WHAT IS CDS?
The Combined Defence Services Examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commissioned twice a year to recruit candidates for the Officers in the Indian Military Academy, Officers Training Academy, Indian Naval Academy
and Indian Air Force Academy.
Age Limit
Candidates must be between 20 to 24 years old.
Nationality
Must be a citizen of India or a subject of Bhutan or Nepal, or a Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Education Qualification
- For IMA and officers Training Academy, the required educational qualification is Graduation in any discipline from a recognised unversity.
- For Indian Naval Academy, candidates must have a degree in Engineering from a recognised university.
- For Air Force Academy, candidate must have a degree in Engineering from a recognised university. They must have studied Physics and Mathematics in Class 12.
Physical Standard
- Height: The minimum acceptable height is 157.5 cm. There are specific requirements for certain branches and regions, which may vary slightly.
- Weight: Weight should be proportionate to height and age. Generally, candidates should not be underweight or overweight.
- Chest: Minimum chest expansion should be 5 cm.
- Vision: Candidates should have good binocular vision. The minimum acceptable visual acuity is 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other, correctable to 6/6 only for Hypermetropia.
- Physical Fitness: Candidates should be physically fit and able to perform tasks required by the armed forces. For female candidates, the physical standards generally include:
- Height: The minimum acceptable height is 152 cm.
- Weight: Weight should be proportionate to height and age.
- Vision: Similar visual acuity standards as for male candidates.
- Physical Fitness: Similar requirements for being physically fit.

Interview by Service Selection Board (SSB):
Stage I: Screening Test
Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test
Picture Perception & Description Test (PPDT)
Stage II: Psychological Tests, Group Testing Officer Tasks, Personal
Interview, and Conference.
Medical Examination:
Conducted to assess the physical and medical fitness of the candidate.
Merit List:
Based on the marks obtained in the written examination and SSB interview,
a merit list is prepared.
