.
We would also suggest you speak to the academy before you travel. A counselling call tells you whether a batch is open, which hostel rooms are free and how the timetable would fit your child’s board exams. For students in Class 10, the NDA foundation course combines schooling with preparation, and for students close to the written paper, the NDA crash course offers a one-month push.
Fees
The fee table for the NDA course is shown further down this page, with the batch durations on offer and the standard hostel and mess charges. We publish fees openly on the fee structure page, because comparing academies is impossible without them. When you compare, add up the whole year: tuition, hostel, mess, registration, travel and study material, and ask each academy what is refundable.
Where your child will stay
Outstation families should look at the hostel with the same care as the classroom. The academy has separate boys’ and girls’ hostels, with a mess. You can visit the hostel during counselling; ask to see the rooms and the dining area. The hostel and mess page covers the details, and the contact page gives directions and the academy’s phone number.
