The Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC) is in Dehradun, but your child does not have to move to Dehradun to apply to it. RIMC admits children to Class 8 only. The route is an online application through the National Testing Agency (NTA), a written test at a centre in your state, a viva held through your state government, and a medical. So the best RIMC coaching in India, wherever you live, is whichever one prepares your child properly for those three stages and tells you the truth about the odds.
This page sets out the process as RIMC and NTA currently publish it, gives you a list of questions to put to any RIMC coach, and explains where a classroom programme in Dehradun fits and where it does not.
RIMC admission at a glance: the July 2027 term
| Point | What RIMC and NTA publish |
|---|---|
| Entry class | Class 8 only. The child should be studying in Class 7, or have passed it, at the time of admission. |
| Age | 12 years 6 months to 14 years on 1 July 2027. For the December 2026 test the date of birth runs from 2 July 2013 to 1 January 2015, both days included. |
| Application | Online through NTA only. RIMC and state governments no longer issue forms. For this cycle the window ran from 1 to 30 September 2026, with a late-fee window to 7 October and corrections from 9 to 11 October. |
| Stage I, written test | 6 December 2026, pen and paper, 4 hours 30 minutes, 400 marks. |
| Stage II, viva | Fifty marks, tentatively April 2027, held through state governments. |
| Stage III, medical | At a military hospital for those who clear the viva and are in merit. Each stage must be passed separately. |
| Intake | A tentative 25 boys and 10 girls per term. RIMC says one vacancy per state is generally allotted, and some larger states get up to two. |
| Reservation | None. The bulletin calls admission strictly merit-based. |
The age band is the point that trips up most families. Until the December 2026 cycle the band was 11 years 6 months to 13 years, and many older pages still say so. RIMC’s flash notice revised it to 12 years 6 months to 14 years, so check the date of any page before you rely on it. The application window for this cycle has closed. The bulletin says the January term is entered through a test held in June of the previous year and the July term through a December test, and NTA’s calendar up to March 2027 lists only the 6 December 2026 sitting, so dates for the next cycle are still to come.
What the three stages ask of a child
The Stage I paper has three subjects, and the bulletin requires at least 50 per cent in each subject to qualify. There is no negative marking, and the medium is bilingual (English and Hindi) except for the English language questions.
| Subject | Type of paper | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| English | Descriptive | 45 | 125 | 2 hours |
| General Knowledge | Objective, multiple choice | 75 | 75 | 1 hour |
| Mathematics | Descriptive | 30 | 200 | 1 hour 30 minutes |
Look at where the marks sit. English and Mathematics, which are written answers, account for 325 of the 400 marks. A child who knows the content but writes untidily, skips working or cannot compose a letter in good time will lose marks that a multiple-choice test would never take away. The syllabus is aligned with the learning standards of Classes 6 and 7 of CBSE and NCERT, so it is about depth and clean writing, not about racing ahead.
The viva carries 50 marks and tests intelligence, personality and communication, and a candidate needs 50 per cent of its marks. The medical follows the physical standards for the National Defence Academy, though the bulletin says it is not possible to lay down precise height, weight and chest measurements for these young candidates.
Competition is state by state, not all-India
For boys, RIMC prepares a merit list for each state or union territory and fills the seats allotted to it. For girls, there is one all-India merit list, with seats filled zone-wise across five zones. This changes how you judge a coach. An all-India rank has little meaning for a boy applying from a state with a single seat; what matters is how his marks compare within his own state. Ask any coach how many children from your state they see each year, and be wary of anyone who talks only about national results.
Where will my child sit the test, and where do we need to travel?
The bulletin lists written-test centres state by state, generally at the state capital: New Delhi for Delhi, Jaipur for Rajasthan, Lucknow for Uttar Pradesh, Chandigarh for Punjab and Dehradun for Uttarakhand, among others. Allotment is done by computer from the cities a candidate lists. The viva is held at the place or state of domicile, and the medical is done at a military hospital near the candidate’s residence. A family in Lucknow or Jaipur therefore does not need to come to Dehradun for the exam. The first required visit to Dehradun is for admission formalities, after final selection.
That is why searches such as “RIMC coaching in Delhi” or “RIMC coaching near me” are reasonable. Good preparation can happen at home. The case for Dehradun, covered below, is narrower.
Eight questions to ask any RIMC coach
- How much writing practice does my child get each week? Two of three papers are descriptive, so the answer should include timed written English and Mathematics with feedback on handwriting and working.
- Which class is the child being taught with? Children in Class 6 and Class 7 need different pacing from the senior batch.
- Do you know the current age band? A coach who still quotes 11 years 6 months to 13 years has not read the December 2026 notice.
- How does viva practice work? A good viva session lets a child talk about school, family, hobbies and current events in her own words, with no learnt answers.
- What is the state picture? Seats are state-wise for boys and zone-wise for girls, so the coach should talk about your state or zone.
- Can I see how results are counted? Ask what a result means: qualifying the written test, clearing the viva, or admission. These are three different things.
- What is the total cost, with hostel if needed? Get every head in writing, along with refund terms.
- Will you tell me if my child is not ready? An honest no today is better than a hopeful yes that costs a year.
One more point of honesty belongs here. RIMC describes itself as a feeder institution to the National Defence Academy, but its own bulletin says that cadets, after five years and the Class 12 CBSE board examination, still have to qualify the UPSC written examination and the Services Selection Board interview to join the NDA. Joining RIMC does not by itself make a child an officer, and no coach should suggest otherwise.
Where a Dehradun classroom programme fits
RIMC’s campus is at Garhi Cantt, Dehradun, and the city is also home to the Indian Military Academy. Some families like their child to prepare in a city where the armed forces are part of daily life. GS India Defence Academy offers classroom RIMC coaching at Street 1, Subharti Road, Nanda Ki Chowki, Lower Kolhupani, Dehradun 248007. There are no online classes. We have separate boys’ and girls’ hostels with a mess, and for a child of 11 to 13 we would always ask the family to visit first and decide together.
Our honest advice: if your child can attend a good local class and keep up with school, that is usually simpler. A residential stay in Dehradun makes sense when there is no suitable coaching nearby, or when the family wants a few focused months close to the exam. Free counselling is available by phone or WhatsApp on +91 70170 31757, and a counsellor will tell you which of the two suits your child.
