Dehradun vs Delhi for NDA Coaching: Hostel, Travel and Exam Centres

A fair comparison of NDA coaching in Dehradun and Delhi, with distance, trains, UPSC centres and when each city makes sense.

Neither city is better for every NDA aspirant. Delhi suits a family that lives in the National Capital Region and wants the student at home. Dehradun, 231 km away by road, suits a family that wants a residential routine in a city with the Indian Military Academy, and that is how GS India Defence Academy coaches. Both cities are UPSC examination centres, so the choice is about how your child will live and study for a year, not about where the paper is written.

The selection-board row deserves a word. After the written result, candidates are allotted a Selection Centre through the recruiting website, so the city where you studied does not decide where your SSB is held. Do not pick a city for its board.

How far is Dehradun from Delhi?

Dehradun is about 231 km from Delhi by road, which a free-flowing drive covers in around 3.3 hours. Real journeys take longer because of traffic and the ghat road near the end. By train, the timings below come from Indian Railways timetable data (erail.in) checked in October 2026, and you should confirm them on IRCTC or NTES before booking.

BusUttarakhand Transport Corporation lists several Dehradun ISBT to Delhi Kashmiri Gate routes, including via Roorkee, Saharanpur, Noida Sector 62 and Karnal; check its timetable for class and timings

Within Dehradun, the railway station is about 10 km from the academy, the ISBT about 8 km and Jolly Grant airport about 33 km. A weekend visit from Delhi to see the hostel before you decide is easy to arrange.

Where will my child write the NDA exam?

UPSC lists both Dehradun and Delhi among the centres for the NDA and NA Examination (II) 2026. Centres are allotted on a first-apply-first-allot basis with a ceiling for each centre, and UPSC says it will not entertain a request to change the centre later. So a student who trains in Dehradun can still choose Delhi, or the other way round, but only by applying early. Treat the centre as a logistics decision to make on the day applications open.

When Delhi is the better choice

  • You live in the NCR and want your child at home with family around.
  • Your child needs to keep a school or college schedule in Delhi alongside the preparation.
  • You want to look at many academies in person before choosing, and a hostel is not required.
  • The family cannot arrange for the student to live in another city this year.

These are good reasons, and nothing in the NDA process penalises a student who prepares at home. If this is you, the same ten checks for any defence academy apply in Delhi as anywhere else.

When Dehradun is the better choice

  • You want a residential routine, with classes, meals and rest on a fixed schedule away from home.
  • You live outside the NCR, in a state such as Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan or Himachal Pradesh, where choosing Delhi would still mean finding a place to stay.
  • You prefer a single academy for the written paper and SSB-focused preparation, with separate hostels for boys and girls.
  • You value living in the city that hosts the Indian Military Academy.

To see what that looks like for a Delhi family, read our page for Delhi students, and the one for Noida and Ghaziabad students. For free counselling, call or WhatsApp +91 70170 31757 and ask for a hostel visit.

Three families, three sensible answers

A Class 12 student in Delhi who is comfortable at home, has supportive parents and is happy with an academy a short ride away will probably do well to stay where he is. A move to Dehradun would cost money and disturb a working routine without adding something the student lacks.

A student from a smaller town in Haryana or western Uttar Pradesh is in a different position. If the choice is between renting a room in Delhi and living in a hostel with a mess, the comparison is no longer home against away. It is one rented arrangement against another, and Dehradun is a train ride rather than a long journey.

A girl whose parents want a separate hostel, clear rules and a place they can inspect in a single day will find that the hostel visit settles the question, whichever city it is in. Ask the same questions in both places and let the answers decide.

A quick way to decide before applications open

  1. Write down the three things that matter most to your family, such as home, hostel, fees or girls’ arrangements.
  2. Visit one academy in each city and put the same questions to both.
  3. Ask both for the fee break-up and the weekly timetable in writing.
  4. Settle the exam centre before the application window, because centres fill up in the order applications arrive.

UPSC’s programme of examinations for 2027, issued on 20 May 2026, lists the NDA and NA Examination (I), 2027 notification for 2 December 2026, with 22 December 2026 as the last date and 11 April 2027 as the exam date. UPSC says such dates can change, so confirm them on the exam calendar and on upsc.gov.in.

What about cost?

We have not put rent or living-cost figures on this page, because we could not find a dated, sourced comparison of the two cities and we do not want to guess. Build the comparison yourself. For Dehradun, add the tuition and the hostel and mess charges shown on the fee structure page, and the cost of travel home. For Delhi, add the academy’s fee, your child’s daily travel, and a place to stay if you live outside the city. Ask each academy for the same fee lines in writing.
