NDA Coaching for Punjab Students: Direct Train, Centres & Hostel

Punjab has one daily direct train to Dehradun, and it turns the journey into a night’s travel. The 14632 Amritsar-Dehradun Express calls at Jalandhar City, Ludhiana, Chandigarh and Ambala Cantt and reaches Dehradun at 09:45, so a student from Ludhiana boards just after midnight and arrives by mid-morning. That makes GS India Defence Academy, in Dehradun, a realistic residential choice for Punjab families. This page gives the timings by station, the state’s one UPSC centre, Sainik School Kapurthala, and what RIMC does and does not say about Punjab.

What does the Amritsar-Dehradun Express offer Punjab families?

In our timetable data the 14632 runs daily. The first three stations below are in Punjab; Chandigarh and Ambala Cantt are later stops that Punjab families sometimes use. Boarding times are in the evening or small hours, and the arrival at Dehradun is 09:45 from each. The data was read from erail.in on 12 October 2026, so check the current schedule on IRCTC or NTES before booking.

Boarding stationDepartsTime to DehradunRoad to the academy
Amritsar Jn21:3512h 10m401 km, about 5.2 h
Jalandhar City23:0010h 45m319 km, about 4.2 h
Ludhiana Jn00:159h 30m259 km, about 3.5 h
Chandigarh02:307h 15m157 km, about 2.4 h
Ambala Cantt03:206h 25m139 km, about 2.2 h

Pathankot is the exception. Our data shows no direct train from Pathankot Cantt; the Jammu Tawi-Yog Nagari Rishikesh Express leaves at 23:45 on Sundays and reaches Haridwar at 08:30 (8h 45m), and the daily Hemkunt Express leaves at 20:35 and reaches Haridwar at 06:55 (10h 20m). From Haridwar the academy is about 60 km by road. UTC, the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation, lists Dehradun ISBT to Ludhiana via Saharanpur and to Amritsar via Paonta Sahib, and a Dehradun ISBT-Attari service via Saharanpur; the list gives no class or timings, so confirm them at utconline.uk.gov.in.

Questions about getting a younger child to Dehradun and settling into a hostel are common. Call or WhatsApp +91 70170 31757 for free counselling, and the team can talk through the first journey and a visit.

Where do Punjab candidates write the NDA and CDS papers?

UPSC’s NDA and Naval Academy Examination (II), 2026 notice names Ludhiana as the only centre in Punjab, and the CDS (II) 2026 notice does the same. Chandigarh, the Union Territory that serves as capital to both Punjab and Haryana, is also a centre in both notices, and its own Chandigarh page is live. UPSC allots centres first-apply-first-allot up to a ceiling and says it will not change a centre on request, so a Jalandhar or Ludhiana family should apply early.

Punjab townUPSC centre?Nearest centre, straight line
LudhianaYes, in both noticesLudhiana
JalandharNoLudhiana, about 53 km
PathankotNoDharamshala (Himachal Pradesh), about 63 km
AmritsarNoJammu (Jammu and Kashmir), about 121 km

Pathankot and Amritsar families therefore plan an extra hop to write the paper, and straight-line distance understates it. Look at the road to each centre before you choose one in the application.

Is there a Sainik School in Punjab?

Yes. The Sainik Schools Society’s list of existing schools includes Sainik School Kapurthala, whose own website describes it as a school in Punjab. By straight line it is 20 km from Jalandhar, 57 km from Amritsar and 69 km from Ludhiana. Pathankot’s nearest Sainik School on that measure is actually Sainik School Nagrota in Jammu and Kashmir, about 92 km away. Entry to Kapurthala is by the All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination, conducted by NTA, for Class VI or Class IX. The Society also runs a scheme for new Sainik Schools in partnership mode; its New Schools page explains the rules, and our note on partnership-mode schools explains why approval and admission are different things.

Our Sainik School coaching page covers entrance preparation, and the AISSEE admission guide covers the process.

Do Punjab families still collect a RIMC form from the state?

No. RIMC’s admission page says that from the December 2026 examination, for the July 2027 term, the whole application is online through NTA, and forms will not be issued by RIMC or by State Government authorities. The written test is held at NTA centres, and the age window is 12½ to 14 years. On seats, RIMC says only that generally one vacancy per State is allotted, that some States with larger population get up to two, and that numbers may vary every year. It publishes no Punjab figure. RIMC is in Dehradun. See the RIMC admission guide and our RIMC coaching page.

Which Punjab places have a defence link?

XI Corps is headquartered at Jalandhar, and Jalandhar Cantonment, established in 1848, is counted among India’s oldest. Pathankot Air Force Station shares the runway of Pathankot Airport. Families in these cities live alongside the services, which is a useful reference for a child; it is not a link with the academy.

Which of our pages are relevant to Punjab?

Our Punjab pages are Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar and Pathankot. Two live pages already sit on the same train. The Chandigarh page and the Ambala page show the boarding points and the Dehradun arrival. Boys and girls live in separate hostels with a mess; see hostel and mess.
